1 Samuel 16:12

Revelation 19:12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, ...
God's eyes are compared with flame of fire 3 times in the book of Revelation.
Apostle John capitalized upon love of God the most. He was "the beloved disciple". Not because others were loved less, but he longed for God's love especially, and was given to perceive more.
Some translations say that David had a beautiful countenance, instead of eyes. This is not to be understood as physical appearance, if we look how the word countenance is used throughout the Bible it actually reflects the spirit or feelings and other inward contents of the soul, shown through the outward appearance of the person. Per example, how some people look like meek and kind souls, and some have a look of evil, you look at that person and they look mean or just plain evil. That's countenance in Biblical sense. Here Hebrew literally says "eyes". One looks into his eyes, and they could see his lovely spirit.
I believe based on how eyes/countenance is being pointed out, that here "handsome appearance" prophetically represents virtues of spiritual comeliness that is found in Christ. No reason to doubt that king David was comely physically as well.
