4 [/SUP]And coming to Him as to a living stone which has been rejected by men, but is [SUP][i][/SUP]choice and precious in the sight of God, [SUP]5 [/SUP]you also, as living stones, [SUP][j][/SUP]are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. [SUP]6 [/SUP]For this is contained in [SUP][k][/SUP]Scripture:
“Behold, I lay in Zion a choice stone, a precious corner stone,
And he who believes in [SUP][l][/SUP]Him will not be [SUP][m][/SUP]disappointed.”
[SUP]
7 [/SUP]This precious value, then, is for you who believe; but for those who disbelieve,
“The stone which the builders rejected,
This became the very corner stone,”
[SUP]
8 [/SUP]and,
“A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense”;
for they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, and to this doom they were also appointed.
[SUP]9 [/SUP]But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; [SUP]10 [/SUP]for you once were not a people, but now you are the people of God; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
[SUP]
11 [/SUP]Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against the soul. [SUP]12 [/SUP]Keep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles, so that in the thing in which they slander you as evildoers, they may [SUP][n][/SUP]because of your good deeds, as they observe them, glorify God in the day of [SUP][o][/SUP]visitation.
11 In the Lord I take refuge;
How can you say to my soul, “Flee as a bird to your mountain;
[SUP]2 [/SUP]For, behold, the wicked bend the bow,
They [SUP][a][/SUP]make ready their arrow upon the string
To shoot in darkness at the upright in heart.
[SUP]3 [/SUP]If the foundations are destroyed,
What can the righteous do?”
[SUP]
4 [/SUP]The Lord is in His holy temple; the [SUP][b][/SUP]Lord’s throne is in heaven;
His eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men.
[SUP]5 [/SUP]The Lord tests the righteous and the wicked,
And the one who loves violence His soul hates.
[SUP]6 [/SUP]Upon the wicked He will rain [SUP][c][/SUP]snares;
Fire and brimstone and burning wind will be the portion of their cup.
[SUP]7 [/SUP]For the Lord is righteous, He loves [SUP][d][/SUP]righteousness;
The upright will behold His face.
66 Thus says the Lord,
“Heaven is My throne and the earth is My footstool.
Where then is a house you could build for Me?
And where is a place that [SUP][a][/SUP]I may rest?
[SUP]2 [/SUP]“For My hand made all these things,
Thus all these things came into being,” declares the Lord.
“But to this one I will look,
To him who is humble and contrite of spirit, and who trembles at My word.
No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you.
