If you acknowledge God in everything you do, saying thank you for the mere ability to have the freedom to do as you will, I think God can excuse you the time to enjoy yourself, as long as you take time with him in priority at some point every day.

Is this thread still going on?

Seriously...

It's a bit of a topic that cannot have a correct answer because everyone is so diverse in their own opinions whether they have biblical basis or not and that is a good thing.

My take on it however is. If you're a Christian I honestly don't think God cares what you play as long as in your mind your confertable to deal with some of the content in game and as long as you don't have any convictions about a subject or whatever then your fine.

If you're a gamer and your picking a game and you get feelings that are uneasy about a game. I tend to avoid it, but check on Youtube about the contents first to see if A) a game will run on my computer and B) to check the contents to see if their is anything I'd get offended by.

Hi there

Please define: Hearing the voice of God. I know what it means to me, but I would like to understand your view on this in order to fully comprehend or analyze your statement.

To me it means: Hearing God's voice either audibly or telepathically word for word with Him talking to you. You adhering to what He says...responding, asking questions and obeying.

I was a bit crabby when I last replied. I have more words now. :p

People who play video games aren't ignoring God specifically, they are also ignoring the devil, their thoughts, other people, etc.

They'll be too distracted to give in to bad temptations while gaming, though they're also not gonna contribute to something larger than themselves and make the world better. They are "on hold", neutralized in the mind and spirit.

I sometimes use computer games to get away from my thoughts because my thoughts scare me sometimes, and it almost feels like it would be worse to continue thinking, than to numb everything with the games.

But I agree to an extent that yeah it could get in the way of a spiritual life if the habit becomes extreme. But to simply say "all gamers ignore God" oversimplifies it. It's not always a black and white thing. You haven't met every person who plays them.

Fine me one person that truly and wholeheartedly acknowledges God in everything they do; let alone one who does so when they play video games.

But to simply say "all gamers ignore God" oversimplifies it.
I agree with this.

I don't necessarily agree with this. I have no doubt that the Enemy's hand is in many of today's games.

Anything in life can distract you from God. School distracts you, food distracts you, family drama distracts you, washing your hair distracts you, studying distracts you etc. Pretty much everything can distract you from God and I bet you something else can distract you too. Maybe not gaming in your case but in each of our lives there's some sort of "distraction". We don't sit around reading Bible all day and praying. We do other things too. I mean don't tell me you sit there and read the Bible all day and talk to no one/do nothing except reading the Bible and praying? You cannot put the blame on "gaming" and all of a sudden that's this BIG MEGA HUGE distraction that is going to send you to hell. There are MANY other distractions that are just as "bad". Being on this very forum is a "distraction" as well if you're answering something non-Spiritual. So you do get where I'm going with this. I think I have a great relationship with God but still enjoy playing games, watching movies, listening to music and reading? And guess what, many other people do that too. In fact MOST people do things that are non Spiritual related on a daily basis. God gave us things to enjoy. We should just be wise enough to know when we should take a break and get in touch with God.Things like gaming doesn't mean we "ignore" God. He's always there for us and we can talk whenever we want to. We ignore God then when we eat a ice cream as well I suppose too. Doesn't seem quite right to me.
Thank you for nailing it! Very good reply, full of wisdom. You made more sense than most of the people here.

See King Truth I think what he was saying about video games being a form of evangelism is that you could reach out to people who share those same interest as you do such as playing video games. You could use sports and music as a way of evangelism too. So that's what I believe he means.

Woah. This thread was quite the wakeup call for me.

I'm a 12 year video game addict who to this day can't put down his controller on his own free will. I play video games on my computer and PS3 10 hours on an average day, and if it weren't for the restrictions set in place by my parents, I would be playing video games until I dropped from exhaustion.

As I sit here in front of my gaming system and computer screen, I think back on what drove me to do this. It was my lack of a life and hope for my future. Boredom started it, sadness furthered it, and addiction carried me to where I am today. I'm not a big fan of my life, or what I am, so I keep playing to nullify my spirit, mind, and emotions. It's a great depressant, and seems to have morphed my mind into what it is now... I don't feel many genuine emotions anymore. Apathy has overcome me.

I don't know if I'll be able to drop video games, though... I've invested so much of my life into my consoles... Surely a little bit of gaming here and there can't be damaging. But for me, it would wet my appetite for something more, which I wouldn't be able to resist. What to do...
I'm glad that God somehow preserved at least a little bit of my sanity so I could see this within myself instead of remaining ignorant to it.

Once again, thanks for the thread, and thanks to those who posted in it...
Any tips for how I could heal from 12+ years of constant gaming?

P.S: I'm being completely honest in this post. Yeah, I know. I'm a pretty sad excuse of a person. But I'm no liar.

I was an avid videogamer myself for about 10 years of my life. 8+ hours a day of gaming. Shortly after I quit playing them, I noticed a dramatic change in my thoughts, emotions, ect. Just find a healthy replacement for all the videogames, you don't worry about the healing, God will take care of that as long as you look to him for it :) and you can believe that because I have witnessed this in my own life.

I was not so different from King and Seth. I would sometimes invest 8+ hours into a new game, and since I played RPG's, they demanded a lot of investment in order to progress.

Yet like King, I seldom pick up my controller now. Maybe an hour or two a day; here and there, and I'm satisfied. My mind is focused on other things instead (work, upcoming school, seeking knowledge and wisdom, etc.). It's a tough habit to break, but it seems most people break it at some point, and inadvertently at that. Perhaps as life happens, you figure out where your priorities lie (and more responsibilities arise with age, generally).

I'm glad this thread has helped you, and that you haven't become complacent. Best regards, Seth!

^ He's right. You can still play video games and NOT be addicted. Like, once in a while, I'll play a few games here or there, mostly RPG or action/adventure/fighting. I also just get busy with other things, like school, my internship, my fraternity and friends. As long as you can time manage, there shouldn't be a problem with picking up a game of Call of Duty or GTA once in a while.

video gaming, like pornography, like bread and games in general is political control!
they determine what you up to, what you up to in general what your taste and wishes are.
not to say what you think in your private time..
break out of jewish think tank tactics.
they are only there for them, the parasite..

Aha-, I see what you're getting at now.

I guess it does have a quality to it, like many things, that has the potential to mold someone's mind into something different. Most likely less Godly.

However, methinks that Video Games can just be pure entertainment. Like, LittleBigPlanet. That's about the most innocent and pure game I've played in the while. While, on the other hand, there's games like God of War which sort of put the dude playing the game in the sandals of a very vengeful and angry person... Who slaughters people just to avenge his tragic past.

So, as with most things, I think there's certain video games that are fine to play. But like eating healthy foods to be more physically fit, one must be careful of what video games they play so that they don't open themselves up to the wrong kind of influence.

However, it's better to be safe than sorry. It's always better to avoid something entirely, rather than try to cut out all of the bad parts of it.

I play WoW, but I'm nowhere near what the hard-core raiders are like. I'm not sure at all if they even have a life. Some of them seem downright obsessed. But I figured I can't be that into gaming if I had no problem waiting until Christmas to get a copy of Skyrim, and still have no real desire to play it now or suchlike.

I actually have wondered if it would be possible to make an online Christian RPG, although perhaps it would be better working in an OT context, where you fight the Nephilim, or maybe have Goliath as a final boss after fighting mobs of Philistines.

@Seth... Fall on the Rock. Get broken. Not easy to do, but you'll know when you're broken.

Aside from that, just focus on God.

Imagine this: There's a tank just bigger than your brain, and it's full of water. Now, imagine that water is God's word. Put your brain in the tank. I still have a desire to play video games, and I still do play them, but most of the time I'm usually caught up in things that regard Him. Just focus on God and His love for you. I have listened to a lot of sermons while I have done homework, work at school, etc. As long as you put a large measure of work going into His word, you'll get the same measure coming out of it (and more to boot!). It'll be easier to set that controller down even if the game is addicting.

I use to be able to go play FFVII for three hours straight for a couple of school nights, and play games until I beat them fully for a couple of days. Now, it's hard for me to engage myself in most games (I've got three new RPG's sitting on my desktop and I've only skimmed the top of two of them, and they are not deep at all). That's the power of God's word, Seth.

@systemdown101 I think I may want to play that game... It sounds interesting. That could give the users some sort of feeling as to how David felt when he had to battle Goliath, or just give people an idea of how the people felt in general towards the perils they faced. That has a good amount of potential.

simply playing video games is not a sin, I mean if it's taking up your time with god yeah it's a problem. I'm not addicted to video games mine addiction would be my smartphone. I love my android. But thankfully I have a bible app so I am able to work in my bible reading every day. but god only cares if you read your bible because you want to, not because you feel like you have to.

I'm obsessed with those Metal Gear Solid games. and if you look it up on youtube, theres a whole thing of crazy people posting about how its influenced by the illuminati just like lady gaga, pop culture, anthrax, dinosaurs, burger king, and every other thing under the sun.

dont worry. enjoy your games, and have fun. nothing wrong with a little play. Remember: Indulgence, NOT compulsion!
