Is it right to openly confess your sins to the public?

Confessing sins does not mean what many believe it to be. I don't have to, nor will I tell everything I've done wrong or bad to another person. Confession of sins is simply realizing, talking and acting like one who understands that all is on the same boat.

Public as in standing on the street sure why not. But in a time in our life we will confess our sins to love ones and ask forgiven.

Believers are told confess their faults one towards another. This would obviously be to believers you totally trust and not just to anyone. So no, I would not share your faults with just anyone (Unless you feel by the Spirit you can trust that person).

The ultimate version of confession of sin should be to God so as to be cleansed of sin (See 1 John 2:1, and 1 John 1:9). Confession of sin to believers is so that they can pray for you to overcome a sin that you might be struggling with.

Confession of sins to a priest is Unbiblical and wrong.

Only God can forgive you of sin. Only Jesus is our Mediator between God and man.

Now, I can see a case where somebody might need to step down as a church member and openly confess their sins so as to get right with God and other people (So as to clear up false teaching). But that is a different matter. However, a believer should not openly admit their sins to unbelievers unless they are trying to lead them to the Lord.

Remember, our past sins are forgiven in Jesus Christ when we repented and accepted Christ. To declare them to the public (inappropriately) when they are forgiven would give folks the wrong impression of the new life that you are now living in Jesus.

Be sure your sins will find you out. Better to confess them at the foot of the cross than to be discovered.

As a believer we have a priesthood that allows is to go to God as an individual to represent ourselves because Christ is our high priest. If we sin we have ans advocate and we can confess our sin to God directly and He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins. Confessing our faults to one another is when we are lead of God to do so because we need to humble ourselves in person to another believer who is mature and whom we trust not to repeat the matter. It is usually something we have a difficult time to lay aside as it hinders our walk with God. These are usually isolated times and God is able to give us grace as we humble ourselves in the sight of God in these matters.

Another thought here..............IF we sin against a brother or sister.......then we must reconcile with them........

Matthew 5:21-48 ESV
“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire. So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison.

So, in a way, this is a public confession of sin..........well.........between us and them.......but it could be to the whole family....
