Jesus also said what repentance meant . Change of mind '

Matt 21 .
28¶But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard.

29He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went.

He changed his mind ( repented ) and went.

none of us are perfect but that should never preclude us from striving
for perfection even knowing we will not get there...God doesn't ask
us to be the best but to be the best we can be
In Matthew 5:48, Jesus tells us to be perfect as our Father which is in heaven is perfect. God told Abraham, walk before me and be perfect.

I do not think God or Jesus Christ will tell us to do what they know is impossible for us to do. How do we even think that, with all the resources our Father has provided for us in Christ Jesus. We have been given the vision to be holy and perfect as our Father which is in heaven and we must achieve that vision through the means provided for us in the holy scripture.

There is a saying that goes, if we know where we are going, we will get there eventually if we persevere but how do you get to your destination if in the first place you do not know where that destination is? . Striving without the achievement of the vision in mind is not enough.

I think as Christians, we should always stress the fact that it is possible for man to be perfect and reflect the fullness of God here on earth as our Lord Jesus exemplified to us.

Well, if the best we can be includes sinning, then God requires more from us.!

How do you define perfect?
To be Perfect means:

1. to be holy and without blame in love Ephesians 1:4
2. to be filled with the fullness of God Ephesians 3:19
3. to reach unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ Ephesians 4:13
4. reaching that state of spirituality where there is neither Jew nor Greek, neither bond nor free, neither male nor female for we are all one in Christ Jesus Galatia 3: 23
5. complete in God. Since we derive our completeness in God, we reach that state where we receive his fullness.
6, etc

Thank you! To be complete in God is the one I align with most, finding my all in all in Him :)

' tell us ' ? He told ' them ' .Why is everyone saying " Jesus told us ,,, " ? Who is Jesus talking to ?

Christians often scold other Christians for trying to be perfect before the Lord. They point out that it is impossible to achieve perfection and it is prideful to even try. They point to the fact that our personal righteousness does not save us, we are misinformed to even try to achieve it.

Repentance would necessarily mean working toward our personal ability to be righteous. Jesus told us in His very first message to us to repent.

Matthews 4:17 From then on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven has become near”.
Amen because this is the truth , is why he began teaching them to repent and believe the gospel he was preaching

“I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭13:3‬ ‭KJV‬‬

he would be negligent if he didn’t make thier need for repentance clear from the beginning to end of the gospel .

It’s one of the reasons he came

“And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician;

but they that are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭5:31-32‬ ‭KJV‬‬

It’s how belief leads is to repentance , we believe what he was teaching and saying just believe and be saved some don’t think repentance is needed , they need to repent of that belief and believe the gospel

in other words they simply need to acknowledge the truth of your post there that repentance is a basic and fundamental doctrine of the everlasting gospel .

if we believe sin doesn’t apply and we are never going to be held to account we will live our lives that way , but in order to believe that we have to reject what Jesus taught about repentance and salvation.

if we understand the truth of repentance we will move in those things and free ourselves from serving the enemy through sin in the world , and believe the gospel which is Gods will for mankind

“; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;

And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.”
‭‭2 Timothy‬ ‭2:24-26‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Repentance is Part of the salvation process an urgent part . we can only know that if we believe the truth of the gospel and disregard all the voices out there in the world telling us what God said is not what to believe . Then God will shape our lives and well know what walking by faith means

“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭10:17‬ ‭KJV‬‬

I personally think repentance is internal and what’s internal is what manifest sin our actions . I think we believe wrong so we live wrong we need to repent and believe the truth like your op , which will lead us home to the father waiting patiently for us

Does a person need to do this before they can recieve the Holy Spirit unto the day of redemption?
Well, what did the scripture say? The Holy Spirit among other things, guides us into all truths. How do we know the truth if we do not walk in the Spirit or be guided by the Holy Spirit?

In Romans 8:11 we read, But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwells in you. We cannot achieve anything without the Spirit of God.

The Holy Spirit teaches and puts us in remembrance of the works and words of our Lord Jesus Christ so that we do not perish for lack of knowledge. He reminds us of sin, righteousness and judgement so that we can walk in the light and not perish for lack of knowledge. He gives us spiritual illumination. As Paul said, if we say we are in the light, we must also walk in the light. if we say we are in the spirit, we must also walk in the spirit.

It is not enough to say we believe in him. We must also suffer with him (Philippians 1:29) and one way among many others we can suffer with him is to jettison in our heart the sins of the flesh which we enjoy and cling unto irrespective of the pain we suffer. If we are guided by the Holy Spirit and we harden our heart and are not responsive to his guide, we will be stuck in our sin.

Repentance is a process that starts from changing our mind to follow God and believing in all he tells us. Our believe or faith gives us the Holy Spirit which illuminates us and through the power of the operation of God quickens our mortal body

But we can see that we are not only baptised with the baptism of the Holy Spirit alone but also with fire (MT3:11) - the latter, to prove ourselves, humble and purify us in the process. Isaiah 48:10 says, "Behold, I have refined you but not with silver, I have chosen you in the furnace of affliction" There is a "proofing" from our own side.

Isn't Jesus speaking to a particular audience , and we read those words that were said to those people ?
Well that is not the way I understand the scripture. What you have said does not apply in all cases. I actually believe that everything in the Scripture applies to me. It is for me to understand the spiritual lesson/treasure that is lined therein.

' applies to me ' , could you elaborate what you mean by that ? For example how would this verse ' apply' to you?
Luke 17 .

14¶And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed.

And this one by Jesus also:

Matthew 10:5

“These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not:”

I agree that every thing in the 66 books is for a Christian to understand . I'm not sure what you mean by ' spiritual lesson ' ?

amen that’s the gospel message the world needs to hear well said eventually because we begin to let his word into our minds and hearts

“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭4:12-13‬ ‭KJV‬‬

we sin because we have son in our hearts in our thoughts and intents , we can forever resist the urge and will in us to lie , but it can’t heal the thing in us that causes us to need to resist who we are to be accepted of God

our issue is this

“For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:

All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭7:21-23‬ ‭KJV‬‬

We sin because we have an issue in our core nature the flaw of good and evil which was not intended for mankind

“I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.

For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:

But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭7:21-23‬ ‭KJV‬‬

This is why as you are saying we need a correction of that conflicted mind and heart we have , a new understanding to embrace in order to put the evil in us to death

“That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭4:22-

The “new man “ who believes the gospel has a renewed knowledge of Gods word

“And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:”
‭‭Colossians‬ ‭3:10‬ ‭KJV‬‬

(back to the image of the creator I show I read that as Man was in the beginning through knowledge of truth. Redeeming the knowledge of sin and death

this renewing of how we think and what we desire and love is required for redemption , because we’re being redeemed from transgression of this which caused death

“And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it:

for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭2:16-17‬ ‭KJV‬‬

the knowledge we shall eat of and live forever is the knowledge of Christ loved !! your post
