I've been thinking about this for probably a few months now. The Bible says that there's a time to be sad and a time to be happy. Does God consider it a sin to be sad for long periods of time, maybe even a lifetime? Okay that was really depressing lol but sometimes I consider the times we live in and all of the evil and I feel like I should be sad about all of the evil.

Does the Bible say that it's wrong to have a deep, lasting sorrow about all of the sin on earth now?

Sel this way of thinking is compassion personified. God wants us to do things for the 'least of these,' who often times are women and children who have a tough life . God wants us to help them....

Your sadness, I pray, translates to a heart to help others

also , when man started to do things with their own brothers and sisters in boring children and carousing and doing sin with no respect to God in Genesis 6, God became extrely sad, sel.

” Then the lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth and that every intent of the thought of his heart was only evil continually. and the lord was sorry that he had made man on the earth and he was grieved (utter sadness and sorrow) in his heart.”

The Lord leads, milady, follow Him, He will take away and comfort your sadness of the bad doing things of mankind. He is our Comforter, scripture says. And, Helper, He will help you understand the pain that is out there in the world, through His Word , as you pray, and, through your pastor's teaching, suhday school, and, also, your friends on c.c. :)

now go hug them cats of yours :)

Yeah I see what you're saying. It's just that I wonder alot if it's wrong to be so sad. Like evil is so prevalent on earth and it's so complicated and intertwined in life. Sometimes it's over whelming and seems like it's wrong to be so sad, but then it seems wrong to be joyful arounnd so much death and sin. I don't know I'm not really sure what the Bible says about it.

Btw don't worry, my cats get lots of hugs and cuddles and petting. :p

Sel, sadness is a normal human emotion, things sadden us in life. How we handle a given emotion housed in us makes all the difference. Handle your emotion experiencing with God, don't let it go grieving without Him as when an emotion like sadness gets ahold of you it can turn into worse emotion like sorrow and ,even, depression.

Cain was jealous of his younger brother, Abel's offering, and, it angered Cain that Abel's best lamb offering was better than Cain's fruits offering. Cain, therefore, let himself drop in emotion, his countenance dropped, Cain became angry. So, from jealousy to anger to, finally, what came from Cain not bridling his emotions.... murder of his brother. :(

So, that sadness that you have should be positive outflow, that will be a joy to God. It's OK to have a grieving heart for the sin and evil, Jesus wept in Mark 11, when saddened by Lazarus death, this, wasn't long-term sadness but it shows Jesus' submitting to human nature while on earth.

OK, some verses about understanding how to deal with this sadness. :)

Sel, God reveals the mysteries and groanings in our heart that sadden us for things beyond our control, whom is the Holy Spirit I speak of.

Galatians 2: 10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.

2:11 - For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? even though no 1 knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.

This states that we must receive the Holy Spirit (the Lord leads this to happen as we believe).

2:12 - Now we have received, not the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.

2:13 - These things we also speak, not in words which man's wisdom teachers but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

Now, that power said above verses of the Spirit comforting us and nderstanding us unto our sadness of things of this world, we go to phillipians 4:7 , this verse to help your understanding of God''s given soothingness to you, sel :)

Phil. 4:6-7 - be anxious for nothing but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving let your request be made known to God. And the peace of God which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

I'm sure those cats aren't neglected, I could see their contentedness in pictures of them on a purple blanket in one of you avatars, milady, they lookked snug as bugs in a rug :)

Q: Is long-term sadness a sin?

A: Would depend upon why one is sad.

There can be sadness because of seeing unrighteousness at work or sadness because one has not gotten what one, unjustly, desires. Huge difference.

I've suffered depression over 20 years. Many times it became quite severe. I feel no conviction over it. Psalms is full of David expressing sadness. I agree with Tribesman, to define it its wrong or not would have more to do with why.

If you feel sad then there is a reason but one must not stay dwelling on the stuff that makes you feel like crap either. Look around you and see all the beauty and all the good that is from our Lord. Think to yourself that with Jesus anything is possible. He is way bigger then all the evil in the world and the devil is the size of a ant to him and just as big as a bother (small) Do not give up the hope that Jesus has everything under control and take joy in what you can do to do your part while on this earth for him. Yes it is sad but it is also a persons choice to live with or without Jesus. Ask God to help you see his beauty that will fill your heart with happiness over stuff that makes you a prisoner.

I guess there should be a balance. Life would be pretty boring boring without humor and happiness. It's just that thinking about all the sin in my life and just all the evil everywhere, even in "good neighborhoods" it's difficult to not feel down. It feels like good is being chocked out by evil. The Bible says there's only one way to salvation, but then all the people who say they're Christians go different ways and say the other ones are going to hell. I keep wondering if it's wrong to feel sad and constantly question if I'm going the right way. I want to do right but trying to determine right from wrong sometimes makes me feel like I'm going crazy. Idk if it's wrong to feel sadness about that and constantly wonder if I'm really following God.

Sel, don't follow men, follow God. Deny youself, take up YOUR personal cross, and, this is not to be a burden, and won't be IF you keep your eyes focused on Him carrying it, and, sure, it is a struggle, but God said we would be taken care of by Him when we cast all our cares on Him (1 Peter 5:7).

Don't let the sadness of the world bring down your faith, just believe in Him as the Lord leads you, milady.

Be of good cheer , Christ says, don't worry about others' differences of faith, The Lord will lead you rightly when you ask Him, let Him speak to yourself in Him, the Holy Spirit inside your temple, , ok, :)

These things I have spoken to you that in Me you may have peace. in the world you will have tribulation but be of good cheer I have overcome the world. (John 16:33)

Let your relationship with Him grow you, deny your self's wants and desires and focus on the good that God ALL is for you :) You are God's, sel, if you believe in Him, read 1 John 5:1 :) , the Enemy WILL attack you more and more as you strengthen your faith, even pit believers against you. But your faith is your faith, read His Word, and, let Him speak to you, the Lord leads.

Satan lurks and will lear toward you....

here is the 'cast your cares' verse in context with verses around it. This will say God cares, Satan attacks, your suffering same as others in Christ believing and living, God's grace will perfect you, settleyou, sel

1 Peter 5:7-10

”Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your cares upon him, for he cares for you. be sober be there wouldn't because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. resist him steadfast in the face knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.
But may the god of all grace who called us to his eternal glory by Christ Jesus after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and, settle you. ”

Now, I think those cats of yours need to have their ears all scruffled up right now, milady :)

See the thing is people talk about demonc opression and possession and how those cause sadness. I wonder, is continual sadness of the devil? The idea of the devil lurking around as a roaring lion makes me wonder how close he is. It's terrifying because what if are demons trying to attack me or even controlling me.

Sel, God usurped ALL Satan can ultimately do to us by dying on the cross and rising again. And, as Christian followers of Christ, we will be persecuted.
I don't want to get you caught up in dwelling on evil, milady, because God is all good. You ask VERY good questions, , you are a smart young lady, I can tell. God is trying sooo hard through c.c. chatters, like eternally grateful, and, the Lord leads, but me too, I hope and pray you can see God's ability of goodness to overshadow all evil that will confront you, for God's power in you , indwelling in your temple(body), is greater than the principalities and powers of the world .

Now, some verses, milady, I hope and pray God speaks to you through your pastor and others, of understanding that God wants us to rest in Him, for He is in control of all things and is Love to tnose who Love Him.

Love Him, sel. God sooo Loves you for seeking Him now on c.c., and, wanting to understand His perfect nature :)

”Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In my Father's house (this is Heaven, sel) are many mansions; if it were not so I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
And if I go and prepare a place for you I will come again and receive you to Myself that where I am there you may be also.” John 14: 1-3

Now go scratch those cats' backs :)

Excellent scripture, Marianna , for Selenah to hear.
_______________
Sel, I was flipping through some songs googling and this one about letting your sorrows be soothed , your sadness thinking, by His angels whom God will send to comfort us in our times of need for understanding as we ask Him to. God is so good, milady His goodness is everlasting to those that choose to live in Him , like Jeremiah 31:3 says:

” The lord has been cleared of old to me, saying: 'Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you.' Jeremiah the propher speaking : 31:3

Now, the 'angels' song, close your eyes, sel, and, be embraded by God's peace and love for you . :) And then ? And then, young lady, , go hug and love them cats of yours :)

"Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep" -Romans 12: 15

We shouldn't be too flippant or mirthful, especially when we're with someone who's going through a rough time. God wants us to have empathy for each other, and also the whole world. But, we can't let our lights shine if we're always sad, either. One of the fruits of the spirit is joy! :)

I've often said that I define happiness as "Being where God wants me to be, doing what he wants me to do" :). I hope this helps!

Matt 14:22 ...to Matt 14:34..
they in the boat were not happy campers..sad !? afraid...JESUS SAID lets us go over to the other side !! there should have been no DOUBT in there mind(heart) even if the boat went upside down !! what Jesus Christ says GOES !!!!! they were going to make it.....even when he appeared walking on the water (SUPER natural event..God works outside our little boxes of thought and NATURAL abilities)..they did not expect, comprehend yet what was happening.. ghost etc??...(they were still natural men)....even Peter only one to break from the sad, fear IF !! it be you bid me come..Jesus did not wave a wand or do a magic trick.. just one WORD..COME....he started off ok but when he looked at the waves (problems and situations which God will overcome for us..IF WE LET HIM).he began to sink..fall back...fail, into despair ,sadness etc...still the Lord reached out and supported him in time, inspite of his weakness...doubt etc.

.Ne 8:10 Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.

fix your sight on the LORD..(just like the brazen serpent) and you wont be bitten by the enemy....(who delights in us being sad..sick..misery..it makes it hard to REJOICE in the LORD ALWAYS and again I say REJOICE !...christians have no choice !!??)

Jude 1:20 But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,

ps I wonder if all here know what this is !!??

Long-termed sadness is called depression. Depression is obsession of self ...EVEN if it BEGAN with a sad event, such as a death of a loved one or some other type of loss. It is the focusing of one's self with SELF. The sadness can become long termed grief and that is brought by a demon of grief coming through the 'door' of sadness that is not dealt with properly. Normal sadness over an occurrence or an event IS normal. But it should last for a relative short time, like a few weeks. Then it becomes grief and that could become demonic if not dealt with in a GODLY manner.
This is not to say that one cannot become sad when remembering a loved one. But even that sadness should fade away and lessen with time. The sadness should lessen, not the memory of the loved one.
Depression/long-term sadness or long-term grief, is NOT God's choice for how you are to live your life. So, yes, it is sin. It should be confessed as sin and prayer should ensue asking the Lord how He wants you to live your life.
According to scripture we are to choose LIFE, which speaks of Joy, peace, wisdom, etc. Depression is how the devil affects us to cause us to NOT fulfill the plan that God has created us for. It KILLS the plan of destiny that God designed us for. It STEALS our desire for LIFE. And it DESTROYS our lives, making us INEFFECTIVE for the Kingdom of God. It is impossible for a depressed person or a continually sad person to win anyone to the Lord: Who would want what a depressed/sad person has?? No one wants to be sad or depressed (although many USE it to get attention from other people...but that is a whole other ballgame of control and manipulation.) And just who is it that comes to KILL, STEAL and DESTROY??

Hope that helps!
Maggie
