Why did God himself prescribe making images of cherabim with wings to put on the ark of the covenant? Is it not true that in God's own religion, which is the true religion he can approve of the making of images:

God said:

18 And make two cherubim out of hammered gold at the ends of the cover.
19 Make one cherub on one end and the second cherub on the other; make the cherubim of one piece with the cover, at the two ends. 20 The cherubim are to have their wings spread upwards, overshadowing the cover with them. The cherubim are to face each other, looking towards the cover. (Exodus 25)

God thus said:

Deuteronomy 27:15
Cursed is the man who carves an image or casts an idol— a thing detestable to the LORD, the work of the craftsman's hands— and sets it up in secret. Then all the people shall say,Amen!

God's war is therefore against foreign religions not against his approved workmanship at his command and through his spirit.

Amen. Icons of Christ, the Theotokos, and of all the Saints of the Church, are part of valid Church tradition. Statues (three dimensional) images are forbidden. This has always been the tradition of the true church. Carved statues are wrong.
We should make a spiritual image, not an exact replica of Christ in three -dimensional form. That is going too far with imagery, and is not a permissible analogy to OT tradition.
Christ alone is the Incarnation of God. We should not try to reproduce in statues an incarnate-like image of Christ. Two dimensional images avoid idolatry; 3 dimensions tends toward idolatry.

Those verses about the cherubim facing each other made me think of this verse 2Corinthians 3:18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

I wonder if we are supposed to learn a spiritual lesson from those verses. Maybe what we behold is what we turn into. What are you filling your mind with?

The verse doesnt say heavenly things. It says to not make any images or worship any images OF GOD.

We are asked to have no idols.
But an idol can be anything.
I have a cross on my wall to remind me to keep always Jesus in my heart , mind and actions.
Also to witness to Jesus to all that enter our home.
But it is simply that, a visual reminder.
As to the charubim, this is God's request, not a desire of self.
Also during a time of sacrifice as well.
I will follow what is commanded by God on this. :)

God bless.
