Is it lucrative to pray for someone else if you're a mess? Do we somehow lose the "power" in prayer for others if we are in a slump ourselves?

Is there a process we should go through to make prayer more effective?

I'm completely serious, because I sometimes feel like a hypocrite praying for others. Any biblical examples and verses would be appreciated.

I always reffered that verse as to telling a person a fault, prayer I believe is a little more complex since its humble requests to God for others. I would love to hear your reasoning. I'm not doubting you I'd just like a little more insight.

Well, doesn't it say at one point that God marveled that there was no intercessor?

Dredd,

We are told to bear one another's burdens. To me that means that I am to help in any way I can especially by praying. If I know a person is hurting and I don't even pray for them, then I am as bad as a non-believer and worthless to God. So I guess my answer would be yes, you should pray for others even when you are in the pits yourself.

In Christ,
John

I honestly have no biblical basis for what I am about to say, it is just from my heart.

Prayer is prayer. Whether you feel spiritually strong or spiritually weak, God hears the cries of His children.

I believe that when we take our eyes off our own circumstance and put the focus on others, our own "mess" will seem so much less significant. And I believe we can receive strength ourselves by ministering to others in prayer. Many people fail to pray as fervently and regularly when they find themselves in a slump, so what better way to reconnect with God than to bring others before Him?

Why can you not pray simultaneously for yourself and for others who may be experiencing difficulty? I pray everyday for my own understanding and spiritual growth, and for the strength to face my own struggles, but I also have a notebook where I have started writing names of some people who I know are going through things, and I bring them before the Lord as well. And I have to say, I feel more blessed praying for others than I do for myself.

And believe me... I am a mess! :)

The woman who fed Elijah. she did not have enough even for herself, but when she fed Elijah, she fed herself. This is an example of how ministering to others, even when you do not have "enough" for your self, is not only Biblical but practical.

I have always believed that all prayer honors and praises God Our Father.
As I pray for others I see the power of Our Lord God just shine out everywhere.
I did read scripture that said the prayer of the rightous is powerful and affective.
I like goals!
God bless, pickles

It is written in the bible that Gods eyes search to and fro for one to stand in the gap, Moses stood between God and the Hebrews, Jesus stands in the gap between God and man, applying that principle i find that prayers for others is more powerful than even praying for ourselves, disciples asked Jesus teach us how to pray, simple Lords prayer for ones self is sufficent it would seem for we have the assurance of His Word over our life. Abraham said, you go left, ill go right, if you want to go right ill go left, see, Abraham knew that Gods word to Him ensured that he would be blessed regardless.
If i have a specific need i pray thank you Lord you will provide it knowing its not that i deserve it, no one does really, just that thru Jesus God answers them, yet the pray must be in accordance to His will for if its for our own lusts and wants then Ps23:1 should be removed, I THINK NOT, just making a point.

To pray for others demonstrates love care compassion mercy, how could God despise that, to be doubtful if He hears your prayers needs to be bound, torn down and cast out of your mind, devil wants one to think just that.

I used to feel the same way. I realize now that praying for others is more than just asking for God to help them, you are actually giving them a great gift. Your prayer increases God's interest towards them and thier request. It may also release God's power and great blessings for them. At the same time it demonstrates to God your willingness to help others, which is a demonstration of love.

The words of St. Paul -

"I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone...This is good, and pleases God our Savior,...."

I think prayer shows love for your neighbour/or whoever or whatever you are praying for.

One more thing...

When u r feeling "like a mess" it is because u r focusing on the mess and not on the precious child that you are to the LORD almighty. As long as your prayers are from the heart, they will be just as beautiful to our Lord's ears.

..and-a-one-a-more-a-thing...

I find it helpful to wash my face and hands before praying. It makes me feel that I am preparing myself to be present before the Lord.

King David says-

"I wash my hands to declare my innocence. I come to your altar, O LORD,"
Psalm 26:6 NLT

I got the idea of washing my face from this following verse although it is the Lord talking about fasting, not prayer:

"But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face;"
Matthew 6:17 KJV

oooh I really dont like this 5 minute post editing time limit...

Dont forget that you can ask the Holy Spirit to help you pray. He is the Helper.

"Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered."
Romans 8:26

hi,

I think praying for others even when we are a mess ourselfs is not wrong to do. We are human and we will always have some issues cause we are not perfect. I do think that God wants us to pray with the Holy Ghost. When we do that, it will be the Holy Ghost that leads us in our prayers and not our feelings. I think you can pray for yourself but also for the other and it doesn't matter about you being a mess. That doesn't mean that it cost you more energy to do so. When I feel miserable with issues I go through, I notice it costs me more energy to pray for others. I think it can also be in periods. one period you pray more for yourself then other periods. The Bible says in John chapter 4 that we need to pray in Spirit and in truth. As long as we are honest about ourselfs and others, it is good to pray. :)

Wrong. Where is repentance in there?

What HumbleSaint said ......first cast out the beam out of thine own eye: and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye. Matthew 7:5b

Repent and be washed by the blood of Jesus before you pray so that you may go clean before the Lord.
