I'm just gonna break 1 Kings 19 apart and see where this takes me.

1 Kings 19:2 So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, "May the gods deal with me ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of of one of them." I'm not 100% sure on what this means but it was bad enough to send Elijah into the desert.

"Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah he left his servant there, while he himself went a day's journey into the desert. He came to a broom tree and sat down under it and prayed that he might die. "I have had enough Lord," he said. "Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors." 1 Kings 19:3-4 Well if this doesn't say depressed I don't know what does. He is asking God to take his life. I cannot tell you how many times I asked God to do this for me when I was severely depressed.

Then he lay down under the tree and fell asleep. 1 Kings 19:5 Depression can make people very tired and can make it nearly impossible for them to get out of bed.

Now let's look at Gods response. :)

All at once an angel touched him and said, "Get up and eat." He looked around and there by his head was a cake of bread baked over hot coals and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again. 1 Kings 19: 5-6 God makes him a happy meal! :-D Then he lays back down again but what does God do next??

The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said,"Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you." 1 Kings 19:7 God sends his angel a second time!!! He doesn't say, "oh now get over it you're just being lazy!" He encourages him to eat and keep going.

I honestly love Gods attitude towards depression because He understands that "the journey is too much" sometimes. If you read a few verses down you see that Elijah makes it to the mountain and then God reveals himself to him!!! He not only does that but he comforts him by saying, "you're not alone. don't worry I got this."

So those are my thoughts. I posted this because I was at a Christian club at my college and the topic of depression came up and many people said in a very Christian-like manner than the "Godly" thing to do is to get over it. Clearly it is not. God allowed Elijah to rest. He made him a happy meal. People just don't understand.

Very true. people have never understood. if they did, they would not crucify the LORD, the SAVIOR MESSIAH KING, the LAMB OF GOD.

It is also interesting that the root of Elijah's depression was FEAR. After he rests and eats, and has intense moments with God, God sends him out on another assignment to anoint the king of Syria. He didn't let him languish very long - but helped him get right back on his feet and continue his work. God also told him that he was NOT alone and the only one left - he would save others who had not kissed Baal.

I like the part of rest and eat and allow God to speak to us when we feel that we just can't go on any longer. I believe the Lord will always say just what we need to hear.

What's not helping is the fact of Flight 9525's (co?)- pilot has been classified as mentally ill, which could link as to why the plane crash had happened. Not only are people going to think that we're lazy and dumb, they're going to take it that we're a danger to everyone around them to the point standing around us means that their life is at risk. It's funny because a few weeks prior to this, I did a presentation in one of my classes on a brief description of facts on mental illnesses and that only 3% of the population (I think American population) are classified as a threat.

Especially in a time where we're technically advanced and yet superficial as to how we need to have a flawless life as the result, who knows what's going to happen when people ignore the very things that they are just as much under an attack of, and it is not us they should flinch over. God help us all...

people already think like the world.

only the redeemed are able to think truthfully, by grace, and of course anyone else and everyone who God has mercy on also.

the truth about mental illness is not what effects that or any illness causes to people,

but the phrmkea that it is written in God's WORD deceives the whole world(including almost all priests and pastors).

With that level of wisdom and insight you will be needed in ministry.(not that you are not ministering at this time)

Wisdom REQUIRES constant questions. At your young age you have,in spite of our crummy schools, learned this ingrediant.

All depression and opression is rooted in hell. It is an enemy, and it used to eat my lunch big time.
I will never, ever, ever,as long as i live sit up to that table again. It is a slap to God's face and a disgrace to any mature believer. I was personally rebuked by heaven and it got my attention.:)D:(:mad:now for the other 10 million faults;):) )

It just seems that some are melancholy types and easily fall into depression.
Sanguines have a hard time relating, the more they try encouraging them the worse it gets.
We have such great eternal promises but they insist on focusing on the muckety-muck.

This is not meant to be critical of those who easily fall into depression (after all, that would make them more depressed) but rather my own frustration and failure in attempting to encourage them.

as yahweh teaches the truth about all things to those who love him and live according to his purpose,

you may if he permits find out that all society messes up in their thinking about mental illness - just as all society messes up in everything they think about,
just as , for example, it is written(in ephesians, GOD'S WORD)
that
even
born again believers once did the same thing.

a far far greater evil also is perpetrated by phrmkea. as it is written in revelation (GOD'S WORD) that phrmkea deceives the whole world in these days we live in.

even 'God's people' are horrendously and terribly and seriously and daily hurt and lives destroyed by "lack of knowledge" (firsthand truth, experiential knowledge in yahweh by grace in yahshua)
of the truth,

which is slowly restored, or even perhaps suddenly, when yahweh permits and reveals to his people.

Not sure if I'm following you... please explain?

Depression is satan's way of tearing one down. It leaves one very vulnerable to his attacks. The signs of depression are isolation, fear, insecurity and untrustworthy of others. These are not what GOD desires for us. Depression will cause many yokes and strongholds. Depression traps the soul mentally and spiritually. It damages self worth and can and will lead to suicide if it is not handle in a Godly way.

GOD has given us many things to help prevent depression.

To prevent depression: One must continuously focus on GOD and adhere to HOLY SPIRIT. This will not stop satan from attempting but it will make it impossible for him to be successful in his attempts.

Christians do not get depressed! Many will disagree but this is very true. Christians will be tried, deal with hardships, trials and tribulations but GOD will Always see us through. Always! GOD says HE will Keep us in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on HIM.

Elijah did not deal with depression it was fear the only one who is mentioned to have depression is Saul because of his sin GOD had taken away HIS SPIRIT from him.

1Sa 16:14 But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.

Blessings!!!!!!!

Rest and eat, eat and rest. Sounds like manna from heaven when God installed to Israel the first Sabbath observance. Exodus chapter 16. OH!! How wonderful He is. This is an excellent thread. Real life in the real world with a real Savior!

the kingdom of yahweh is not meat and drink, but righteousness , peace and joy (much more fully explained all through scripture).

i.e. these are gifts part and parcel with yahshua in salvation . not given separate from him, but with him and at the same time.

Despite comments to the contrary you have nailed this passage. It was not about fear it was about depression.

Many in the body never get what this passage is saying and you did! This will preach to your generation. Continue letting the Holy Spirit guide and lead you!

Amen Sis,
God does not beat us up, He lifts us up! Sometimes we need a little while to get over things. We are not robots.
