What does the Bible mean?
Gen 1:26-27
And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

The image and likeness
God created humans to function, live, and act like him in the earth. He gave us his character, his way of thinking, and his righteousness. We were created rule and reign over all the earth and everything in it. God created us some his attributes and authority. We were created to function on earth like heaven under God's leadership to be in constant communication with him. This is my humble onion of Gen 1:26-27.

I think what I was going to contribute is a condensed version of the OP, in His image - His form. His likeness -His character. That's what I understand it to be anyway, could be wrong.

We were created to be the visible expression or impression of the invisible God. But then there was that whole business in the garden that kinda put that on hold.....until Jesus. Who is the perfect expression of the character of God and who once again makes it possible for us to express God's character by His indwelling presence.

But, we were not created with any of the attributes of God. God's attributes are who He is in Himself and are not transferable. Which is why it takes God in us for us to be man as He created man to be.

I believe we have it better now then Adam did. We have Christ inside of us. We are in union with the Father and Spirit through Jesus. We are one with the Trinity..we share in their mutual love , respect and honor for each other. It's a much better deal then what Adam had in my opinion.

The meaning of attribute is: a quality or feature regarded as a characteristic or inherent part of someone or something.
With that in mind it can be concluded that we being created in God's image and likeness share some of his attributes. How can man be the image made visible of the invisible God if we do not share in his character? This is why the Bible say God will not share his glory with another, for we (mankind) are the glory of God.

With that in mind it should be clear to you that those attributes that are inherent to God cannot be transferred to another.

Then my friend you do not understand what image and likeness you were created in and who lives in you as a believer.

based on or in accordance with reason or logic.
