It is common amongst some atheists and cultists to claim material similarities between Jesus and Horus, Mithra Dionysus, and Krishna.
Today someone came into the chat room using similar claims in an attempt to discredit the NT accounts of Jesus' life in a similar manner.
Atheists will attempt to use this to claim that the gospels were creations based on Horus, Mithra, Dionysus and Krisha. They claim that Jesus was a "copycat savior" and that the Gospel narratives about him are fake.
Cults will do something similar, and claim that Christianity is syncretic in nature and incorporates elements of the worship of Horus, Mithra, Dionysus, or Krishna. The attempt is to discredit Christianity and exalt their own false teachings.
A similar thesis was proposed by Alexander Hislop in his academically discredited book The Two Babylons, which some cults and other groups like Hebrew Roots Movement/Messianic Jews consider to be credible. Hislop considered all pagan gods to be, in essence, a form of Nimrod and Semiramis worship, which he considered to be the Babylonian Mystery Religion.
He tried to relate the Babylonian Mystery Religion to Roman Catholicism. Cults have extended this Babylonian Mystery Religion accusation to Protestantism as well as Roman Catholicism.
Hislop's attempt was to discredit Roman Catholicism, but cults extended his thesis to include all Protestants as unknowingly worshipping pagan gods.
Michael at InspiringPhilosophy made some very good videos in this regard that are worth checking out. His videos prove that the similarities are not material. Check the playlist out:
