I honestly am starting to love 10. Windows 7 used to take at least a minute and a half to get up and running... and almost two minutes to shut down. Win 10 loads in 30 seconds, and shuts down in about 17 seconds. I love that. And, as I have already said, Cortana is a blast!
And it looks and operates just like Windows 7. Same desktop, same everything, with the exception of a couple of features now going by other names.

And all the background spyware.

My buddy (the computer guru) says there's really no reason to ever shut your computer down... ?

I'm not steeped in paranoia. In fact, I like the idea that my computer will search for what I am interested in.

Mine stays on 24-7 unless we have a thunder storm. I put it in sleep mode at night..

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the Android system basically Linux?
It's based on the Linux kernal, but is not a Linux distro or clone.

It's not spyware. I think that would violate... something. I don't know, I'm burnt out, but what I believe you're referring to are actually legitimate back doors that you agree to in the End User License Agreement, which comes with every version of Windows (only what you agree to has become more invasive in 10 than in previous versions).

And you should at least reboot your computer from time to time. Putting it to sleep in lieu of powering it down the majority of the time is fine.

I think this might have come off as a little haughty. Not how I was trying to carry myself! I wasn't really attentive to how the tone came across. Hopefully it isn't inferred that way.

Oh, and I like Windows 10 as far as its interface and layout go, though I do prefer Linux Mint.

Lynx I gotta research about this linux. I keep hearing about it. I am growing increasingly PO'ed with microsoft!
No problem! A child of four could do it. It's even easier to get, install and use than Windows.

You can try it before installing - it runs the full system from the DVD. You can make sure all the hardware works (it almost certainly will) get online and browse, anything you would normally do with a computer, all without even installing Linux on your computer. Most importantly you can decide whether you like it before you install it.

All you need is a download and a blank DVD.

Hmm... I was unaware of these "Get Windows 10" notifications because my Windows computer never gets online. Like... never. It is for music only. It doesn't even have an antivirus. I use Linux for online stuff.

I sometimes wish I could. But I have looked at doing it several times, and the people suggesting it stop WAY short of giving good instructions on how to implement it. And I don't feel like going back to school to try and learn all the hundreds of little things they assume I already know.

It's like teaching someone to drive by telling them to "Put it in gear, and just go".... forgetting that they first have to be told they need the key, then where the key goes, that it needs to be turned and held till the engine starts.... then released, how to adjust your seat and mirrors, what "Put it in gear" actually means, and what in the world you do to "just go." LOL

There are step-by-step instructions many places online. I can PM you my phone number if you want me to walk you through it. It's astonishingly easy.

Astonishingly easy for someone who ALREADY knows how to do it, and is pretty good with computers. The rest of us aren't so smart..lol

I extend the same offer to you. All you need is a blank DVD. Let me know if you want to give it a try.

It may be working fine, it may look nice, but if you want to have some privacy, do not use anything from Microsoft.
