something we should pray that God places in our hearts.

Proverbs 15:33
The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom, And before honor is humility

Zephaniah 2:3
Seek the LORD, all you meek of the earth, Who have upheld His justice. Seek righteousness, seek humility. It may be that you will be hidden In the day of the LORD’s anger.

1 Peter 5:5
[ Submit to God, Resist the Devil ] Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “ God resists the proud,But gives grace to the humble.”

hey I found this parable it tells us the difference between a righteous prayer of a humble person and a self righteous prayer of a prideful person....

Luke 18
The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector

9 Also He spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.’ 13 And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

I think the one recognizes that he is a sinner in need of God's mercy and grace, while the other thinks he is better then others. therefore to be humble is to truly understand your sinful nature and transgressions and ask God for forgiveness and help to live holy lives for His glory.

Joh 13:13 "You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and rightly so, for that is what I am.
Joh 13:14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet.
Joh 13:15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.

have washed your feet, ye also ought to wash one another's feet: by which he does not mean barely, that they should perform this single action; but as this was an instance of humility and condescension, and doing a good office to strangers and travellers, and was afterwards an expression of love to the saints, see 1Ti_5:10, so he would teach them hereby, to behave in a spirit of humility and condescension to one another, to do every kind and good office, and by love to serve one another in all things.

1Ti 5:9 No widow may be put on the list of widows unless she is over sixty, has been faithful to her husband,
1Ti 5:10 and is well known for her good deeds, such as bringing up children, showing hospitality, washing the feet of the saints, helping those in trouble and devoting herself to all kinds of good deeds.

If she have washed the saints' feet; which was usual in those hot countries, where they wore sandals only, partly for refreshment, and partly for the removal of dust and filth, contracted in walking; instances of this we have in several places of Scripture, Gen_18:4. It was such a common piece of civility, that our Lord complains of the neglect of it towards him, Luk_7:44. It was what he did to his own disciples, and in so doing set them an example of what they should do to one another, Joh_13:14 and being a mean and low office, and which very likely was done by the servants of the house; the sense may be, if she has condescended to do the meanest office for the saints.

I think this spells it out pretty well.

while we strive for excellence in all that we do, we do it in the manner of a servant, thinking only of others, not of ourselves.

I am not sure about NEVER thinking of our selves, but rather as regarding our selves as servants of Him.

What is true humility?
Humility is the place that we go in the quietness of our heart and say to God, 'You are right', 'You are awesome' and 'All things are of you and without you we are nothing'. In that place of humility we acknowledge all that God has said and all He has demonstrated and we agree with Him. When we humble ourselves in this manner, He gives us grace and lifts us up and exalts us in due time (1Pt 5:5,6, Jm 4:10). (and that is a promise from God)

true humility includes realizing that we need to repent and reach for a better way through Jesus. It is pride to think we are on the right track while without Jesus or that Jesus is just a Lord who accepts us as we are even when we can improve. So there is always room for improvement.

well ok, fair enough :) we do enjoy catoring to our physical needs, but that's not what I meant ;) For instance, if I'm a concert pianist I am not the only one that benefits from the music I play, but I enjoy it even more when I see others enjoying it. Rather than take pride in my accomplishment I enjoy what it accomplishes for others... get it?

Bowing to God. Knowing our place. We are servants of God. We are his body and he is our head. I don't want to run things. I want to be lead by my God. Being used by God to help others. It's not about me it has to be about God. Giving the glory to God all the time.

That is a good definition as well!

Others
Lord, help me to live from day to day
In such a self forgetful way
That even when I kneel to pray
My prayer shall be for others.

Help me in all the work I do
To ever be sincere and true
And know that all I’ll do for you
Must needs be done for others.

Let self be crucified and slain
And buried deep – and all in vain
May efforts be to rise again
Unless to live for others.

And when my work on Earth is done
And my new work in Heaven begun
May I forget the crown I’ve won
While thinking still of others.

Others, Lord, others
Let this my motto be.
Help me to live for others,
That I may live like Thee.

I heard a good explaination once. It said that humilty is thinking of ourselves and our accomplishments like anyone else would. For example, say i were to create a magnificent work of art. Many people like it and take delight in it. It would be right for me to do so as well. But once i think more of it because it was made by me, then it crosses the line into pride. This also explains our pride (not the sinful kind) we feel at our family members or friends successes.
