1 God presides in the great assembly;
he renders judgment among the “gods”:

2 “How long will you defend the unjust
and show partiality to the wicked?

3
Defend the weak and the fatherless;

uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed.

4
Rescue the weak and the needy;

deliver them from the hand of the wicked.

5 “The ‘gods’ know nothing, they understand nothing.
They walk about in darkness;
all the foundations of the earth are shaken.

6 “I said, ‘You are “gods”;
you are all sons of the Most High.’

7
But you will die like mere mortals;

you will fall like every other ruler.”

8 Rise up, O God, judge the earth,
for all the nations are your inheritance.

it's the same word used in verses 1 & 5 as well. it's clearly not being used in a possessive sense, and the Hebrew word isn't a possessive word. it's in the English that a possessive and plural word both have the same form.

not that we don't belong to God, but i don't think that's what's at the heart of what Christ was saying in reply to the Pharisees. all things are His!

Crossnote made a good note there below, its likely can be translated rulers or judges .

That makes more sense to me, then making this into a idea, an thought some people like to entertain, that they are little gods.

I have a question. Let us just say God takes your soul and spirit out of your body, and He puts HIS SPIRIT AND SOUL in your flesh. Are you Jesus (as man) or not?

Or let us look at it the other way around.... Jesus was God in the flesh, right! So what made that flesh they hung on the cross Jesus? Was it not that the Man they called Jesus displayed His Father's soul and Spirit? Yes it was. If God is in flesh the result is Jesus. So whenever God takes his glory and fits it into flesh the result is a Man like Jesus.

Let us say God now gives me that glory that Jesus had, will I have the fulness of the Spirit and the soul of GOD IN ME? What am I then? Am I still human man, or am I a NEW creature... a HEVENLY creature, as GODLY as Jesus was?

Please try to understand this.... YOU ARE NOT THE NEW CREATURE.... The FULNESS of the Holy Spirit is in you, and the FULNESS of the GLORY Jesus had as MAN in in you.... What are you then? You are the SON OF GOD. NOT GOD, THE SON of God.

Was Jesus less GOD as the SON OF GOD? YES!!!! The full glory of God CANNOT fit into a human body. But the human body FILLED WITH GOD'S GLORY, His Spirit and HIS soul is as Godly as a human body can get.... I am sure that every person God gives His Spirit too, is ONE WITH GOD, and as GODLY MAN AS JESUS CHRSIT IN FELSH...

Continued ....
Your made new, in the sense our sins are forgiven. But we still have our own soul. It never leaves your body as a result of ;becoming a Christian. Christ dwells in us. But we are still just men compared to God. And having a mind set that we are equal as gods with Him, is the wrong way to go about it; scriptures wont lead in that direction. This is a problem with the way it was translated here into English from Hebrew..... From not carefully reading that scripture and rushing to conclusions, there are people that actually believe they are a god, and call themselves that.

Yes brother... God is God.. He created us.. We went to Satan kingdom...
In John 8th chapter Jesus said.. ye are the children of Satan..
Joh 8:42 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.
Joh 8:43 Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.
Joh 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

BY DOING THE WILL OF SATAN WE ARE BECOME AS CHILDREN OF SATAN...

BUT GOD MADE US AS HIS CHILDREN..
Joh 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
PLEASE NOTE THE MESSAGE FROM GOD

WE ARE CHILDREN OF GOD..
A KING HAVE THE CHILDREN.. THIS CHILDREN CAN BECOME AS KINGS IN CERTAIN WAY OR IN CERTAIN TIME
WE ARE CALLED TO RULE THE WORLD..

Gen 1:28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

Gen 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

Dear brother.. we are created to rule the world but sin made us as slaves
God is given all authority and ruling through His redemption in the name of Jesus
we are spiritually high people, ruling people.. royal priesthood, chosen generation..

It is also written in Psalms too..
Psa 82:1 A Psalm of Asaph. God standeth in the congregation of the mighty; he judgeth among the gods.
Psa 82:2 How long will ye judge unjustly, and accept the persons of the wicked? Selah.
Psa 82:3 Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy.
Psa 82:4 Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of the hand of the wicked.
Psa 82:5 They know not, neither will they understand; they walk on in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are out of course.
Psa 82:6 I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High.
Psa 82:7 But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes.
Psa 82:8 Arise, O God, judge the earth: for thou shalt inherit all nations.

Let us stand for our placement.. as children of God
but we are living in flesh and with the matters of flesh and earth we are failing to conquer (rule) the world..
but every true christian is going to have the glory like God with some throne.. on one day..
God bless you

maybe because we hate polytheism we're just having a hard time making sense of what the term 'gods/rulers/judges' means. a lot of times in reading the scripture i wonder about how different the cultural connotations of words are to me than they were to the people that first heard it.

all the same i don't like 'the message' rendering of the Word much. it replaces the word with "judges" through the whole Psalm, except for v. 8, though it's the same word in a different tense, and it's not
the same Hebrew word in Judges 2:16
" Then the Lord raised up judges
"
so i think just replacing the word with "judge" misses some of the richness of the meaning, and doesn't make sense in the context of the NT references.

We can't spiritualize every scripture away. Because it dose not really allow for carefully reading and study of that Bible. . We have to look at these things carefully and consider everything when we study, like the fact, this was translated from Hebrew, a different language then English, which the People concerned for these scriptures did not speak or write in.

As hard as this may be for people to grasp, there are errors in the way some things were translated from those manuscripts into the English Bible. There are mistakes. And even the KJ translators said this. That is why we have to study.

The Soul is the heart of a man the inner person, and the spirit is the life of God in the man that gives the inner man life. But the HOLY SPIRIT is the GODLY life God ca ngive an inner man. And the inner man can still rebel against it... That is what sin is... when the inner man and the spirit god gave the innerman, fights God's Spirit that wants the inner man (soul) and spirit (man spirit) to repent and be washed.... God's Spirit will always show the inner man, soul and spirit to repent when he makes the dlesh sin.

But when the spirit and the soul does NOT REBEL against the Holoy Spirit, God has put a NEW HEART (soul) and a NEW SPIRIT (His Holy Ghost) in that flesh, and see there..... God saved another man.

I magine God remove our sinning, hard stony heart and replace it with one from heaven that CANNOT sin. And then he comes and replace our sinning spirit, with HIS HOLY SPIRIT.... WOW! Imagine God giving us a heart that cannot sin, or even think sin, and His Holy Spirit in our bodies.... Wow a PURE HEART and a HOLY SPIRIT in one man.... PERFECT IS ON THE CARDS...

Will God do this? Eze 36...

A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.
Eze 36:27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.

I'm going to respond one last time here. This is what I believe is the proper way to render this ,

Psalms 82:6 "I have said, Ye are gods; And all of you are children of the MOST HIGH."

"" I have said, ye are God's children; and all of you are the children of the MOST HIGH.""

This has nothing to do with humans being gods, but it shows ownership by God of all of his children ..

People like to elevate themselves to a false position, and even religions have been formed over this verse.

gods (small case)
in the manner of being given power and authority under the Most High God(capitol)
Yes like judges

Psalm 82:1+2
God presides in the great assembly;he renders[supply, furnish provide or give] judgment among the “gods”
How long will you defend the unjust and show partiality to the wicked?

They were using their power and authority improperly and unjustly without Gods guidance and were defending the unrighteous or those who try to justify sin instead of the righteous.
With the jews doing the same against Christ in John 10 hence the reference Christ used.

It's good to look at what was said precluding the reference to those termed "gods"
13
“If my people would only listen to me,
if Israel would only follow my ways,14how quickly I would subdue their enemiesand turn my hand against their foes!15Those who hate the Lord would cringe before him,and their punishment would last forever.16But you would be fed with the finest of wheat;with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.

Its good to also make note how God always gives chance to consider ones action as a means for repentance and atonement to correct themselves before the Lord and make up for what one does
But when not This was stated after them not doing so in Psalm 82:7
But you will die like mere mortals;you will fall like every other ruler

Goes well with pride goes before destruction...yes elevating oneself as if equal or worse..even higher than God thinking one does not have to listen or be led by or obey God in all they do.
