While we don't know what the Abomination of Desolation will be, we do know what it triggers and that is the "Great Tribulation" of Israel. Many think this happened back in AD 70 but there was nothing set up in the Temple as the Temple was destroyed. In fact, nothing tells us the A of D is set up in any Temple, just "the holy place", but which holy place is unknown. There are many holy places.
It is clear, this "Abomination" is set up by the invading Muslim forces from the north and this is the trigger of the desolation of Israel by fleeing and slaughter. Consider the below. The location of the Tribulation is clearly Israel, not the whole world as many think. The whole world isn't told to flee, just those in Judea.
Mat 24: [SUP]15 [/SUP]“Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place” (whoever reads, let him understand), [SUP]16 [/SUP]“then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. [SUP]21 [/SUP]For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be.
Daniel says this in regards to the invading Islamic King from the North:
Dan 11: [SUP]31 [/SUP]And forces shall be mustered by him, and they shall defile the sanctuary fortress; then they shall take away the daily sacrifices, and place there the abomination of desolation. [SUP]33 [/SUP]And those of the people who understand shall instruct many; yet for many days they shall fall by sword and flame, by captivity and plundering.
So we see from the above and as compared to many OT passages such as Ezek 38-39, Zec 13, Joel 1, etc, Israel will come under attack. Once the A of D is placed, those in Judea are to flee, run for their lives as it were. Why? It's obvious, they are attacked by overwhelming Muslim forces set out to wipe them off the map. 2/3 of Israelis will be killed. This is why the "desolation" because Israel will become desolate from death and fleeing.
Fortunately, God cuts those Tribulation days of the Muslim invaders inspired by Satan short, otherwise no flesh would be saved. These days are cut short specifically for the ELECT of Israel.
Mat 24: [SUP]22 [/SUP]And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened.
Now it makes sense why the Lord must again gather the ELECT back to Him when He returns, because they were scattered by the Great Tribulation.
Mat 24: [SUP]31 [/SUP]And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
The ELECT are gathered from whence they were scattered and are now seen with Jesus upon His return:
Rev 14: Then I looked, and behold, a Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with Him one hundred and forty-four thousand, having His Father’s name written on their foreheads.
