I normally don't watch these types of movies, but one I did see and the one that stuck with me was City of Angels with Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan. Felt that was a very powerful and sad film.

The way we were...loved it because love didnt prevail. At the end of the day it wasnt enough to overcome their differences but it was still real. At least that was my interpretation. I realize this sounds morbid but I honestly do not see it as morbid.

Second, the notebook. Could never imagine to be loved by another human that deeply.

I have a long list (1) Bright Star - John Keats' love story- very sad.
(2)Penny Serenade - Sad and happy, Cary Grant's speech in the judge's office is beautiful.
(3) Ever After - Love conquers all.
(4) Persuasion - Love survives.

Love Comes Softly is a sweet movie.

Also Phantom of the Opera is very dramatic... the only non-Disney musical I ever watched and liked...

7 Brides for 7 Brothers

A barn raising that ends in fisticuffs, group kidnapping, forced isolation and stockholm syndrome... all set to cheery music. What could be better??

I will have to say Pride and Prejudice. I have recently watched the six part, five and a half hour long BBC production, plus the movie, and then I read the book. Not for the first time on any count :D It was the second time I have read P&P on my computer. Jane Austen's penetrating insight into the human condition is brilliantly and unflinchingly displayed through her characters and plot lines. The depth of error of mistaken first impressions, the social attitudes towards those of different class, the lengths one man will go to right the wrongs he engendered through his false pride, plus the insights of the main character into herself, her family, and her friends, all combine to make this a sweet and endearing story, set two hundred years ago.

Another I would put on this list is Contact. I know many might not see this as a love story, but it is. A man of the cloth falls for an atheistic scientist who is searching for intelligent life in the universe, and both are on a ceaseless quest for the truth, and desire to passionately disseminate it when found.

I like a lot of different movie styles and genres, and while rom com is amusing, and I have certainly seen a great deal of them over the years, not many even come to mind, because they are generally so easily forgotten.
I actually don't very much care for many of them, though I can laugh heartily and be greatly entertained and enjoy them while watching them...

Something like 50 First Dates leaves a lasting impression :)

Groundhog Day was also memorable. I don't care at all for things like Pretty Woman. I really liked Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Shakespeare in Love. Who could forget Doctor Zhivago? I always liked Vertigo, also :)

A favourite of mine in high school was ," Indochine." ( Literally translated Indo - China...in French.I loved it because it had the captivating Catherine DeNeueve in it and stud muffin Vincent Perez.
It was set in the 1930's in what is now known as Vietnam. The plot was based on a love triangle between a wealthy rubber plantation owner ( DeNeuve) her adopted daughter - an Indo Chinese princess and a dashing French navy officer ( Perez.)
It was a haunting story in faraway lands about love kindled and love lost. Also, danger, courage and defeat.Although exquisitely filmed and gorgeous sets ( as only one can expect from French cinema) it had a fair amount of premarital you- know- what as well as unabashed opiod use.
Still, the mystique of this period piece is heightened because of tradegy ; added to that the enchantment of a remote land and a foreign culture makes this film enchanting and highly memorable 20 years on.

Best romantic lines in those movies - "We're gonna need a bigger boat," "I'll be back," "get busy living, or get busy dying." :p
