For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
(Eph 2:8)

Some say that the word 'gift' is referring only to the word 'saved', others believe it is referring to both words 'saved' and 'faith'.
What is your take?

What makes sense, crossnotes?

Is Paul telling us that being 'saved' is not of ourselves?
Is Paul telling us that our 'grace' is not of ourselves?
Is Paul telling us that our 'faith' is not of ourselves?

Which 'one' logically makes sense, that is, a word that Paul would see the churches possibly misinterpreting the possession of ?

The whole package is a gift!

The grace (unmerited favor) of God causes Him to give faith to believe,
resulting in salvation. :)

If we claim any of it is our work, how do we have NO reason to boast?

A few thoughts.

1. Faith is not a work, Scripture is clear on this in all areas.
2. We can nto take credit for faith, because it is not our work we are placing our faith in.
3. Paul makes a statement, We are not saved by works, but by faith. Saying faith is the gift of God (although it is considering everything we are basing our faith on) would take away from what Paul is saying, Works would not have a counterpoint.
4. Looking at sentence structure. it is by Grace (unmerited favor) we have been saved (past tense. how? by faith or works??
5. The gift.. The gift is shown my what means, it was unearned, meaning it was not a reward for work done (grace) the gift given was salvation (eternal life, adopted as sons, redeemed through the blood, justified freely etc) and the avenue by which it was received. By faith (not works)

in other words, we trusted the gift was worthy of receiving, and we needed it. thus we said yes.. if we did not trust it completely (repent) we would have said no, or tried to work to earn it..

in your signature you state 'without God we have nothing'' so I guess that is your answer.

All a single gift, of course. And notice that clarity of St Paul: and that not of yourselves.

May God bless His people.

True. We are saved by grace. Most certainly, we don't have the power to save ourselves.

True. We have our faith, but it is FROM God, again, not of ourselves.

True, too.

All a single gift, of course. And notice that clarity of St Paul: and that not of yourselves.

The clarity of 'that' refers to a single word. The question is which word does it refer to? Then, armed with that knowledge, one can understand what is not a result of works, that no one should boast. :)
Good to hear from ya again, tribers, I've seen you post a little but not a lot, lately, whereas a year ago you just runneth off your doctrine beliefs like it wasgoing out of style :)

I hope that we keep in mind ,faith is a result of hope. " Substance of things hoped for" Evidence of thing not seen" .The first thing we have when by Gods love and grace we perceive him is hope then as an evidence of our hope we have faith. An evidence to ourselves as much as to those looking on.We have hope in eternal life ,Hope in Gods agape love. the faith makes this hope a living reality to us as if already attained , for God cannot lie. But the greatest is love.
