2 Samuel 5

All the tribes of Israel make a covenant with David at Hebron then they anoint David as king of Israel. David is 30 years old and he reigns for 40 years. Both david and Solomon reigned for 40 years and Saul 20 years. David gets many wives and concubines. David fight twice against the Philistines and wins.

David follows the Ark with 30,000 men. Once a man touch the Ark and God kills him but David gets angry at God for killing the man. And he is afraid of God and he doesn’t want to bring the Ark in his city but finally he decides to bring the Ark in his city. And David celebrates the Ark and gives food to all the people. Michal is jealous because David uncovers while dancing in front of the slave girls of his servants but David justifies himself saying that he celebrates God for choosing him as king of Israel. And Michal doesn’t have children till her death.

The prophet Nathan tells David that God will secure his throne and his descendants will keep reigning. And David thanks God for blessing him.

David defeats the Philistines and the Moabites and Hadadezer of Zobad and the Syrians who come to help Hadadezer and the Edomites and he is always victorious. Joab is his military chief.

Because of Jonathan, David asks if there is anyone left of the house of Saul. There is Mephibosheth, Jonathan’s son and he is crippled. David tells him he will take care of him because of his father. And he tells Ziba a servant of the house of Saul to cultivate Saul’s land for Mephibosheth but Mephiboseth will always dine at David’s table.

2 Samuel 10

When the king of the Ammonites dies, David sends some of his servants to comfort him because he was good to David. But the princes of the Ammonites think it is to spy them so they humiliate David’s servants. And they get men to fight against David. And David wins. But the Syrians regroup again against David. And David wins again. So the Ammonites make peace with Israel and the syrians are afraid of helping the Ammonites again.

David sends Joab and his army against the Ammonites and they bes_ege Rabbah. One night, David sees Bathesheba bathing and he lays down with her and she becomes pregnant. David asks her husband to come back from the army and rest. But he doesn’t want because israel is in war. AS he refuses to go to his hoiuse, David asks his military chief to send him in the front lines where he can be killed and he dies. After the mourning, Bathsheba becomes David’s wife.

God sends Nathan to David. He tells David a story of a rich man who has many sheep and cattle. But when a visitor comes, he takes the small female lamb of the poor man who has nothing else. And David becomes angry against the rich man and says he should die. Then Nathan tells him that he is the rich man and he adds that God gave him many things and he was willing to give him a lot more. Because of what he did, God is going to bring many troubles in David’s house and in broad daylight, not in secret as David did. God isn’t going to die but he will lose Bathsheba’s son. After that Bathsheba gets Solomon.

Thus David wasn’t long before abusing from his power in front of God. God had given him a lot and that’s how he thanks him. Once again, we may see the difference with a man like Job who kept faithful. Once again, we see how power is pervasive and destructive. History is full of such examples and the Bible is also full of such examples. How different he was before being king and then he acted as if he had forgotten everything, as if he was somebody else. And it’s always the same with the people who think they are important. They never learn. That’s why we are where we are: men dig their own pit!

Amnon, David’s son, falls in love with his sister Tamar. His companion Jehonadab tells him to pretend to be sick and ask for Tamar to come and bring him some food. And he rapes her. And Absalom wits two years, he asks David to send his brother to him. And when Amnon is drunk, he tells his servants to kill him. And Absalom flees. After three years David longs to go to Absalom.

Joab tells a woman to tell the story of his two sons, one who killed the other and the fact she was mourning. In fact, it was about Absalom. And finally, David accepts Absalom to come back to Jerusalem but he doesn’t want to see him. It lasts two years and Absalom asks Joab to speak to the king for him. But Joab doesn’t wan’t. Finally, Absalom provokes the encounter and Joab accepts to speak to the king and at the end David accepts to see Absalom again.

Absalom enters Jerusalem. David tells his counselor Hushai to go to Absalom to counsel him and act in favor of David.

Absalom wants to send men to look for David but Hushai tells him not to do it because the men who are with David are mighty. Thus he must first gather all Israel and then go and look for David. And Ushai sends someone to tell David to flee.

David’s men win against Absalom’s men. And Joab with his servants kill David’s son, Absalom against David’s will.

David mourns his son Absalom and the people don’t celebrate their victory. Joab tells David that his isn’t acting well by mourning those who hated him. And if he doesn’t change his attitude everybody will leave him. Finally all the men of Judah come to David and they go back to Jerusalem.

Sheba tries to get all the men of Israel and get away from David. So David sends his men after him. And Joab besieges the city where Sheba has fled. But the people of the city kill Sheba and then Joab leaves the city.

There is a famine during three days in the days of David because of what the house of Saul did to the Gibeonites. In fact, he put them to death. So David asks what the Gibeonites want in exchange of their blessing. They asks for seven of Saul sons and kill them. But David doesn’t want to give Mephibosheth. And David burns the bones of Saul and Jonathan. Then God listens to David. Then there is a war between the Philistines and Israel but david becomes exhausted. And a Philistine tries to kill David but he is saved. Then his men tell him not to go anymore in the battlefield. There are more wars between the Philistines and Israel.
