Can you tell all the stories in the Bible? Can you quote important Scriptures? Do you know where to find the Scriptures you are looking for? Most if not everyone cannot say yes to these questions. The conclusion is that we all need to read our Bibles. Do you know what different translations say? There is only one way to find out, read it. We all should study and read the Bible. I come from a group of Christians who do not own televisions and we are known for reading the Bible and Bible study. Some say we are like Protestant monks. But whither or not you own a television, (which is not a sin), you need to make time for the Bible. You could be a Bible expert! You could be a great light in the kingdom. You could be a Bible reference tool to someone else. Don't sale yourself short. You can do it.

I could tell you most of the stories, and often point you to the right book and chapter if you quoted something at me, but I'm often at a loss to give a specific verse.

But I think that's just the way I remember things.

personally I love the way the pages of the bible dance to life before you very eyes and resound within your soul the importance of the words. What I find to be so totally cool is you can read the same verse and each time it does something different inside of you which lets you know how very alive our bible from our King & God truly is. I look at it as our security line that leads straight to heaven. The devil is very very good at attempting to lead one away from reading the bible so be alert to his tricks and lies and when that thought pops into your mind that you will read it later....do it then.

this is something that is very undervalued in the Church today. way to many Christians do not read or know the Bible near enough as they should. i mean the whole Bible, not just the same verses over and over.

I think I know my bible fairly well but I'm not good at remembering verses verbatim, I usually have to paraphrase them and I'm also not good at remembering chapter and verse numbers of a particular verse.

While I agree that knowing the bible is important, I feel like pointing out this:

A person can know the bible by heart without being saved. It is not the book that brings salvation, but the blood of Christ.
And it is following Him, in mind, heart and deeds that show you are a Christian, not the nr of verses you know.

That being said, you will of course be better equipped if you know the word of God.

knowing the Bible also helps to guard against false teaching. if more people know the Bible, there would be fewer false teachers.

Yes, one can recite a poem without understanding the poem itself.

I know what is needed to be known

Yet one can read the Bible over and over and will always come across something you forgot or did not notice before.

Couple of things.... One the Word of God (our Bible) is the Truth, John 17:17. And did Jesus not say thou shall know the truth and the Truth shall make thee free! Wow! Looks like the knowledge in the Bible shall make us free. Free from all evil!
In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God and the Word becam Man and lived amongst us... And the Word of God multiplied and the Word was spoken with boldness.... The Bible is very important to all who wants to see and know God!

I should have been more spacific, as it sounded like one isnt called to read the whole bible.
I have and all should read the whole bible, and the understanding, knowladge is given in Jesus by the Holy Spirit.
As Jesus said, I will send the Holy Spirit to remind you of all I taught you.
For reading the whole bible is not a chore, but Gods gift to us, and His love spoken.

God bless

I think we can be very familiar with one part of the bible without knowing the whole so we become misled. I was like that. I knew the NT almost by heart. Then I found someone who could open up understanding of the OT with all the principles of God and the foundations for our NT. He showed would show me how the NT said the same thing, and how it told of how the NT would unfold.

I was past 80 years old when that happened. It was as if I had seen the world through a limited window and then a complete God was shown me. I could see the plan of salvation God has for all our ages. Sometimes I cried. I was bewildered and wondered how it all fit together. It took months to find every verse about law, and how it fit with grace and faith for instance and how Christ and Pentecost fit in. But the peace, joy, and completeness it has brought is priceless.

It is written:
Ps.19

[1] The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.
[2] Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.
[3] There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.
[4] Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun,
[5] Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race.
[6] His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.
[7] The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.
[8] The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.
[9] The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.
[10] More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.
[11] Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.
[12] Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults.
[13] Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.
[14] Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.

I concur with this sentiments. No one can know the Bible enough because it is God speaking to us, which is never ending. It's about us trusting in the Lord for all and everything that we can have problems with.
