”Things” can equal things not going your way, a demotion, your sports team losing, a girlfriend/boyfriend leaving, a wife/husband trying your patience.

What do you think? Is it OK to blurt out an expletive or profanity when things aren't going your way?
The Lord leads. What does Scripture say about swearing?

Here's a start, and, for context, verses 4-6 of James 5 here let us merely know some of the 'things' (oppressors, persecutors, etc. ) which might wanna cause you to say, ”Oh, sugar bisquits.” ;) And, do you think out of the mouth substitutionary words for swear words is OK by Him, too? Like saying, ”Bullpuckey” for....

I pray this thread is His doing , through faith in His finished work, by grace it saved us, can help clean out all our minds of the dung Satan wants in there to keep us from fully serving Him. Our Christ wants us to be strong in The face of our oppressors, those who persecute us, to be an example of Him, being in patient wait until He comes again :)
And, don't you think our swearing can show others who are not like us saying, ” So, that's what a Christian is like, screaming at his wife for forgetting to fix his dinner, or, screaming on the construction site a profanity when hitting their hand with a hammer.”

Do we want that? :(

Of course not, we want to help others see His Love through us, to see that we have a diiferent mind when things don't go.our way.
Scripture does say to, per Paul, in 1 Cor. 2, that we ”have the mind of Christ,” , so, let's realize that great blessed gift from Him and swear to keep it clean, so to speak . :)

James 5

4 Look! The wages you failed to pay the workers who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. 5 You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter. a 6 You have condemned and murdered the innocent one, who was not opposing you.

Okay, there's the bondage verses, we all could want to swear against that kind of unjust treatment, but Paul says, in so many words, we should turn the other cheek :)

7 Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. 8 You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near. 9 Don’t grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door!

10 Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

12 Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear —not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. All you need to say is a simple “Yes” or “No.” Otherwise you will be condemned.

Swearing isn't productive but you're using the bolded verse out of context. It's clearly talking about not making oaths in the name of anything on heaven or earth or under the earth. Oaths are very different to swear words.

What about defilement ?

What goes into the mouth is good but what comes out of the mouth defiles the man. If you swear, does that defile a man?

Greenice, the Bible says ...we should not be angry or even get angry... And then He also teaches if we get angry we should not sin. Swearing and using bad language is a sin. The Bible also teaches that we CANNOT sin if we are 100% remade (recreated) by God. The NEW creature in Christ is NEW, all old has paseed. I see it in my life. I used to swear worse than sailors, but now if I hit my finger with the hammer, I can go without swearing. Not always, but most times. Specially if my mind at that stae is on God and His word. Then swearing seems to be FAR OFF and in the distance.

Hope this helps. God said...... BLESSED IS THE MAN WHOSE THOUGHTS ARE ON GOD ALL DAY!.... I guess that is what He meant.

Luke 6:45

New International Version (NIV)

[SUP]45 [/SUP]A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.

Its not the words themselves that are the issue it's the fact that in frustration when you aren't thinking straight your default is anger and swearing rather then your default being more peaceful or controlled.

Matthew 12:36

New International Version (NIV)

[SUP]36 [/SUP]But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken.

I don't actually think that this refers to swear words necessarily but it might.
I try not to say swear words myself and honestly I fail from time to time but what i do know for sure is that the Lord sees our effort and even though we may stumble he knows where our hear is.

To sum up i'd say its probably not something that will derail you morally but it can be a foot hold for the devil it can lead from random swears to hateful words especially if it only comes out durring frustration and hateful words are not what christians are about, not to mention how it can look to non believers who may be watching you, or maybe even young believers either in age or in understanding.

Mark 9:42

New International Version (NIV)

[SUP]42 [/SUP]“If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them if a large millstone were hung around their neck and they were thrown into the sea.

Very good post, and yet I can't agree with the last Bible verse in regards to this topic. It concerns teaching children/teenagers/those young in the faith false things but presenting them as God's Word. It has nothing to do with swearing.

New International Version (NIV)

[SUP]45 [/SUP]A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.

I don't care for vulgar language and I've always tried to avoid using it. But I sometimes fall short of that avoidance, usually when I'm on the highway. Nevertheless, it's not a big deal to me if others use it. I would prefer not to hear it, but I don't get too disturbed by it's use unless it's continuous or with malice. Although, I probably wouldn't engage in a conversation with someone who just lets that type of language fly without a second thought.

To some people, profane words are nothing more than any other words, just means to express themselves. Again, I chose not to use them. And I would take offense if profanity in used in the presence of my children. But other than that, I don't pay much attention to it.

What do YOU thinks, miladies, any thoughts on swearing causing you to ”morally” weaken , to even spiritually fall ?

By the way, Benji, I like your 'morally” word but I think swearing, indeed, can afix our minds, not to mention, our actions, too, to wrong things.
I also like tintinman's interp here, even in OP, but, yes, we will give acvount for every empty word we utter on the Bema Seat at day we are before the Judge, who will be Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Ok, then, what other verses speak of swearing wrong? Cobe can you show in Scripture where it says ”swearing is a sin,” please? :)

Hmmm, deeshadoe, what about Scripture that speaks of defilement, is swearing includable?
Look at Matt. 15:19 for some help .

Can someone swearing be a God person to.witness to? Maybe it doesn't bother you, but can it be God , mabe, bothering you to just open up about Christ ?
