Correct, but Jesus went on to defeat death and Hell. So, in the Spirit, we share in that triumph 
"Be faithful even unto death, and I will give you the Crown of Life." (Rev 2:10)

Two reasons I would say. The first would be a warning, a sign to look out for, amid those who claim to be of the faith yet do not change their ways at all.
Evedence therefore that someone is not saved when they still sin as openly as they did prior. Thinking they've assumed some security blanket that will keep them out of trouble when they're dead as if the label saves .
And secondly, in the case of some church authorities and denominations, OSAS is refuted by some passages interjected by said church whose authorities have a vested financial interest in keeping their faithful dependent on the church as their link to remain in grace.
Which is why I have always said, finding out how the bible was compiled, by whom, and the many edits , omissions and additions, added to the book over a period of more than 1200 years, and 40 different authors, and numerous councils decreeing what would be allowed and what not in the final draft is imperative to understand why there is so much contradiction in the new testament.
Which is why Omniscient God foreseeing this to come tells us not to believe every spirit but to test them and see if their teaching comports with the spirit ofThe Word. Because in the last days, those days being from the moment Jesus ascended promising to return when the father alone knows and wills, there will be false prophets and teachers seeking to deceive even the elect.
There are many a Christian who will say they believe in the bible.
The bible does not save us. Believing in God and discerning his consistent message, which is in scripture by his power and authority is what leads us to him.
God's breath, The Word, that is God. Not script on a page. God in the book showing us his message there. Unable to be abrogated or corrupted by politics and selfish acts of men and their profile that is akin to autodeism, do exist. And are consistent in the very simplistic message of truth and eternal life.
God saves.
God leads us to himself and we are eternally saved, forgiven, irrevocably, the moment we believe. Because faith/belief and Salvation are irrevocable gifts of God through his grace.
He forgives our sins eternally. No longer are we dead in them as worldly sinners. We are instead reborn from the wellspring of living water that is indwelling holy spirit. That enters us the moment we receive the gift of faith and irrevocable Salvation.
Thirsty as damned sinners. Quenched and regenerated as new creations, those born again, in the grace of the living water that is Savior, who with his blood washed us clean the moment we accepted his sacrifice for our sins reunited us with our source, God.
Shattering the veil this world's trappings dropped over our consciousness. Leading us to believe flesh was sovereign and carnal worldly drives were sustenance. And all there is.
Now we know better.
The veil is lifted. The Son shines upon our faces and souls. And with God's holy spirit leading our steps we are not alone. We can face anything.
Which is why we're told, and this is the true meaning of those passages, if we persevere to the end of our lives, face what comes, we shall be blessed. Take heart, follow through, face life. Because we bear the armor of God and do not walk alone. We are eternally safe and protected, no matter what. Because we are holy,temples, carrying spirit within us. We are flesh,soul,spirit. ALL is of and from God.
When we received God's free gift, that Jesus paid for with his life, we were sealed eternally with the holy spirit that entered us and revived and refreshed body,mind,spirit,soul. An ongoing bubbling spring of living water within us. Never ever to thirst for truth,sanctity,peace,or righteous guidance again.
Even if life kills us, we win! ❤️ Because we were eternally alive through it all. And this life is God's journey as creator and creation. We are,as he tells us, one with God.
In truth we could never have been anything else or anything less. Because all that is, as we read in the beginning, is created by and from the creator.
Thinking the world
all important and all there is is an illusion. Just as is thinking we were ever separated from our source.
Salvation means we're rescued from that dread filled illusion.
The blood of a man murdered by a worldly authority of both teme and state. A man who died at their hands as all men did.
But then resurrected as more than the flesh and blood he laid down as sacrifice on that altar those men errected. Unbeknownst to them, they created the altar that ended their dominion illusion.
That man paid the price that took the sins of the world upon himself. Showing us the fallible flesh will suffer, err, and die.
While the truth lives eternally. We are more than flesh,blood,sinew, and bone.
God breathed, God's breath, into the nostrils of Adam, "Adamu" , and he became a living soul.
God has always been with us. Salvation is when the skin of this worldly perspective we wear upon our self is laid down and returned to the dust, right perspective, from which it sprang . And what resurrects from that state of death thinking the world and our thoughts about it and our place in it are all there is and that's life, is the new born creation in Christ. Born again means we know we are in God and God is with-in us.
And no one can take us from his hand.Ever. Because God is all there is.
Think you need water emersion to secure salvation? You are water!
By God's will and creation the human body is 3/4th's water. Living water.
3/4th's of the earth surface is living water.
Awakening to the awareness of God within fills that 1/4 gap. Now you know!
You are more. You are filled with the source of all life and creation.

Did you read verse 17: "All unrighteousness is sin, yet there is sin that does not lead to death."
Do you believe there is "sin that does not lead to death"? St. Augustine called this Venial Sin.
Regarding your question, there is no limit to how many times a person can repent, because God is Infinite Love and Infinite Mercy.
However, we should not go on sinning, because there is a possibility we could love sin so much that we would not want to repent.

For those who believe "all our sins, past, present and future are forgiven when we are born again", can you show me a verse that says that?
Below is a verse that says we are cleansed from "past sins"
2 Pet 1:
"5For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith virtue; and to virtue, knowledge; 6and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. 8For if you possess these qualities and continue to grow in them, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9But whoever lacks these traits is nearsighted to the point of blindness, having forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins.
10Therefore, brothers, strive to make your calling and election sure. For if you practice these things you will never stumble, 11and you will receive a lavish reception into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
When we sin again, especially if we sin gravely, we confess our sin to be forgiven, like King David, when Nathan confronted him:
1 Jn 1:
"8If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

Yes, I have read 1 John and understand the construct of that particular passage. He was speaking of sins committed by a believer in which physical death is was not immediately dispensed. There is a sin the does, but he didn’t elaborate on it specifically.
Eventually we all die physically, as it is appointed unto men to once die, but after this the judgment. I just want to know where and how a person might lose their salvation. Didn’t Jesus say that those that were given to Him by the Father shall never be lost except to the one doomed to destruction?

Should be Philippians 4:20 . But, Romans 11:36 gives glory to God as well
