All it is this: the first verse introduces the fact that God created the heavens and the earth and then verse 2 onwards talks about the creation process in detail. It's a common method used in both non-fiction and fiction. I'm surprised you speculate over nothing of consequence.

Partly I think people don't understand this because they've never read a newspaper.
