Paul tells us in Ephesians 3:3-6, that there was a "mystery" concerning Christ and was not made known "to the sons of men in other generations." This "mystery" that Paul is talking about, is that the gentiles were fellow heirs of the promise of Jesus Christ. Salvation was not just for the Jews. This was mystery was hidden from Paul at one point. Certain things in the Bible that is hidden or not understood, can be brought to light by the Holy Spirit, if one diligently seeks and desires it. Through out Scripture there are hidden messages and symbolism that God has integrated in His word, that if Christians study and humbly ask Him for guidance, God may reveal these things to us. God wants His children to have such desire for studying His word because it separates those with "dull hearts and ears" from those truly wanting to draw closer to our Lord.

In Genesis 5:1-29, it tells us of the genealogy starting from Adam to Noah. When reading the Bible, many of us may have skipped over this long sequence of "begats", but this genealogy is quite significant. Here is the genealogy from Adam to Noah: Adam begat Seth.....Seth begat Enos.....Enos begat Cainan.....Cainan begat Mahalel.....Mahalel begat Jared.....Jared begat Enoch.....Enoch begat Methuselah.....Methuselah begat Lamech.....Lamech begat Noah.
So, does this simple genealogy of the Old Testament have a hidden meaning, foretelling the coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ?

The Hebrew language is unique in that names have meanings: Adam(man) Seth(appointed) Enos(mortal) Cainan(sorrow) Mahalel(the blessed God) Jared(shall come down) Enoch(teaching) Methuselah(his death shall bring) Lamech(the despairing) Noah(rest) The Hebrew language can look confusing when translated too english, so translators must be very careful when inserting words to give the text clarity, without changing the meaning of the context. Inserting words such as: and, but, has, have, etc.

The genealogy reads: Man has appointed mortal sorrow but the blessed God shall come down teaching and His death shall bring the despairing rest

Its worth mentioning that many biblical scholars say that the meanings of these names is a bit tricky. Such as the meaning of Lamech's and Enoch's name. But any sensible person can see that there is some form of intentional design layered in this genealogy. Also at the same sensible thinking, we don't want to go so deep into name meanings that we lose the basic principles of scripture and get caught up with weird doctrines that have nothing to do with Jesus. The filter by way we look through should be Jesus Christ. He is the way, the truth, and the life!

God hides many many things from the wise (in their own eyes and knowledge), but reveals more and more to any willing or able to learn more of what is real, actual, and true (Children).
