I am thinking of memorizing a large portion of the book of Matthew. I got the idea from my pastor. Anyone do this?I am just trying to decide which version to use. I am thinking of the nkjv , the esv or the NIV. I want it to be in modern english so the old king jimmy is out. I would like your input.

Nice idea but I'm lousy at memorizing specific verses.
Instead I memorize passage blocks where I can recall what section of Scripture covers what subject matter.

KJV was good enough for Jesus its good enough for me........LoL

Seriously the KJ is reconnized any where you speak it. I know many passages, however when you don't use it you forget it. And while you are young at 16 now is the time. Put it in your heart/mind and you will never be sorry. Good Luck!

About 15 years ago I thought I was going to do the same, and memorize one of the gospels. I chose Mark because it would be less to memorize.
I got a couple chapters memorized I think, then faded off from the project.

My observation is this, that the KJV, for me anyway, is easier to memorize verbatim, because it is a bit of a "foreign" language with all the "thus" and "thou" jargon. It separates it a bit from our modern way of communicating and is more of a "shock" to the brain during memorization.
Same way it is easier to remember song lyrics or a poem than other texts of similar length and content.

I'm not suggesting it over whatever version you prefer, just thought I'd point that out in case it helps.

Memorizing a large portion could take time because of have to do a small portion at a time but the more scripture we know the more we can share anytime.

I am not 16. I am 37. The sermon on the mount is what I am going to do. Memorizing the greatest sermon ever preached.

Psa 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

I learned scripture back in the dark ages when all I had were homemade falsh cards and the KJV. (Of course I am being a little facetious here.) So now, when I recall a scripture, it is in KJV language. That is not a bad thing, it is just how I learned. I do recall memory scriptures in the KJV and sometimes have to look it up in other translations, but the KJV has stood me in good stead.

I have been working on memorizing 1 Peter 1.
I have the 1st 16 verses down, and have the rest paraphrase-able. Another couple days and I should have it.

I found ESV a really good one to memorize. NASB is what I use to study, but it can have awkward word order/sentence structure.

There are lots of scriptures worth memorizing, well it's all worth it, but chapters are where most people start. Psalm 1, Isaiah 53 and such. Pick out the ones you like and hide them in your heart.

My mother taught me the Lords prayer to Father when I learned to talk. Then I had 8 school grades of bible learning. Each year at Christmas in church we recited the Story of Christ starting with the first graders and the part they had to memorize and all the way up to eighth grade so by that time I had quite a lot of scripture memorized. Not to mention seventh and eighth grade bible instruction of many other verses that we had to memorize.

But I think the better thing to do is to study the understanding of verses, not the words themselves. As there are many bible translations out there and when you are in a discussion with someone who learns a particular version or translation you want to be able to instruct the proper understanding no matter what the exact words of the verse say.

Knowledge + understanding of Holy Spirit = wisdom. Paul said from a child thou hast known the Holy scriptures, the understanding as you grow in Christ which are able to make thee wise as in wisdom unto salvation. Just memorizing scripture does nothing except with the understanding.

Yes! I know a lot of James by memory, NKJV too because 90% of my bibles are that translation. I like the Psalms too because they are very manageable and applicable as prayers and songs. Do it!

Exactly HOW LARGE a "portion" are you speaking of?
