I've been reading "Charity & It's Fruits" by Jonathan Edwards. In the book, Edwards stesses that the verses in Corinthians, do not speak of romantic love, but of a love that doesn't have an English translation; the closest word being charity. It got me thinking: is it wrong that so many wedding ceremonies use these verses, considering many misconstrue the verses as dealing with romantic love? (Don't get me wrong, I know it takes a charitable attitude to make a marriage work). It makes me sad to think that people are missing out on understanding Paul's writings.

Take a second look. Read the verses and substitute the word love for charity (or doing good for others) and it becomes a completely different verse. Considering Paul promoted abstinence, I always found it a bit odd that he would gush about romantic love in an epistle.

meh i dont know if it has to do with charity but rather a way to live a love filled lifestyle. And I also dont believe it falls only into Romantic love but who one should love in general. Francis Chan said a good way to read it is to substitute youre name for the word love, and if the statement isnt true then you have work to do.

Love is love. To love someone even though they may be a rotten person. The love of God is in each and everyone of us. Its a matter of if we act on it or not.

It is not about romantic love but is the love that we have to show towards all people to be right with God.

God said not to love in word only but love in deed and in truth.

God said if you say you to someone I love you and have this world's goods and do not help that person out if they have a need the love of God does not dwell in you.

Charity is love in action which can be the only love for we love in deed and in truth.

The Bible says love works no ill towards their neighbor;therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

Paul said we do not void out the law but we establish it.

Everybody has to fulfill the law which love is the fulfilling of the law which we can do by the Holy Spirit.

The world is motivated by selfishness and arrogance which is not love.God's kingdom is love.

Love is not selfish and arrogant and love does not think an evil thought.

When we come to God what we are learning is how to love so we can love God and people perfect to belong to a kingdom that is perfect in love which we can do by the Spirit.

The Bible says that Charity is the greatest of the 3 Faith,Hope, and Charity.

That is because Faith and Hope are only needed in this world. You do not need Faith and Hope when you are in heaven because you are there.

Charity will go on forever and in heaven love will continue forever.

Charity is the greatest of the 3 for Faith and Hope are only needed in this world but Charity will go on forever.

In 1 Corinthians 13 it is not talking about romantic love but the love that we have to have towards people which is not selfish and arrogant and we love in word and truth which is Charity, love in action.

Howdy Laurajean, I really don't think it is wrong to use this chapter in a marriage cermony. For we read:

John 15:13
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down His life for His friend.
These words Jesus spoke unto His disciples, and this is the Unconditional (Agape) love that Jesus gave us all by laying down His life for us. This is the same kind of love that Paul wrote of in I Corinthians 13.

Paul later wrote:
Ephesians 5:25
Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ loved the church, and gave Himself for it;"
I believe this is telling us in a Christian marriage we need to have romantic love, but even more importantly Agape/Unconditional Love
