I find it very sad when Christians put their opinions over scripture. Some examples.

Jonah hated what god did and never repented of it.

You hurled me into the depths,
into the very heart of the seas,
and the currents swirled about me;
all your waves and breakers
swept over me.
4 I said, ‘I have been banished
from your sight;
yet I will look again
toward your holy temple.’
5 The engulfing waters threatened me,[b]
the deep surrounded me;
seaweed was wrapped around my head.
6 To the roots of the mountains I sank down;
the earth beneath barred me in forever.
But you, Lord my God,
brought my life up from the pit.

7 “When my life was ebbing away,
I remembered you, Lord,
and my prayer rose to you,
to your holy temple.

8
“Those who cling to worthless idols
turn away from God’s love for them.
9 But I, with shouts of grateful praise,
will sacrifice to you.

What I have vowed I will make good.
I will say, ‘Salvation comes from the Lord.’”
10 And the Lord commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.

yes, he did what god asked him to do, but he never repented of hating it.

Read Jonah's reaction to what god did. He hated it.

Rob Bell is a prime example of having knowledge of scripture but making ALL THE WRONG CONCLUSIONS FROM IT.

God never required no sex before marriage?? It was their culture because they followed God's precepts.
"“Suppose a man has intercourse with a young woman who is a virgin but is not engaged to be married. If they are discovered, he must pay her father fifty pieces of silver. Then he must marry the young woman because he violated her, and he may never divorce her as long as he lives. " Deut. 22:28.....seems like here they were given a pass.

Jonah never repented of his anger over what god did. He spoke that truth about god, but that's not repenting.

You apparently didn’t read Jonah 4:12

And the next day before dusk, Jonah said God …now I understand Lord, my pride got in the way…. what will you have to do next.

That’s right, it’s not there …. anymore than “he never repented.”

Neither you nor I can make up what happened the next day, days, or years afterwards …that called private interpretation. ….we don’t know … so we leave it at that.

When we start reading into the Word of God …we then become a religion.

2 Timothy 4:
For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths

So many times Christians think god will lead them to their spouse. There is nothing in the bible to support this. In fact god makes it clear you decide who you marry.

"This is what the LORD commands for Zelophehad’s daughters: They may marry anyone they please as long as they marry within their father’s tribal clan" Numbers 36:6

A wife is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to be married to whom she wishes, only in the Lord. 1 Corinthians 7:39
Well, you just took two commands the Lord gave for specific groups and universalized them. So, I wouldn't say God "makes it clear" at all based on what you posted here.

Show me any command god makes matching couples. Both verses makes it clear, you choose who you marry.

His actions show he never repented, he was angry to the end.

Show me where it says that God won't help you find a spouse if you ask!

Actually, it makes very clear that the daughters of Zelophehad chose who to marry... within their father's tribal clan. And that widows were free to marry in the Lord.

In that case we should ignore the 10 commandments, since god was speaking to the Hebrews and not us.

I do find it interesting god picked jonah for this mission. He did for a reason. He needed someone so stubborn he would fit the example Jesus would tell. As Jonah was 3 days and 3 night in the belly of the fish. Anyone else would not have fit the story. Jonah's rebellion has a purpose.

Being pure before marriage means not doing anything sexual. I agree kissing (no tongue), hugging, and holding hands are not sexual. This expectation of not even hugging, handing hands, kissing, etc. may actually be the result of patriarchy. Guys ideally want to be girl's first in everything, and that includes kissing, hugging, hand holding etc. They are the ones who actually set the bar high, and women had to follow this (and even now in some circles) if they want to be marriageable. It is not the other way around - the desire to the guy's first is not as strong or even nonexistent.
I know some people look at kissing, holding hands, and hugging, as innocent, but it is not to be done for there should be no contact for they should not be intimate in any way.

And boyfriend and girlfriend as saying they are a couple is wrong for it should not be but only married.

Did God say you can steal a small item but do not steal a big item.

You can call someone an idiot but do not call them a fool.

You cannot kiss and say it is alright but not fornicate because kissing is intimate with another person, and should only be reserved for marriage.

I see some parents kiss their children on the lips but I do not think it is right for that should only be for spouses.

Kissing, holding hands, and hugging, does not make any sense in this way that they would be considered temptations that could lead to doing more.

That reason alone would mean you cannot do those things.

Jesus said do not even lust after a woman in your heart for it is the same thing as doing the act.

IDK about "ignore" but I certainly wouldn't try to establish doctrine using only the ten commandments.

Excellent post.

Your post of scripture here wraps up the whole discussion.
It shows Jonah turning back to God (which is what repentance means),
and it shows God accepting his change of heart by removing him from the fish,
and sending him back to finish his ministry.

There is just nothing left to argue with; the scripture here is very clear.

However, as some have mentioned, there are those that have difficulty understanding simple scripture.
I think there are a number of possible causes.
I don't know JohnB well enough to offer a particular explanation.

I think it's good he's here, and that he wants to discuss scripture.
I'm all for that.
