I do NOT believe this repentance means we must turn from sin in order to come to Jesus. If we could do that pre conversion, then Jesus didn't have to die.
That is not quite correct. Turning from sins and idols and turning to Christ are all part of repentance. Otherwise turning to Christ is a sham. And it is the recognition that Christ died for our sins that leads to repentance.

For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God; And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come. (1 Thess 1:9,10)

And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds. Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. (Acts 19:18,19) [Note: curious arts = occultism, magic, and sorcery]

Fifty thousand pieces of silver in those day may have been the same as $15,000,000 today. This was the price of repentance. and that happened as soon as they believed. [Note: some have estimated that a piece of silver then was worth about $300 today]
