Hi all,
I am looking to invest in a commentary, a bible dictionary and concordance.
I have heard that Strings and Matthew Henry are very good and well known resources.
Could people please make any recommendations?

Strong's is the first thing to go for. Matthew Henry, Barclay's, Jamieson Fausset and Brown, Albert Barnes are very good, but my second choice after Strong's would be Bullinger's Companion Bible.

If you want a very good library with limited capital to spend, download Esword and then there are literally hundreds of tools available for download free. Esword comes with Strong's and there are free downloads from their website. Another good place for Esword tools is www.biblesupport.com where there are many, many free downloads.

Hope this helps.

Smith's Bible Dictionary - Thomas Nelson - $15 bucks, Nothing like a printed copy.

The Companion Bible - E. W. Bullinger ( I recommend Large Print ) - Kregel Publishing - $100 and lower, depending on where u buy it

Strong's Concordance ( Large Print ) Thomas Nelson Publishing - $ 35

How to Enjoy the Bible - E. W. Bullinger

Greek Lexicon & Concordance NT - E. W. Bullinger - $ 35

And, if your want to have a copy of the Manuscripts :

Green's Interlinear 4 Volume OT & NT - Hendrickson Publishing - around $100

How to Read the Bible for all its worth by Gordon Fee and Douglas Stuart is a great starting point to get a grip on genres, types of translations. Fee is a renowned Bible scholar and Greek expert.

I highly recommend The Linguistic and Exegetical Key to the Greek New Testament by Cleon L. Rogers Jr. and Cleon L. Rogers III. It goes into all the verb tenses and noun cases and explains the context for key words in each book of the New Testament.

For the Old Testament The Brown-Driver-Briggs Hebrew and English Lexicon is the standard. It uses Strong's Concordance Coded numbers, but learning the Hebrew alphabet (just consonants!) would be a big help to your studies.

I have loads of book commentaries. The ones in which the Bible is contained in a single book are not in-depth enough. But the book set commentaries are all very expensive, sad to say. The New Testament set I like the most is "The New International Commentary on the New Testament" which goes very deep into the Greek. But expensive!

Good luck on your Bible studies!

I wonder if you all would help me in addition to Mooky? It was explained to me that in the last 70 or so years through archeology there is new understanding of ancient language so scripture can be better understood. Usually the men who work with the Dead Sea Scrolls, I am told, know of this.

Have any of you come across this, or found a way to use this information in your bible study?

I recommend that you invest in Strongs or Youngs concordance , after you have a trustworthy Bible translation, like New KJV or the New Amer.Standard , Do not use the oldKJV ,it is not good, as redtent said, the schorship of 1600's is not as good as today. Your last resort is a commentary. But Books by John Mac Arthur are very good, but he is fudging on some passages and seems he is trying to please some of his enemies, those who hate the real Gospel of the Lordship of Christ. He is a Pre-Triber, you have to be careful with pre tribbes, they read too much into or delete from texts and they get too nasty. I would recommend you use the internet and find all the library you need there. I have very few books with me here in the philippines and I find I don' need them. Matthew Henry is one of the best read on salvation, to be found, but he knows nothing about eschatology. The Reformers did us good but not so good. Some of the Roman Cath. theologians read better on sal. then the Ref. "faith only" slant at time , like: Justification by faith only ,is not Biblical. ( grace ,faith and works justi.). If you want to hear real Gospel, look up Rev. Albert Martin, sermons, Montville Trinity Baptist Church,He is a Ref. bap., so he is way off on eschatology. Joanathen Edwards is one of the best Ref.theo. His book ,Religious Affections, is super. John Piper is great. Chuck Swindol is bad on sal. and esch.. beware Dallas Theo.Sem..

Thanks, Crossnote. I checked Comfort out, but he is more expert in Greek, I see, where most of the new discoveries were of more ancient languages. When I checked on authors of ancient biblical history, I found authors that cited this in their backgrounds but they were usually professors in colleges teaching biblical history.

I found Tom Bradford who has used ancient Hebrew studies as his background, but Tom is very convinced that we must use closer and more knowledgeable study of the ancient part of our bible, so that is part of his work. I would like to find other students of ancient Hebrew for study, also.
