Failing the grace of God.
1Jn 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Heb 12:15 See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble …
When we have confessed our sins but fail to believe we are forgiven, and fail to forget our sins and put them behind us, we have failed to believe the full extent of the grace of God. If we have a guilty conscience and are full of self-loathing and recrimination, or feel we must do penance for our sin, we have failed or come short of the grace of God. Whatever the sin, once it is confessed we are to forget the sin as God does, and move on in the spiritual life. We have been set free to live the Christian life under the filling of the Holy Spirit. No one is without sin, and we all give in to temptation from time to time, but we are to deal with it as the scriptures instructs and have the same attitude towards our sin that God does. The redeemed are to look forward not backwards.
Isa 44:22 "I have wiped out your transgressions like a thick cloud And your sins like a heavy mist. Return to Me, for I have redeemed you."
Psa 103:12 As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us.
Php 3:13 but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead,
(I wrote the above to reinforce this principle in my own mind and hope it benefits others as well.)
