If the desires of your heart agree with the desires of His heart they will be given to you. Sometimes what we desire, although appear to us as things we need, is not necessarily in His plan for us. So if you desire a child, but never have one, than the Lord has a ministry for you that could never be accomplished if you were "burden-down" with children. (Not that children are a burden!) That is why one says, the Lord's will be done, don't fulfill my desires Lord unless they are good for you.......and me.

I hate when people say stuff like that. And more over i hate when people quote that verse to me. i think sometimes people think of god as some magical genie. This is life. Sometimes people get married sometimes they dont. Some people have kids some dont. If you dont find someone to marry, it might be because you just havent found anyone. I dont think that has anything to do with god not bringing someone in your life.

I'm having trouble understanding Psalm 37:4 ("Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart"). Everyone always quotes that verse when I talk about wanting a husband or children, but I don't feel too sure. Obviously some of our desires don't ever get fulfilled because God doesn't give us everything we want. And what about situations where a godly desire goes unfulfilled? Like someone wanting to go into ministry and it doesn't happen, or a Christian couple wanting kids and not being able to have any? How are those things explained if the verse means that if you put God first, He'll give you the things that you desire?
There are several scriptures which clearly prove that what we often express with our mouths, is not the true desire of our hearts. One such scripture is found in Matthew 15:8

...These people honor me with their mouths, but their hearts are far from me...

Even when someone says, I Love You, often it can be an expected part of a routine, or a conditioned response, and all of this, without truly expressing a heart felt desire. I believe that God knows the good things we sincerely desire and has a willingness to bring those things to pass. Sometimes it's a matter of faith, at other times unfulfilled plans or desires may be a matter of having asked with wrong motives.

I believe that God rewards diligence, in seeking, patiently waiting, in faith, and with perseverence. With regard to ministry, there are some who pattern their vision after other ministries, and when their ministry doesn't bear fruit, they simply quit, or decide to do something else. I've seen this with at least two friends of mine. One had a great zealousness to preach and to reach the lost. We met in hotel rooms for a while, and then in a rented church, the last place was a 3 story building which he had purchased. He planned to use the 3rd floor of the building as a gymnasium for the youth. Because of personal struggles, I resigned my position and slowly others began to leave until the Pastor himself, with his wife, moved to another city.

If God met our every whim and every desire we perceived to be good or godly, we would quickly overlook one major point when considering the desires of our hearts. God wants 'quality'. He values the quality that is produced after years of diligence, the quality that is produced in faithful service while waiting for answers to prayer, and the quality that is produced when, even after hell itself has come against a particular dream or vision, they stand fast, waiting for a sure word from the Lord before moving on, closing up, or giving up on their dream or vision.

Many people think that the desires of their hearts must be consistent with some ministerial purpose. They could not be further from the truth. There are many singers, songwriters, architects, lawyers and businessmen, who had dreams, and fulfilled these dreams. For example, I don't know of too many people who work for employers who are poor, and therefore it is a Godly dream to own and operate a company or business, because someone has to provide jobs for godly people.

I believe that anyone who sets out to fulfill a dream, a vision, or a desire, should first pray and ask God what the true desire of their heart is, and that person should have a complete understanding of his/her gifts, abilities and talents. If the desire is for a mate, or a material thing, great patience is often involved. Count the cost!

Luke 14:28

...don't begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first counting the cost to see if they have enough to finish it...
