I just saw a news story the other night, that fits this. A woman had cancer, and received a bunch of very unhelpful responses from friends. She beat the cancer and started making greeting cards to send to friends with cancer. If you don't mind a commercial before the story, here's the link. I particularly liked the "make lemons" card.

I just have a friend who has had a very heartreaking break up. The worst thing I can say is, "You'll get over it."

Here's a funny one where you say, "Oh this is heavy or "this tastes really bad." ect and the person next to you goes, "Pff it can't be that bad." Then you let them lift/taste it and they go "OH MY GOSH THIS IS HEAVY/AWEFUL"
