Yes That is biblical.
And it does not mean that believers who do not speak in tongues dont have the Holy Spirit...as referred to in Acts 2:4.....and began to speak with other tongues as the Holy Spirit gave them utterance.

Those believers who do not yet speak in tongues have not been given this 'utterance' yet, that is all.
Later on in Ephesus...Paul had to lay his hand on a 'baptised by John' believers shoulder and say the words I baptise you with the Holy Spirit, before the believer could speak in tongues.

And elsewhere, and in one of your bible quotes above. (Mark 16:17&18) these signs shall follow....the key word here is 'signs' being plural, and from a multiple list....it may be that some have the ability to cast out demons, and not be poisoned and not die from a snake bite, but have not yet been given the 'utterance ' from this list.

There is nothing to say that a believer (who is definitely saved), and has the indwelling Holy Spirit) must display ALL of these signs. Be pretty perfect to be able to have them all ...and all at once...however, it is up to the Holy Spirit to give this, and when He does we should just receive these blessings, and with joy...because they ARE signs...all of them.
One day we will all be perfect like our Saviour Jesus Christ.

And I suppose from all of that, if we meet a brother or sister in Christ who can't yet speak in tongues, then we could use Pauls example and put our hand on their shoulder and pray for them to receive ALL the gifts of the Holy Spirit...but they dont have to! Same with the casting out demons etc...pray and pass on ALL the gifts you currently display...Lets not just pick on this one gift ay.

It is truly awesome to speak to God directly from your heart, bypassing the brain...it is something to get excited about...not a gift to shun.
It is truly awesome to cast out demons too.....

i pray in Jesus name, that everyone on this site will have no fear, and fully receive the gift of tongues and the gift of casting out demons...from their indwelling Holy Spirit - at least ask for it Father, and that you will deliver the gift of this utterance, and the gift of casting out demons, from Your Holy Spirit. Receive Receive Receive. Amen :)

Thankyou Father for all Your gifts, and thankyou that we can be fully equipped to walk as Jesus walked, with the love of God, and brotherly kindness in our hearts.
:)

Excellent post Standing, thank you! I was like those believers who were baptized by John and never even heard of the baptism of HolySpirit. I was saved and already had the HolySpirit Who I was sealed with until the day of redemption., But I didn't know about the baptism of the HolySpirit and when I did hear about speaking in tongues I shunned it as satanic. Stayed away from all believers who did it considering them to be wackos. With that mind set I did not speak in tongues nor did I believe in the gifts for today.

Those believers who do not yet speak in tongues have not been given this 'utterance' yet, that is all.

I'm still learning about this marvelous gift that I used to shun. Now I look at God's Word as new each day and allow the HolySpirit to interpret it for me and not usurp His authority with my own pre concieved
pre taught version of what the Bible says. Since learning about how we believers are no longer under the old covenant of the law., I'm finding out many truths about what it means to be a new covenant believer under grace.

Forinstance about health and healing. 3 John 2 "Beloved I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers." I used to shun the message of healing because of the pain and suffering in the world. But now I see that like with the gift of tongues, God will not force us to believe. And I'm to look to Jesus and the promises in the Bible and not the world for my answers. The Bible teaches about healing but I shunned that too and never experienced it.

There are many things the Lord has provided for us in the Atonement but if we don't believe it, we won't experience what He already has for us. Faith releases us to recieve what He already paid for. I'm still learning about this and it is an amazing journey of faith.

You have to get born again, and read your Bible or you will never see it. Many many references to tongues in the NT as a gift of the Spirit.

so tell me about the demons you've cast out .. ? are you just as fervent that all must cast out demons?

you need to read your Bible too:

Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?
(1 Corinthians 12:29-30)

we don't get to just pull a few verses out and ignore the rest of them.
we don't all have the same calling or the same gifts.

how many times can this be explained???
I didn't say it, Jesus said it. How many times will you deny what He said and still try to take the spiritual high ground?

And yes, I have cast out demons and will continue to do so as the Lord presents that requirement.

If you read my posts properly you will see I have said clearly that speaking in tongues is ONE example of evidence (or a sign) of the Holy Spirit, but not the only one. I didn't say everyone has to speak in tongues, but I did say that if you don't want to speak in tongues God will not compel you.

I didn't say that if you don't speak in tongues you are not saved, what I DID say, and supported it biblically, is that if you have not the Spirit of Christ you are none of His. Except a man is born again he shall not see the kingdom of God. If you are not born again you will not have the Holy Spirit.

For your own comfort and peace of mind you need evidence of the Spirit. We all need some evidence that we can't put down to positive thinking or imagination...because the devil will surely use that to bomb you off track as soon as some trouble arises in your life that makes things uncomfortable.

If you have evidence of the Holy Spirit and things become uncomfortable personally, you will nevertheless know that ALL things work together for GOOD to them that love God, to them that are called according to His purpose. The Holy Spirit is the Comforter. Why grieve Him any longer?

For the life of me I can't see why anyone would reject something as wonderful as tongues that is spoken of in the scriptures and freely offered by God.

Here is some good commentary on this subject. I also thought if I just gave up my will to it I would automatically speak in tongues. But that is not how it works. Read this Bible commentary for a pretty good explanation.

And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.Note 5 at Ac 2:4: It is not completely clear who was included in this "they." In Ac 1, Luke spoke of 120 men and women being present in the Upper Room, but it cannot be said for sure that all of those were present when the Holy Spirit came. It can be safely assumed that the eleven apostles who were waiting, as Jesus had commanded them (Ac 1:4-5), spoke in tongues. It is also very possible that others or all of the believers who were present in the Upper Room spoke in tongues.
Either way, in Peter's sermon to the people, he quoted Joe 2:28-29, and he interpreted this outpouring of the Holy Ghost "upon the servants and upon the handmaids" as being for all the people who were present (over 3,000, Ac 2:41) and for their "children, and to all that are afar off" (that's us, Ac 2:39). This forever proves that this gift of tongues was not just for a very few apostles.Note 6 at Ac 2:4: This filling of the Holy Ghost was subsequent to the born-again experience ). Paul later revealed in Ro 10:9 that people had to confess with their mouths that Jesus is Lord and believe in their hearts that Jesus was raised from the dead before they could be saved.
These disciples had already done this. Joh 20:28 specifically records Thomas kneeling before the resurrected Jesus and confessing that Jesus was both Lord and God. No doubt all of these disciples had already been saved, yet they had not received the baptism of the Holy Ghost. This same thing was true of the people who believed on Jesus in Ac 8:12-17 and 19:2-7.Therefore, it is possible to be saved yet not have the baptism of the Holy Spirit that Jesus spoke of (Joh 7:37-39 and Ac 1:4-5). Since the Holy Spirit has been given and we do not have to tarry for His coming, we can receive salvation and the baptism of the Holy Spirit at the same time, but it is not automatic. We must ask and believe (Mt 7:7 and Lu 11:13) for the baptism of the Holy Ghost, just as we believed for salvation.Note 7 at Ac 2:4: Speaking in tongues is unique to the church age. This is because when we believers speak in tongues, our new, born-again ) spirits are speaking (1Co 14:14), not our minds. Before salvation, our spirits were the part of us that was "dead in trespasses and sins" (Eph 2:1). Therefore, until we received new spirits (2Co 5:17), the Holy Ghost could not give us this supernatural communication with the Father. However, this experience was prophesied in the Old Testament. Joel prophesied about it in Joe 2:28-29. Peter referred to this passage in his explanation of this miracle. Isaiah spoke very specifically of speaking in tongues in Isa 28:11-12, and Jesus also said believers would speak with new tongues (Mr 16:17).Note 8 at Ac 2:4: The other tongues that these disciples spoke in were languages other than their own; they hadn't learned them before. These tongues were different than the tongues that Paul was giving instructions about in 1Co 12-14, in that these were known languages. Two kinds of speaking in tongues are very clearly spoken of in 1Co 13:1. They are called "the tongues of men and of angels." The tongues of men are the known languages, like the disciples spoke in here. The tongues of angels, or heavenly languages, are the tongues that all Spirit-filled believers can speak in. This is what Paul was speaking about in 1Co 12-14.This is the only example of believers speaking in known languages that is recorded in the Bible. The other instances of speaking in tongues (Ac 8:18 [implied], 10:45-46, and 19:6) were evidently the heavenly languages unknown to men.Note 9 at Ac 2:4: This speaking in tongues was not as many have envisioned it. The Holy Spirit did not take possession of the disciples to the point that they had no control over what was happening.Paul made a special point of this in his letter to the Corinthians about how the gifts should be properly administered. He told the Corinthians to control themselves and not speak in tongues in church unless there was an accompanying interpretation (1Co 14:27-28). He would not have told them this if they had no control over the gift. The gift of speaking in tongues is no different than the ministry gifts listed in Eph 4:11. True ministers of God also operate in a supernatural gift when they preach or teach. Peter was being used of the Holy Spirit just as much when he preached to this crowd as when he spoke to them in tongues. Yet no one expected him to simply open his mouth and have God supernaturally control it.The Holy Spirit inspires and anoints preachers, but the ministers' wills are still intact; the degree to which the Holy Spirit uses the message is largely dependent on how much the individuals yield to His control. This is how it is with speaking in tongues. The Holy Spirit gives people the utterance, but they must exercise their faith to speak (Mr 16:17) and believe that the result is inspired by God (Lu 11:9-13).Failure to understand this one truth has caused many people to ask the Lord for the gift of tongues and then wait for the Lord to supernaturally move their mouths. If nothing happens, they say that the Lord must not want them to speak in tongues or else it would have happened. That is no more true than to say that every person the Lord has called to preach is preaching or every person He has given a prophecy to has prophesied. We have to step out in faith.

For your own comfort and peace of mind you need evidence of the Spirit.
nah. i don't. i just trust Him at His word.

but He shows me anyway! :)

for record: i have spoken in tongues. years after believing. years after being assured. i don't talk about it because it's immaterial. it's not proof. it's not necessary. it's not for others. i shouldn't boast of anything but that i've known His mercy.
i don't reject it. what i reject is that it's necessary, it's absolute evidence, or that it ought to be emphasized to the degree it is.
well i reject some other things too haha -- but that sums.

if you don't say everyone has to speak in tongues, yay! we agree. but some people say that - and when we say "NO THEY DON'T" it doesn't mean we're "rejecting" this.

we are on same page?

You know, I attended charismatic churches for 15 years and never grew as a Christian, never learned much of anything. Because speaking in tongues is such an incredibly small part of the Bible, but that was the whole emphasis in those churches.

When I started in non-tongue speaking churches, that is when I started to learn what the Bible said, and my life changed radically. I began to have a hunger to know more about God, the Bible and how to live as a Christian. Then I went to Seminary, and really began to understand God's calling on my life.

You obsess over a few obscure passages that you interpret wrongly. You make huge doctrines about something which is so minor as to be unimportant. Spend some time reading the Bible from cover to cover a few times, and see all the important things you have missed, ok?
My brother and his wife had at one time attended an Assemblies of God church that over emphasized the gift of tongues to the point where those who did speak in tongues looked down on those who did not speak in tongues and those who did speak in tongues saw themselves spiritually superior to those who did not speak in tongues. They finally had enough and left!

I don't know why you would have trouble with "evidence of the Spirit", and I meant "one needs" as much as "you need" or "I need".

I do feel Paul had the right angle...1 Cor 14:18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all: 19Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

So he is saying here he is grateful that he speaks in tongues both the unknown kind (1 Cor 14:2) such as we are discussing, through which we are speaking mysteries unto God, AND those in the congregation with understanding and/or interpretation. He does both because they are both good, but also because the love of God compels him, he knows that it is not all about him, but about the ministry God has towards His flock....so he prefers to speak a tongue which teaches the hearers in the church.Yet we are not orphans and we do not stop being children of God when we are not in the church. So we have that comfort of the other kind of tongue gift when we are alone in the prayer closet.

I don't know if we are on the same page. I am worrying about what you said, that you feel you have no need of evidence of the Holy Spirit. That might be because you have already received the evidence of tongues as you said, but to say that on a public forum could lead others to believe they don't need any evidence, and shouldn't bother to desire it.

Back to an earlier point, as the scripture says, Romans 8:9
But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

To me, if a person has no evidence of the Holy Spirit, and no desire for any evidence, there is a hefty chance they are "none of His".

After reading through all the posts here, the Holy Spirit in me was disturbed at the number of believers who flatly refuse and ridicule this awesome gift from God.
Only speaking for myself . . . I do not flatly refuse any gift from God that some folks are blessed to receive; if anything, I rejoice for everyone regarding their gifts.

What makes me as passionate as Jesus turning over the tables in the temple is when Pharisees look down their egotistical noses and proclaim that lacking certain gifts means they are not saved.

Its that kind of crap that forces non-believers and people weak in the faith to walk away from a relationship with Jesus. And remember what He says:

If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons.

But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.

But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills. (1 Cor 12:4-11)

Now you are Christ’s body, and individually members of it. And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, various kinds of tongues. All are not apostles, are they? All are not prophets, are they? All are not teachers, are they? All are not workers of miracles, are they? All do not have gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? All do not interpret, do they? But earnestly desire the greater gifts.
And I show you a still more excellent way.(1 Cor 12:27-31)

idk... seems pretty clear :)
Ya'll better start listening to Momma! :)

A couple of questions. First, how is it, exactly, that you know God won't compel one to speak in tongues? He kept after Jonah 'til Jonah complied. Are you saying that when God wants something from you and doesn't get it He doesn't try more than once? Of course, you can show scripture to support that, can't you. You wouldn't say something about God that the bible doesn't say, would you?
So go ahead, be a dear, and give chapter and verse for that supposition. I'm going to admit that my memory isn't the best, but I've read my bible front to back 4 times and many more than that just piece-meal. I'm sure I must have just forgot that passage.
Another thing, do you only speak tongues in your church, or do you speak it in others also? How many interpreters are there in your church? Are they all men, or are some of them women? If you speak tongues elsewhere, do those interpreters follow you to those locations? Or is there some kind of network where you tongues folks know of the interpreters names and request them to be there when you want to speak?
Because I know you wouldn't do something the bible forbids, and Paul clearly said don't speak in tongues without an interpreter, and that means everyone knows who the interpreter is beforehand, now doesn't it?

So help me out here and clear up some of these puzzling things for me, will you?

Here is some good Bible commentary on the subject. btw.,God also told the Israelites to go around the walls of Jericho shouting and somehow...the walls came-a tumbling down....makes no sense to us how that can happen., but if God says to do it.,we put aside our own ideas of what is "normal" and do it.

My God understands English. He also understand all REAL languages.
If you use foolish jibberish to speak to God, He will not here you. You are wasting your time and making a fool of your self.
I as amased at the ignorance of the Word of some people.
So what are you going to do with this verse?
1 Cor 14:2
For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

It is not our ignorance of the Word, but yours.

And to go one step further by calling a gift of the Spirit foolish jibberish is very unwise, and likely to lead you into blasphemy.

Not to mention calling the children of God fools:

Matt 5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

And that goes for you phil, utah, gr8grace and anyone else who agrees with it.

When you get rid of your sarcasm and ask a question because you genuinely want an answer, I may respond.

God bless you all :)

The gift of tongues is from God - our new heavenly language.
Some want and receive it, some dont.

And it is awesome if you do, coz then you can pray in the Spirit, and know exactly what that piece of Scripture means "praying in the Spirit."

We always pray in the Spirit, as we are moved...at the supermarket or sitting on the toilet. It makes no difference to God. He just loves that we are praying in the Spirit. I sing in the Spirit too as I am overcome with the joy of the Lord. Awesome.

Heavenly Father, I ask in Jesus name, that You will lay your hand upon everyone who reads this.
That You will impart this gift into the hearts of all the scoffers and mockers here Father, so that they will truly understand its meaning...and lose all fear of this awesome gift, and that Your glory be revealed awhen they know it came from You.
Amen
Thankyou Father, Thankyou :)
