Is hell a place for the damned or bad people?

bad people

Psalms 9:17
The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.

Psalms 55:15
Let death seize upon them, and let them go down quick into hell: for wickedness is in their dwellings, and among them.

Proverbs 5:5
For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil: But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a twoedged sword. Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell.

Proverbs 7:27
Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death.

2 Pet. 2:4
For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;

good people

Psalms 16:10
For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

Jonah 2:1, 2
Then Jonah prayed unto the Lord his God out of the fish's belly, And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the Lord, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice.

Acts 2:24-27, 30-32
Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it. For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved: Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope: Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne; He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.

So if both good and bad people go to there, what is hell?

Original Language :
Hebrew (Old testament) - Sheol
Greek {New testament) - Hades
In some cases some translators have rendered the Aramaic word Gehenna as hell fire.

When translated :
The KJV (King James Version), as well as a many others, inconsistently translates these words as hell, pit, and grave.
Others consistently retain them in their original form (Sheol and Hades).

Scriptural examples of translation differences:

Psalms 9:17
Acts 2:31

KJV
17 The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.
31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.

ASV
17 The wicked shall be turned back unto Sheol, Even all the nations that forget God.
31 he foreseeing this spake of the resurrection of the Christ, that neither was he left unto Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption.

JUB
17 The wicked shall be put into Sheol, all the Gentiles that forget God.
31 he, seeing this before, spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that his soul was not left in Hades, neither did his flesh see corruption.

CEV
17 The wicked will go down to the world of the dead to be with those nations that forgot about you.
31 David knew this would happen, and so he told us that Christ would be raised to life. He said that God would not leave him in the grave or let his body decay.

ERV
17 The wicked will go to the place of death, as will all the nations that forget God.
31 David knew this before it happened. That is why he said this about that future king: 'He was not left in the place of death. His body did not rot in the grave.' David was talking about the Messiah rising from death.

ESV
17 The wicked shall return to Sheol, all the nations that forget God.
31 he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption.

GW
17 Wicked people, all the nations who forget God, will return to the grave.
31 David knew that the Messiah would come back to life, and he spoke about that before it ever happened. He said that the Messiah wouldn't be left in the grave and that his body wouldn't decay.

GNV
17 Death is the destiny of all the wicked, of all those who reject God.
31 David saw what God was going to do in the future, and so he spoke about the resurrection of the Messiah when he said, 'He was not abandoned in the world of the dead; his body did not rot in the grave.'

Scriptures that link Sheol and Hades with death:

Proverbs 9:18
But he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell.

Is. 14:9
Hell from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming: it stirreth up the dead for thee, even all the chief ones of the earth; it hath raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations.

Is. 28:15
Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:

Is. 28:18
And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand;
when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.

Ez. 13:16, 17
I made the nations to shake at the sound of his fall, when I cast him down to hell with them that descend into the pit: and all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, shall be comforted in the nether parts of the earth. They also went down into hell with him unto them that be slain with the sword; and they that were his arm, that dwelt under his shadow in the midst of the heathen.

Ez. 32:18-23, 26, 27
Son of man, wail for the multitude of Egypt, and cast them down, even her, and the daughters of the famous nations, unto the nether parts of the earth, with them that go down into the pit. Whom dost thou pass in beauty? go down, and be thou laid with the uncircumcised. They shall fall in the midst of them that are slain by the sword: she is delivered to the sword: draw her and all her multitudes. The strong among the mighty shall speak to him out of the midst of hell with them that help him: they are gone down, they lie uncircumcised, slain by the sword. Asshur is there and all her company: his graves are about him: all of them slain, fallen by the sword: Whose graves are set in the sides of the pit, and her company is round about her grave: all of them slain, fallen by the sword, which caused terror in the land of the living.
There is Meshech, Tubal, and all her multitude: her graves are round about him: all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword, though they caused their terror in the land of the living. And they shall not lie with the mighty that are fallen of the uncircumcised, which are gone down to hell with their weapons of war: and they have laid their swords under their heads, but their iniquities shall be upon their bones, though they were the terror of the mighty in the land of the living.

Rev. 6:8
And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth

Scriptures where Gehenna (the Valley of Hinnom), is rendered hell, or hell fire:

Matt. 5:22
But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

Matt. 5:29
And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

Matt. 10:28
And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

James 3:6
And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

Is hell eternal (everlasting)?

Rev. 1:18
I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.

Rev. 20:13, 14
And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

Where did hell come from?

Rom 5:12
Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

1Co 15:53
For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.
But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Rev_6:8
And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.

death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them
death and hell were cast into the lake of fire

Jeremiah 7:31 And they have built the high places of Tophet, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my heart.

Job 34:10 Therefore hearken unto me, ye men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness; and from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity.

Who would want to paint such a cruel picture of our wonderful, loving, compassionate, and merciful Heavenly Father, if it isn't Satan himself. What a wicked creature.
And how he has deceived some into believing his wicked lies, so that they share in promoting it.

Now that we know, we will no longer follow him in smearing our loving Father.
Satan! Be gone!

What a relief!

So here our Father invites us...:)

James 4:8 Come near to God, and he will come near to you. Clean up your lives, you sinners. Purify your hearts, you people who can't make up your mind.

Isaiah 41:10 Don't worry - I am with you. Don't be afraid - I am your God. I will make you strong. I will help you. I will support you with my right hand that brings victory.

Good people don't avoid hell...only perfect people do.
Jesus is our Substitute...He suffered what we need not suffer.

I don't understand. Please explain.
Good people are just as much in need of Jesus as bad people. All fall short of God's glory, none can keep His perfect standard of righteousness. Therefore, God sent Jesus Christ, the Son of God, to be the propitiation for the sins of the world. He paid our sin penalty, which is death. He is our Savior. :D

Question though... since I am still a bit confused.
Why did Jesus go to hell, although a perfect man?

Thanks very much. I agree, and really appreciate you sharing that scripture.
It really verifies the point that we need not fear that the dead are suffering, and just as God brought Jesus out of the tomb, restoring him to life, he will do the same for all those in the tombs today - emptying them, and restoring them to life.
That's so reassuring, you know?

when you say good, I think on how God created the heavens and earth etc.. Always saying and it is good not perfect but good.
There is no one on earth today that is perfect to say so is a bucket full of pride..... As far as how Jesus sees people indeed he sees them as perfect just the way they are.

Yes, it does teach us lessons.

I believe Lazarus and the rich man were real people that Jesus knew.

This is a true story.

It's not a parable, it's a real place.
I don't have the scriptures off-hand.
When I get a bit settled, I can show you them.

There is a thread going on right now, that asked a question about Jesus being the first-fruits from the dead.

Here is what it comes down to.
If Abraham or anyone else was in heaven before Jesus died and was raised to heaven, then everything Jesus said was a lie.
Jesus was the first to be raised to heavenly life.
He even said that no man had ascended to heaven, but the son of man.
So since Jesus always speak the truth - Luke 16:19-31 is a parable.
The big curtain that tore in half when he died allows entry into heaven.
There is scripture for that too.

Right on. And, these are but a small part of the many reasons that was a parable.

Anything that God creates, is perfect - creates, not makes.

When God created everything in the beginning, everything was perfect - that is, everything was the way God wanted it.

When Adam sinned, he passed imperfection to his offspring, so that they were not born, in the way God wanted them to be.
Jesus was and is perfect. Unlike Adam, he never sinned.
He however, took on mortal flesh to give his life in behalf of Adam's fallen seed - not for Adam.

Because of what Adam did, his offspring were not of God, not perfect. -
Col 1:
20 And God was pleased for him to make peace by sacrificing his blood on the cross, so that all beings in heaven and on earth would be brought back to God.

21 You used to be far from God. Your thoughts made you his enemies, and you did evil things.
22 But his Son became a human and died. So God made peace with you, and now he lets you stand in his presence as people who are holy and faultless and innocent.
23 But you must stay deeply rooted and firm in your faith. You must not give up the hope you received when you heard the good news. It was preached to everyone on earth, and I myself have become a servant of this message.

Perfection is no found in sinful flesh, but God draws near to those who draw near to him, (1 Pet. 5:7) and he declares them righteous, as he did Abraham, whom he called his friend. Galatians 3:7-9

indeed his creations are perfectly imperfect like the four leaf clover in the midst of a batch of three or oak trees that never look the same or our wobbling planet for a purpose and this as well is how Yoshua sees us too..
