"You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them."—Exodus 20:4-5.

So whether you call it veneration or worship the result's the same.

I am not 100 per cent sure...But did the Catholic church not divide this commandment so they have 11 ?
I know that they worked around this , hence all the idolatry...
I don't think they have made 11 commandments out of the ten but they omit part of the second commandment in their teaching of the ten commandments.
Example

Like the Pharisees in the first century, they reject the commandment of God that they can keep their own tradition.

Mark 7:6-9
He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.

7Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

8For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.

9And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.
