So I'm wanting to start doing a deeper Bible study.
Right now I've just been studying random topics. But now I really wanna start studying different books.
The problem i have is..I'm not sure where to start or how to really study the books. I've never had anyone teach me or even talk to me about it.
I was hoping some of you could share ways you study. Tips and tools you may have or have come across.
Maybe your own opinions on what books to start with.

Thank you for your help :)

Oh and I tried to see if anyone already started this topic but I'm useing my phone and I can't really see every topic so if it has already been asked I'm sorry :(

There are many approaches.
Just off hand take a book, say Romans, then prayerfully read it about 10 times. Each time you'll find more and more open up; the Holy Spirit opens our understanding in His Word.

Don't worry about it Pres19, can we use this thread for random discussions? We don't want to waste a thread right? :p

What I would say also is:

If we expect to understand more and more of the Bible - whatever method we use - we must do so prayerfully and forsake all known sin.

Otherwise the Holy Spirit is unlikely to lead us in a knowledge of the Lord Jesus by His grace, if we continually defy His holy ways.

After all, the Lord Jesus came into the world to deliver His people from the penalty and power of sin. John's First Epistle says: 'Let us love not in word, nor in tongue, but in deed and in truth'.

Lol I don't see why not... as long as it helps others on their studies :)
Even if people just wanna ask random questions about a verse or two would be good.

Pres19,

you can start out your study of the Bible in the book of John. And study the very words which Jesus spoke while on this Earth. Then after studying the Gospel of John, go on the remaining three Gospel accounts (Matthew, Mark and Luke).

Then from there; you could start doing different topical studies in the Bible such as the following:

- The Love of God.

See what the Holy Bible says about God's love.

- The Mercy of God

- The Judgment of God

- The Fear of God

And so forth. These are just to give you some ideas.

Also, there is a software that can really help with your Bible studies. It helps me a lot. It is a Bible Search Software that let's you type any word or phrase in it and it shows you exactly how many times that word or phrase appears in the Holy Scriptures. For example; the phrase: 'love of God' appears exactly 13 times in the Holy Scriptures.

And here are the thirteen places in the Scriptures in which this precious phrase appears:

*Luke 11:42

*John 5:42

*Romans 5:5

*Romans 8:39

*2 Corinthians 13:14

*2 Thessalonians 3:5

*Titus 3:4

*1 John 2:5

*1 John 3:16

*1 John 3:17

*1 John 4:9

*1 John 5:3

*Jude 1:21

So if you do a study on the love of God. You can look up each of those Scriptural passages and read them. Then read and study also the context of each of those verses by reading the surrounding verses of each Scriptural passage.

This Bible Software is called the King James Pure Bible Search and here is the link for it:

King James Pure Bible Search

It is absolutely free. So I definitely recommend that you look into it and download the software. It is a great study aid. And as a student of the Scriptures, I use this software a lot.

Pray then read, after you read pray again and remember that you reading is not a work that God will accept. Faith in in the cross spurs bible reading and not the opposite. However, reading can lead to faith in the cross as faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God. So keep reading. Its like a seed sowed it grows. If you don't understand something read it anyway. I find Leviticus a tough read and the ones about the "begat's" but there are little nuggets tucked away in there, so read on.

Keeping it simple is best. Take a notebook write down what you read in reference to the chapter. All that you understand fine. Any question you have write it down. Ask a mature Christian that you trust for some insight. Then compre that to what you read. If no clarity then seek more assistance. reading and trying to ubderstand the bible without guidance opens the door to lots of stuff use caution be smart and ask Just like you are doing. If i can help I will.Remember always pray before you read and have no interuptions as the Holy Spirt may want to reveal something to you.

Ya know, sometimes I just sit down on my bed and pray, "God, what should I read tonight?" And then a book and verse pops into my head and I start reading from there.

I have gotten some huge answers from doing this and God will sometimes even repeat the same book and chapter for me to read, because my thick skull didnt get it the first time. :D Or he shows me something new about the chapter and verse!

I have some suggestions for going deeper into bible study. Gordon Fee wrote a book on it that is excellent he titled "How to Read the Bible for All it's Worth". It is in a PDF file for free on the net. It is excellent, and anyone learning from Fee will have a tool for clearer understanding of what we are meant to know from scripture.

Something else to keep in mind is that God has opened up another tool for a deeper understanding of his word when God opened the deep sea scrolls to us. They were hidden in plain site in open caves for thousands of years. Now, with so much time separating us from the culture and ways of the ancient people the bible uses to give us spiritual truth we have a hard time learning from the older sections of the bible. For instance the bible speaks of salt and of covenants in terms of the understanding of the people of the times. When we know what it meant to the people of the time, we can better understand God's meaning for us today.

It has taken years for scholars to dig through information that has turned up. Most of those scholars are now teaching in very expensive colleges, but it is possible to check for authors who have this background. I found one on the net for free at a site called torahclass.

These ideas are for the bible student who has studied bible awhile, but wants to dig deeper and immerse themselves deeper in all God has for them to know about the wonders of His spiritual world.

You need to keep in mind that these ideas are only ways to better hear scripture, it is God's word not any man's interpretation of that word that gives us spiritual understanding. When we read anything any man has to say, it has to be carefully watched to be sure they are not man's opinion. Commentaries are helpful, but only when they explain, not when they give opinions.
