Looking for Job

Job 9:
There is no person to decide between us,
Who could serve as our judge.

- In a relationship with God, there are only two beings: God and us!

- We mustn’t let anybody interfere with our relationship with God!

- People can help us make it stronger but at the end of the times, it’s up to us!

- We can only accuse ourselves, not the others!

- If we let others to govern our relationship with God, it’s our own mistake!

Looking for Job

Job 10
Did you not pour me out like milk
And curdle me like cheese?

- From milk to cheese: Job tells us that God built us!

- In fact, there is a big difference between MILK and CHEESE!

- Cheese is an elaborated product!

- And we are an elaborated product!

- And this society has turned into a really bad cheese!

- Hopefully, thanks to God and how he made us, there is still some good cheese!

- And Job will always be a really good one!

Looking for Job

Job 10
Then Job says in reply:
Surely you are the people who know,
And wisdom will die out with you!

- If we didn’t know Job’s situation, would we think about someone so combative?

- Difficult to think so!

- So precise!

- Wisdom is a journey which never ends!

- And the beginning of this journey is humility: no humility, no journey, no wisdom!

Looking for Job

Job 12
With him there are strength and practical
wisdom;
To him belong the one going astray and the
one leading astray;

- He is the only one who can lead humanity!

- It is completely lost!

- And we know where it is going and it is dark!

- Emptiness!

- Only God can bring brightness!

Looking for Job

Job 13
He will surely rebuke you
If you secretly try to show favoritism.
Will not his very dignity terrify you
And the dread of him fall upon you?

- It is premonitory!

- Job knows God well!

- It tells about his special relationship with him!

- But they don’t care!

- Pride!

- Self-satisfaction!

- They are not afraid!

- They can be lucky that God put their destiny in Job’s hands!

- He could have struck them more severely!

- The religious leaders act the same way!

Looking for Job

Job 14
Man, born of woman,
Is short-lived and filled with trouble.

- Job speaks about man’s life!

- “short-lived”: Job is old when he speaks!

- But what does old mean!

- When we get older, we are old physically!

- But are we old mentally?

- The brain has so many abilities!

- And the more we live the more connections we can get!

- And we never use all what we have!

- And like the universe, the brain has no limit!

- So yes, man’s life is too short!

- And man is not made for such a short life!

- Otherwise what do we have such a powerful brain?

- But yes, in this world, our lives are filled with trouble!

- And Job knows what he speaks about because the devil is after him and he doesn’t know it!

Looking for Job

Job 14
You keep overpowering him until he perishes;
You change his appearance, and you send him
away.
His sons are honored, but he does not know it;
They become insignificant, but he does not
realize it.
He feels pain only while he is still in his flesh;
He mourns only while he is still alive.”

- Yes, Job speaks about the devil but he doesn’t know it!

- Yes, the devil does everything so we can look like him!

- Yes, the devil does everything he can to strike us!

- And people think it is God!

- He does with humanity what he did with Job!

- It is remarkable or should I say shocking that the devil always repeat his action against man and man thinks it is God!

- But man never learns anything!

- If he doesn’t have God’s spirit, he is good to nothing, but nothing at all!

Looking for Job

Job 16
My companions ridicule me
As my eye sheds tears to God.

- Job’s mind is clear!

- He knows what the men who are with him do with him!

- He knows that they are fighting against him!

- He knows that they don’t care about him!

- He knows that they don’t do anything for him!

- They just want to please their own ears!

- They just want to prove themselves right!

Looking for Job

Job 19
Job says in reply:

How long will you keep irritating my soul,
Crushing me with words?
These ten times you have rebuked me;
You are not ashamed to deal harshly with
me.

- It is incredible!

- Each time his opponents wants to strike Job it only makes him more combative!

- Think about:

- “IRRITATING MY SOUL”!

- “CRUSHING ME WITH WORDS?”

- “TEN TIMES YOU HAVE REBUKED ME”

- “YOU ARE NOT ASHAMED TO DEAL HARSHLY WITH ME”!

- We definitely know what they are doing against Job!

- It is not possible to think the contrary!

- We just need to hear Job’s own words!

- And what WORDS!

Looking for Job

Job 21
Why do the wicked live on,
Grow old, and become wealthy?
Their children are always in their presence,
And they get to see their descendants.
Their houses are secure, they are free from fear
And God does not punish them with his rod.
Their bulls breed without failure;
Their cows give birth and do not miscarry.
Their boys run outside just like a flock,
And their children skip about.
They sing accompanied by tambourine and harp
And rejoice at the sound of the flute.
They spend their days in contentment
And go down peacefully to the Grave.
But they say to the true God, ‘Leave us alone!
We have no desire to know your ways.
Who is the Almighty, that we should serve him?
What would we gain by being acquainted with him?’
They spend their days in contentment
And go down peacefully to the Grave.
But they say to the true God, ‘Leave us alone!
We have no desire to know your ways.
Who is the Almighty, that we should serve him?
What would we gain by being acquainted with him?’

- Job suffers and feels bad!

- This enhances that the bad ones enjoy life!

- For him, life is not fair!

- When he had a good life he could have said the contrary!

- We are influenced by our own living conditions!

- We know that in this world life is not always fair!

- We also know that anything can happen!

- We must always be ready to fight!

Looking for Job

Job 29

I used to say, ‘I will die in my own home,
And my days will be as numerous as the grains of sand.
My roots will spread out into the waters,
And dew will stay all night on my branches.
My glory is constantly renewed,
And the bow in my hand will keep shooting.’
People would listen expectantly,
Waiting in silence for my advice.
After I had spoken, they had nothing more to say;
My words would fall gently on their ears.
They waited for me as for the rain;
They opened their mouth wide as for the spring rain.
When I smiled at them, they could hardly believe it;
The light of my face would reassure them.
I gave them direction as their head,
And I lived like a king among his troops,
Like one who comforts the mourners.

- Job had a normal life !

- He couldn’t imagine it would change so fast !

- That he would lose everything !

- And hope in life !

- Everybody would listen to him and keep silent !

- He was highly appreciated !

Looking for Job

Job 31
Have the men of my tent not said,

Who can find anyone who has not been satisfied with his food?’
No stranger had to spend the night outside;
I opened my doors to the traveler.

- Hospitality!

Have I ever tried to cover over my transgressions, like other men,
By hiding my error in the pocket of my garment?
Have I been in fear of the reaction of the multitude,
Or have I been terrified by the contempt of other families,
Making me silent and afraid to go outside?

- Justice!

- Everywhere we get written speeches written by other people!

- It’s like singers who sing songs written by others!

- Words!

- But is a speech true?

- Personally I have never been able to listen to a speech!

- Everywhere you get people who speak on TV, on the radio, they speak and speak to fill the gaps!

- It’s like inflation!

- And it rains words and more words!

- But what do we do with empty words!

- A society of empty words with no more meaning!

- Everything is diluted!

- Is that what’s left?

- I believe in real life!

- And the Bible is real life with some individuals having a deep connection to God whereas the majority doesn’t!

- Yes, I believe in that!

- But I don’t believe in the wind!

God and Job / Job and God

Job 2: Three companions of Job hear about all the calamities that have come upon him, and each comes from his own place—Elʹi·phaz the Teʹman·ite, Bilʹdad the Shuʹhite, and Zoʹphar the Naʹa·ma·thite. So they agree to meet together to go and sympathize with Job and comfort him. When they see him from a distance, they do not recognize him. They begin to weep loudly and to rip their garments apart, and they throw dust into the air and onto their heads. Then they sit on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights. No one says a word to him, for they see that his pain is very great.

- The devil has kept his most powerful weapon for the end!

- He uses three men Job knows!

- And at first, they are willing to help him!

- They weep loudly!

- They rip their garments apart!

- They throw dust into the air and onto their heads!

- And they sit with him for seven days and seven nights without saying anything!

- And after that they are going to fight against him constantly!

- He won’t have any time to rest!

Death and Dying in the Middle East
Sami A. Hanna

Death and dying are universal realities for all creations in every country and cultural area. What makes death and dying so interesting is that its treatment varies from one country to another and from one culture to another. For example, if we take Europe as a whole, its people meet death and behave differently from the people of the Middle East.
We know something about the people of the Middle East, but we are not well acquainted with certain important cultural patterns of that area. When we go as Americans or Europeans, we focus our attention on movements, tourist attractions, etc., but we seldom care to see or investigate how the Middle Eastern people respond to death and dying.
Since this area is predominantly Muslim, our attention is focused on the attitudes and beliefs of the people of this faith. Most examples presented are derived from the Holy Qur’an, the Hadith, and other Islamic texts. Other basic sources are Hughes’ Dictionary of Islam, the Encyclopedia of Islam, and my own personal experiences and observations. I have relied on these latter books through this presentation, but I have not sought to cite page numbers in every instance, except when quoting from passages in the Qur’an.
First, however, I would like to share with you my impressions, as a Middle Easterner, of my first experience with an American funeral, which took place in Salt Lake City. The father of one of my very close friends died. I wanted, of course, to express my condolences to him but learned that such condolences are expressed in a mortuary. I located the mortuary and went there. I found myself in a large building with several rooms, each of which was reserved for a deceased person. A man ushered me into one of the rooms. When I entered and approached the family, I was utterly shocked. The family was standing in line, friends were also standing in line, so I stood in line. When my turn came, I expressed my sympathy to my friend. However, what was even more shocking to me was the spirit in which the family received me. “Look how nice he is. Doesn’t he look wonderful?” These and other things were said in a joyful spirit. To be honest, I expected to see the family of the deceased crying and screaming as in the Middle Eastern culture. But that was not the case. After viewing the deceased in his half-open casket, I returned home wondering how death in America, at least in this Mormon setting, could be received with such joy and happiness. When I asked my friend about this attitude, I was told that death is a transition—a bridge to a happy and everlasting life in heaven.
Such a belief caused me to ponder and to ask myself why we receive death completely differently in the Middle East than in the West? Why do we cry and scream for at least a year? Why do men wear black ties and women black garments? Why do we abstain from everything sweet, from food, from even listening to the radio? Why do the neighbors turn off their radios as a token of sympathy? Why do we remain in mourning for at least forty days?

God and Job / Job and God

Job 19:

- They irritate his soul!

- They deal harshly with him!

- When we listen carefully to Job speaking of the three individuals and we connect it to God’s judgment regarding the three individuals, we understand better and realize how Job was right when he spoke about their attitude!

- They just want to show that they are better than Job!

- And Job is asking God why so much violence!

- And he gets no answer!

- And he keeps crying out but there is no justice!

- Everybody has left him!

- He doesn’t understand anything!

- That’s why the devil is tricky and vicious!

- He knows all that!

- And he is laughing!
