Their libertarian beliefs preclude compassion in the sense of government redistribution outside of a narrow window (for example, they support taxation for a national defense).

I'm not a member of the tea party for that reason; however, I certainly do partner with them politically on every area of common ground which certainly is most of their agenda.

And tea party candidates have already won national elections for the legislature. If you're talking about president, I don't know.

The Republican Party of the USA, seemingly controlled by the Tea Party, seems to be good at standing on principle, which I respect. However, does the Tea Party demonstrate enough compassion, and can they win a national election (the presidency) if they don’t?

The GOP really needs to take the primary responsibility for the restructuring they did in the early 90's which resulted in the a massive trade deficit and the end of fair trade for the U.S. for this generation, the loss of millions and millions of jobs for U.S. workers, and the reduction in wages and benefits that resulted for many of the remainder.

True, the Democrat party is like Satan's foot stool on earth but the GOP have acted like the character wormwood in the Lord of the Rings.

I would wager that many Republicans if not most are Christian. In what way do you feel that such individuals may lack compassion?

Nevermind. I see this is an old thread.

Amen. Democrats bankrupted this country giving it away to the poor. Republicans are bankrupting this country by giving it all to the rich. I can't say it strongly enough - VOTE THIRD PARTY!!! or you'll get more of the same.

I would wager that a whole lot of Republicans will hear Jesus tell them "and who are you?" (Matthew 7:23)

There's only two roads to avoid the end of the road that we're racing toward. They are fundamentally reform the ideologies of one or both of the two primary existing political parties to actually achieve, in practice, the desired results or abandon them both for one that will.

Presently, I'm a registered independent with third party affiliation in my state. However, if one of the two primary existing political parties chose to completely reform their ideology and platform to what would actually work then I'd join them and go in for the big save.

However, currently there is zero indication that's going to occur.

This so true RickyZ. What makes it even worse is that key figures and a minority position in each of the two parties supported their opposition when they engaged in these behaviors.

But since we're looking at the GOP here, the two books I hand first to ignorant Republicans wondering what went wrong with our economy and labor market are:

Free Trade Doesn't Work: What Should Replace It and Why

and

Cornered: The New Monopoly Capitalism and the Economics of Destruction

I'm not familiar with those books, but I would add one detailing why trickle down economics doesn't work :)

I don't agree with free trade. You can't fairly trade between our free market society and all the slave labor societies. If an SUV costs us $50k to make with a living wage, and China builds one for 20K with slave labor, then every Chinese one that hits our shores should be taxed $30k to level the playing field.

Actually, I think protectionist opinions are more common than they used to be. My argument for a bit of it is, of course, conservative.

The point RickyZ is that we do NOT have free trade and never have. Watch the interview videos I posted and read the books.

THEN, we'll talk.

I don't agree with free trade.

Although I agree with what you say, the fact is that very few can afford that $50,000 suv at todays wages. I know that I cannot.
Over the last 20 to 30 years, Americans have rushed to buy cheap imports in an effort to seem to have MORE.
They are not willing to go back to the ways things were when I was young.
They want a SUV at $50,000 when a $20,000 compact would serve their needs.
And then they want a new one ever few years.
They want a 3000 sq. ft. home when a 1200 sq. ft. would serve their needs.
So to buy the big house and fancy SUV they buy cheap imports that kill American jobs.

Its all about impressing their neighbors and not about need.
Therefore we have WalMart.

It will be interesting to see what automation will do to this. It's easier to manufacture at home with a few technicians fiddling with robots than it is to deal with oversees shipping, foreign factories, etc.

At least until Skynet forms a trade union.
