It likely came from prejudice against people of Irish descent.

In the middle 1800s, tens of thousands of refugees, fleeing the Irish potato famine, flooded the eastern ports of the U.S. Those who were fortunate to survive the Atlantic trek in the 'coffin ships' were the poorest of poor. Many of them gave all they had to bring their families to the shores of the U.S. others contracted as indentured servants to wealthy land owners once they made landfall. They were poor, unskilled farmers and they had the mindset of slaves. And "worst of all", unlike the Scotch-Irish who came to Americas during the colonial time, they were Roman Catholic. Even before the potato famine began, anti-Catholic mobs in the U.S. had torched houses and businesses owned by Roman Catholics. The addition of these Irish immigrants simply added to the hotly-burning racist fire.

Most wealthy, at that time, were Protestant. They owned the businesses, farms, and the newspapers. Therefore, it was easy to foment a psychological campaign against the Irish rabble. All they had to do was to convince the public that they wanted to steal the jobs of "hard-working, God-fearing" people and spread new diseases within the U.S.. Much like the German campaign against the Jews, the Atlantic coast powers that be created all kinds of untruthful, prejudicial ideas to marginalize the Irish immigrants. And, like the Jews could "easily be identified by their big noses", the fiery red hair of the Irish was a tell-tale sign you were being invaded by those pesky mongrels.

Some of us Brits ARE Irish.
I know, you know the series "call the midwife".
Its from after 2nd World war in London. And there is sometimes the theme that people from Irland are not welcome.
So this is an explanation for me. We have also german redheads. And even my wife has a little bit 😀

This thread gave me a good laugh today though.
It makes me wonder if this site is moderated at all, to leave such an absurd thread live.

I've seen him around...he just doesn't play much with us. I don't blame him considering it is us....I mean...Who really would want to play with us? Besides I'd dare say that he has a million other things to do behind the scenes (as I once did) to keep the site up and running smoothly and relatively troll free.

And since this thread is just silliness and fun...it's allowed to stay.

Show the verse. I do not recall having ever read this. Being born with red hair, I think I would have noticed. Until you can show it, I think the thread should be disregarded.
I have not seen it myself, and I do not believe the teacher when she said that. I was seeking clarification on it.

Free speech includes absurdity so there is no need to moderate that. What is even more absurd and nonsensical is what the world leaders are claiming today to rob everyone of their freedoms. They want to ban free speech also. The MSM are censoring those who speak the truth so that the general public will only hear Leftist and Fascist lies.

It's a curious belief that originated in the Middle Ages (or possibly much earlier) where redheads were considered to be incredibly sexual and animalistic and lacking in morals. Many people at the time believed that red hair identified a person as a witch, werewolf or vampyre.
You took the words out of my mouth.

Yes, in Medieval Germany (and I'm sure other places as well), women with red hair were considered to be evil witches. During the Spanish Inquisition, it was believed that red hair was a result of its wielder stealing fires from hell, and so many were branded as witches. I suspect, a lot has to do with the rarity of that colour of hair. It probably dates to a much earlier time in history. It's quite possible that, due to the rarity, in ancient times, the person may have been thought to be "touched by the gods", or given special powers by the gods. When Christianity came along, those "divine powers" were automatically equated with the Devil and the these people branded as witches, sorcerers, etc.

It's a lot older than the 1800's.

Should have added to my post - if you were redheaded AND were left-handed; there was basically no hope for you - you were pretty much considered to be in league with Satan and doomed to hell.
