Psalm 119 was written for love of God

not love of law

I like your response here and I agree
Have you read it lately? I am sure the author loves God, but every single verse is about God's instructions.

Jesus is the fulfillment of the law. When you read "law" insert "Jesus" into it and the Old Covenant comes alive to you. Jesus and His finished work on the cross and resurrection is the complete fulfillment of the law.

For example: Psalm 119:97

Psalm 119:97 (NASB)

O how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day.

We would say "Father, how I love your Son my Lord Jesus Christ. He is my meditation all the day."

Paul put it this way in the New Covenant.

Colossians 3:16 (NASB)
[SUP]16 [/SUP] Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

I like this because the law on stone was just that, writing on stone. But Jesus is the law lived out in person. Christ in our hearts by faith is the only way that the law is written on our hearts.

David had this although he did not know Jesus as a Human. But He did know Jesus by faith.

Similar to Psalm 119 is Psalm 19 but few verses regarding the perfect law that converts the soul. It speaks about the Scriptures as the law of the LORD, they are more to be desired more than gold and are sweeter than honey and the honeycomb! Amen!

Psalms 19:7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.
Psalms 19:8 The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.
Psalms 19:9 The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.
Psalms 19:10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

most of us probably know that one in song

it is beautiful, both the words of the Psalm and the music

and yes, they do stir our hearts

I love that verse in Colossians (spell check tried to change it to Columbians) and have taught and demonstrated on it

God is so good! We get to encourage each other with music which most of us find so enjoyable

Let the word of Christ not just be in you, but get yourself soaked in it so that your heart finds the music in it and encourage each other and that done with wisdom and more

and people think the Bible is boring...well, the Holy Spirit gives life as you know :)

last night, I had this insight
one way to use this psalm is as a tutorial on psalm-making

start with
15 I will meditate on your precepts, and consider your ways.

16 I will delight myself in your statutes. I will not forget your word.

rearrange it this way

I will meditate on your precepts, I will not forget your word.

I will delight myself in your statutes and consider your ways.

has the basic meaning changed?

using that pattern, some improvisation

I rejoiced when I woke up this morning, because I remembered there's God's way and the world's way.

how I love your way of doing things, God. The day goes so much better when I stick to your directions.
I 'see' what you are saying

I am firm believer in applying what we learn about and from God. I miss the mark often enough but whereas I used to get in a funk about it, I now just kind of kick myself, ask forgiveness, because it is always available, and go on

so many words that we entangle ourselves in. no wonder God says let your yes be yes and let your no be no. funny thing, I don't make promises and I have never liked doing that. I think a part of that might be because I had so many broken to me when I was growing up. it hurts and disappoints.

this,

I rejoiced when I woke up this morning, because I remembered there's God's way and the world's way.

how I love your way of doing things, God. The day goes so much better when I stick to your directions

is good stuff! and yes the day takes on a different form when we are led by His Spirit and we are open to wanting to do His will

actually, I think a thread on discussing 'what is the will of God' would be a great topic...maybe next time'

going to make some notes on Psalm 119 now...flaked out yesterday evening, so I'll do it now

First off I'll say that we need to keep in mind there was a system of sacrifice for the 'forgiveness of sins' so no amount of law keeping, in the simple way of understanding this some may want to apply, is going to make a person perfect with the understanding that they have not or never sinned

we can say that 'walking in the law' means to take and then follow instruction, basically no different then our walk today. we 'hear' and meaning let it sink in, and then we get up and walk in what we hear...we follow the instructions of God

we have a tendency to skip over words and that looses the meaning or the fullness of what is being said by the writer of this Psalm

here is a breakdown of the first verse and how the writer was applying his knowledge or understanding of the law of God

when I read or study this Psalm, I understand that this person depended on God for understanding of what he wrote and he understands that the end of obedience here is not a sinless life, but a relationship with God

we know the law was given to reveal or expose sin; it was never given in the hope it would be kept and create holiness in a person

OK... about skipping over words... there's like five words that basically mean 'rules'. take a random verse, and substitute one of them for the existing word. Does the meaning or insight change?

Luke 24:44 And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.

45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,

46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:

47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

where did you get it?
hey Dan

let's look at the different words

the graphic is from Bible hub here's the link to the same graphic

law (law of the Lord) : this would not be just rules as the law, collective, is from God and contains far more than just the 10 commandments. There are both positive, meaning what you should do, and negative 'rules' as in do not do (which we tend to focus on) I haven't counted, but there are supposed to be 613 what Jewish people call mitzvot. Tradition follows all of these like day follows night pretty much and the 'law' has become more then the sum of its parts but still does not give a person salvation.

15Brothers and sisters, let me take an example from everyday life. Just as no one can set aside or add to a human covenant that has been duly established, so it is in this case. 16The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. Scripture does not say “and to seeds,” meaning many people, but “and to your seed,”[SUP]i[/SUP] meaning one person, who is Christ.

17What I mean is this:
The law, introduced 430 years later, does not set aside the covenant previously established by God and thus do away with the promise. 18For if the inheritance depends on the law, then it no longer depends on the promise; but God in his grace gave it to Abraham through a promise.

19Why, then, was the law given at all? It was added because of transgressions until the Seed to whom the promise referred had come. The law was given through angels and entrusted to a mediator. 20A mediator, however, implies more than one party; but God is one.

21Is the law, therefore, opposed to the promises of God? Absolutely not! For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come by the law. 22But Scripture has locked up everything under the control of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe. Gal 3

so, if someone insists we must keep the law, consider Pauls' letter to the Galatians, written because they had begun to state that salvation was not through faith only, and note that the law was given to magnify sin, if you will, that is, draw attention to it

this is such a vast subject, I am barely touching on it. a person would really need to study up on it to have a good understanding of the OT tabernacle and how it foreshadowed Christ . it's a very deep subject but really worth the effort

the Psalm begins with the word blessed, resulting from one who walks in God's ways, or statutes. this, is what God has decreed through the law, or Torah collectively, and obedience results in God's blessings.

you don't have to read very far to realize that even though the Psalmist says these things, he fails them at the same time!

5Oh, that my ways were steadfast in obeying your decrees!6Then I would not be put to shame when I consider all your commands.

he is saying, if I were able to obey everything, I would not be shamed when reading them

so first of all he admits, all is perfect with God's law and then he states if he could just keep it, he would not be convicted by them

however, he says his heart will be upright (desiring to follow even though not able to be kept perfect through obedience) as he learns the laws

he says 'I will obey your decrees' and then amazingly says 'do not utterly forsake me'

IMO, a person today who believes they are sinless and brags about it, needs to take a look and pray for understanding to be able to acknowledge the real truth of our situation. here is a man, who is much closer to the law and was brought up in that law, who begs God to not utterly forsake him

that, is a reverent 'fear' of God and acknowledgement that God alone is holy and if keeping the law without a slip up is what is required, then he is lost

hence, the system of animal sacrifice

you can see from the graphic, that the law is considered 'instruction'

getting long, so I'll leave off for now and put more about the words meaning, as you say, rules, later

each verse or section uses repetition of thought to emphasize the author's main point
I honestly do not see repetition here so much as progressive thought and realization of his own condition in light of the law

My personal approach, is to appreciate the depth and the almost painful realization in this man's soul of God's holiness and his incapability to complete the requirements to look God full in the face and say 'I am worthy'. we are never worthy in keeping what cannot be kept. we are only worthy in Christ

the appeal for 'salvation' in the Psalm, is to God's character, not his own character
