I think "perfection" refers to the Bible, in the early church period the Bible wasn't complete yet. In Corinthians, Paul does not speak about another gift of tongues, it's the same gift mentioned in Acts, but the Corinthians misused it. Speaking in tongues was speaking in foreign languages (earthly) they previously did not study and it was given to them to reach out to gentiles, was a sign for the unbelievers. Paul does not mention an angelic language either. I won't quote the verses which indicate that the gifts of tongues has ceased coz Baptistrw already posted them.

hmm how does the writing and construction of a book/s (the bible) replace the purpose and function of the Holy Spirit in the church? The early church certainly had a complete set of scripture - the same complete set of Scriptures which Christ and the apostles used. They did not say that they did not need the gifts because they had Scripture. Gifts and bible are not mutually exclusive - a book cannot inspire anyone unless they are spiritually gifted to interpret it. A book cannot encourage the church on its own.

Unfortunately Mahogany I have discovered that there are many "christians" out there who "know" the book but do not personally "know" the God that the book is referring to.

yeah.. and I've also come across some who put two and two together and sincerely declare that because Jesus is the Word, the bible must be Jesus.

"the bible is perfect".. that would depend upon, the translation and/or version, and the language the bible is in. It's no more perfect than the perfection of the people who put pen to paper late at night by candlelight translating ancient languages into English. There's no such thing as a KJV for non-english speaking people either. Still about 200 million christians in Africa without their own bible according to Bible League. One wonders how they get along for encouragement without a bible or without spiritual gifts (since they all supposedly ceased and all ;) ).

yeah the Word of God (or Bible) is perfect indeed, and the early church did not have the full Bible we hold in our hands. Speaking in tongues had a very good purpose, to reach the gentiles, speaking the gospel in their languages. When we look at the speaking in tongues going on today, can't see anything similar to that.

That's because you're most likely never around anyone who actually possesses the gift. Not long ago one our resident ministers went to Romania on a missions trip and was asked to speak a few works. During that time he felt compelled by the Holy Spirit to speak in tongues. After the service he was approached by a young lady who just so happened to be in attendance with a group local messianic Jews. She asked him where he learned to speak Hebrew so eloquently. Imagine her surprise when I pastor responded that he doesn't know Hebrew!

Think about it. In the modern era, where it is not only possible but highly probable that you would have a variety of people who speak a variety of different languages living in the same apartment building, don't you think that the gift is more so relevant now than it was two thousand years ago?

God is not going to force or even give a gift to someone who doesn't even believe in that gift. The gift would only go to waste.

Yes, i was not there, and even if i were i do not speak Hebrew and could not tell if it was genuine or not. But even if i suppose it happened, that still not explain the use of "angelic" tongues in private prayer. I believe there was just one gift, speaking in another language what you previously did not learn.

yea, i don't think you will find any scripture in the bible that says, only Jesus has all of the gifts, thats just not biblical. I have never read anything that says that. God can give gifts and as many as He likes and to whome He chooses. And there is not a verse in the bible that says, you are only allowed to have one gift, you won't find it. However the bible does talk about the gifts of the spirit, and there are many , and God has blessed His servents with these gifts for the edification of the church, and not to abuse them. God has freely given to us. i like this verse.....
Mat 10:8Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead,* cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.

I pray in whatever Gift the Lord has blessed each one of you with, or even more than one gift, that you will go out and glorify God. amen.

sorry olivetree, i didn't express myself well, i mean that there was just 1 kind of speaking in tongues gift (not just 1 gift, of course there are many others), the speaking in tongues mentioned in Acts, i don't believe there is another too, like angelic tongue or whetever. what the apostles did was speaking in real languages they had not learnt before

Yeah the bible never documents whether or not Jesus actually spoke in tongues however, no one really knows what went on all those times Jesus went to be by Himself to pray. Although I would have loved to been there for the transfiguration and saw Christ standing there with Moses and Elijah. Talk about a trip!

Personally, I think everyone has prayed from their Spirit before although they may not actually realized it. Have you had one of those moments when you opened your heart to the lord and nothing could come out but tears? Tears of Joy, Tears of Sadness, Tears of Peace, Tears of Frustration. I think we all have (or at least should have).

Praying in a "heavenly tongue" is very simular however verbalized. It's almost as hard to describe as it is to understand and chances are that if you are at least open to the idea, it may never make sense to you. The thing about speaking in tongues is this...

Do you love and trust God enough to step outside of your comfort zone in a way that allows His Holy Spirit to work through you without "you" getting in the way? It's ok if your answer is "I don't know" because a lot of christians feel the same way...

OOps typo! It should read...

Sorry...

umm it's not about being open or not, i do pray in Spirit of course, my Spirit is not separated when i pray to the Lord, but can't see anything in the Biblel about a special prayer language.
