Prisoners Of War

“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me…to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound.” Isaiah 61:14

Most people do not think they are at war with Satan, but Satan is at war with everyone, especially Christians.

In Genesis 3:15, God says there will be enmity (war or hatred) between Satan and the woman, and between Satan’s followers and Christ, which includes believers, since they are in Christ. Satan also comes trying to steal, kill, and destroy from everyone (Jn. 10:10). As a result, most people are defeated and are his prisoners of war since they do not know how to have victory over sin and Satan.

The following are examples of the numbers per year in the United States of those who are defeated and are Satan’s prisoners of war in the following categories:
• 38 million who are in bondage to alcohol
• 22 million drug addicts.
• 1.3 million who attempt suicide, and 40,000 who take their own lives
• 28,000 viewers of Internet porn every second
• Those who sexually abuse one out of three girls and one out of five boys before they reach the age of 18
• Those who sexually, physically, or verbally abuse or neglect 1 million children annually
• Those who cause 4.7 million women to be victims of domestic violence annually
• 3 million addicted to gambling
• 33.8 million adults who smoke or chew tobacco and 440,000 who die annually as a result.
• 17 percent of children and 37 percent of adults who are obese

These are some pretty obvious examples, and some of them are Christians who are struggling to overcome sin. But there are many who are struggling and losing to less obvious sins such as fear, anger, depression, unforgiveness, and selfishness. When the Assyrians would capture prisoners of war, they would put a ring or hook through the lower lips of the defeated soldiers so they could lead them around. The Babylonians put a ring or hook through the noses of prisoners of war. After prisoners of war were shown off in the triumph of a victorious Roman general (see last month’s article), half of them were killed and the other half became slaves. All of this is similar to how Satan uses and abuses his prisoners of war.

The reason Christians have become prisoners of the war with Satan is because they are fighting the wrong war, and they are trying to fight Satan and sin the wrong way. Christians are not to fight against sin because the power of sin is greater than their greatest strength. God told Paul that the power of Christ could only help him when he realized how weak he himself was, and that he had to totally depend on Christ so God’s power could work in and through him (II Cor. 12:9).

In realizing their helplessness and understanding that they do not have to turn to hopelessness, Christians can say yes to the hope that is only available in Christ. Besides that, the power of sin was already broken on the Cross, so believers do not have to keep fighting that battle.

Therefore, their weapons are not carnal (II Cor. 10:4), or something they can produce themselves and use to accomplish their victory. Their battle is not against acts of sin, but the fight is to keep their faith in who Christ is and what He did on the Cross, so they stay in His death, burial, and resurrection and are, therefore, victorious. That is the only way they are triumphant in Christ (II Cor. 2:14). And that is the only way He can work in them both to will (change their desires), and to do (give them the power of the Holy Spirit) (Phil. 2:13), so they can overcome sin. This is the only way believers can yield themselves as God’s servants (slaves) of obedience instead of being slaves to sin unto death (Rom. 6:16).

A believer can know he is a prisoner of war if he is repeatedly committing sins, such as works of the flesh (Gal. 5:19-21), or he is missing some of the fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22-23).

Spiritual Adultery (Rom. 7:1-4); proclaiming Jesus, but forsaking the Cross (lukewarm-The Law of sin and death).

The role of obedience in a Christian life is Faith exclusively in Christ and His Finished Work at Calvary Cross (The Law of the Spirit of Life In Christ Jesus - Romans 8:2). This gives the Holy Spirit the legal means (who only works in this parameter) to help us and transforms us into what we ought to be (Christlikeness - Romans 8:13). Faith in anything and everything else, the works of the flesh will manifest (Gal. 5:19-21). You are now committing Spiritual Adultery (Romans 7:1-6).

It is difficult for Believers to place their Faith exclusively in the Cross of Christ because it goes against the flesh (Romans 8:7; Gal. 5:17).

If you leave the Cross, you walk away from God!

Place and maintain your Faith exclusively in Christ and the Cross of Calvary where the victory was won, and watch Jesus show up and show out in your life!

The scripture says it like this:

He that hath My commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth Me: and he that loveth Me shall be loved of My Father, and I will love him,
and will manifest Myself to him. John 14:21

If Christ is a law keeper, than the Believer is a law keeper because we are in Him when our Faith is placed and maintained exclusively in Christ and the Cross. In other words all things become possible...Amen

The moment you place and maintain your Faith exclusively in Christ and the Cross, you immediately will receive the help of the Holy Spirit. This is why the Lord said, " He will perfect that which concerns me!" Psalm 138:8

Remember the more knowledge you learn about God the Father, and the Lamb of God, Jesus, all the promises of God in the bible will be added. Blessing will chase you down!

1 Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:

2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,

3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 2 Peter

Please remember this. Very Very Important! Faith placed in Christ and the Cross are our weapons that are not carnal. Why? Because we receive the help of the Holy Spirit!

Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth. 1 John 1:2

Your Word for Today

“My little children, these things write I unto you, that you sin not. And if any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the Righteous: And He is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world (I Jn. 2:1-2).

The Apostle John is not here revealing these great truths in order that we may sin and keep sinning, but rather that we stop sinning. But if the Believer does sin, we have an Advocate, Who is the Righteous One, and, at the same time, the Mercy Seat, so to speak. His Work, His Person, and His Action all unite in maintaining the Believer in the enjoyment of conscious fellowship with God. As a Priest, He deals with the guilt of sins; as an Advocate, with the restoration of the soul. Sin interrupts communion; the Advocate restores it.

The efficacy (effectiveness) of His action is guaranteed by the Righteousness of His Person and the value of His Propitiation, and these are unchangeable. Before Peter sinned, Christ prayed for him; when he sinned, He looked on him; and when he repented, He restored him — and so effectually restored him that Peter was able to strengthen his Brother Apostles. So effective is that Mercy Seat as a Propitiation for sins that if all men would approach Him for forgiveness of sin, then all men would be pardoned. The Atoning Sacrifice of Christ furnishes an ample provision for the Redemption of all men, but its benefit is only appropriated by those who believe (Jn. 3:16).

Jesus Christ is our “Advocate with the Father.” He is always in fellowship with the Father. Thus, if the Saint loses fellowship with Him through sin, and if the Believer properly confesses that sin, the Lord, in a sense, pleads our cause on the basis of His Precious Blood, and thereby brings us back into fellowship again. However, when we say “plead,” we are not really meaning that Jesus says anything or does anything. His very Presence before the Father guarantees that the intercession will be accepted, at least for those who will believe (Heb. 7:25-27; 10:12-14).

The word “Propitiation,” in its short form, means “to make satisfaction.” However, while that does explain the word, it does not give the true meaning. The Scriptural conception of the word is not that of merely appeasing one who is angry with a personal feeling against the offender, but of altering the character of that which, from without, occasions a necessary alienation, and interposes an inevitable obstacle to fellowship.

That from without which occasioned the alienation between God and man was, and is sin. It was the guilt of sin that separated man from his Creator. On the Cross, our Lord assumed that guilt and paid the penalty in His Own Blood, and thus removed the cause of alienation. Now a Holy and Righteous God can bestow Mercy upon a believing sinner on the basis of justice satisfied. Our Lord provided a satisfaction for the demands of the broken Law. That satisfaction is the “Propitiation.” The Greek rendition is: “He Himself is a satisfaction.” The point is that the Old Testament Priest offered an animal sacrifice, but not himself as the sacrifice. This wonderful New Testament Priest, the Lord Jesus Christ, is both the Priest and the Sacrifice.

That Propitiation is as wide as the sin. We must never forget that! If men do not experience its benefit, the fault is not in the effectiveness of the Propitiation, but in the man himself. That fault, if there is a fault, is “unbelief.”

If men believe in Christ and the Cross, they will obtain the benefits of all that Christ has accomplished.“

Bread Crumbs “Good Tidings”

The term “good tidings” means that something wonderful is being told or expressed. Think about the best news you have ever received. It might have been a Doctor’s report that informed you that what they had expected to find negative in your body was not there. How about the news that a bill you had dreaded and had no way of paying had just been eliminated? Perhaps the one you love has just agreed to spend the rest of their life with you. Good tidings! But how about the news that was announced by the angelic hosts on the night that the Son of God was born? How about the news that all your sins could be forgiven and forgotten? How about the proclamation that the chains of your slavery to sin had been broken? How about the promise of eternal life being given freely to all who would believe? No matter what other news you might have ever received, there has never been a more significant announcement than this. These were good tidings to all the inhabitants of the earth. A Saviour had come! A King had been born! A Deliverer was established. And all of it was done just for you and me! Good tidings! Good tidings! Good tidings!

Luke 2:10-11 - “And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. (11) For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.”

The Miracle of God’s Word

Proverbs 30:3
I neither learned wisdom, nor have the knowledge of the holy.

The writer, if it is Solomon, declares that he didn’t learn wisdom because he was given wisdom, without the process of learning, and he also confesses that he does not have the knowledge of the holy, which according to Proverbs 9:10 is understanding. He has already confessed that he has no understanding of a man. These Proverbs seem tough to understand, but I believe it is a man writing who is comparing his knowledge, understanding and wisdom to that of God’s which makes man’s look like nothing.

Also let us remember that even the wisest man of the Old Testament, which was Solomon, was only looking at types and shadows and could not see, nor could he understand that which was to come outside of a symbolic view (1 Peter 1:10-12). Without the revelation of Christ, in whom are all the treasures of God’s wisdom revealed (Colossians 2:2-3), there can be no experiential wisdom, nor knowledge that brings the experience of Life in Christ. We have Christ as our Light (John 8:12), and we walk with Him as He walks in the Light (1 John 1:7). Only through faith in Christ AND HIS WORK at the cross, do we have His Light, and do we become His Light in this dark world.

Your Word for Today

“Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it does not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when He shall appear, we shall be like Him; for we shall see Him as He is. And every man who has this hope in Him purifies himself, even as He is pure. Whosoever commits sin transgresses also the Law: for sin is the transgression of the Law. And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins; and in Him is no sin (I Jn. 3:2-5).

Here John states that Believers are “now” sons of God, meaning that it’s not something future, but present. The world neither recognizes nor acknowledges Believers as sons of God; just as they neither recognized nor acknowledged Christ to be the Son of God.

The term “manifested” occurs three times in the Greek Text (Vss. 2, 5, 8), and responds to three cries of the heart:

1. The cry for liberation from sins and their eternal doom. The answer to that is: He was manifested to take away sins, and as He could not possibly fail in what He came to do, the Believer learns with wonder and joy that his sins are taken away forever (Vs. 5).

2. The second manifestation concerns the cry of the renewed heart to be sinless. This cry will be satisfied when we shall be manifested, for His People shall be like Him (Vs. 2).

3. This third cry is that of anguish and perplexity of the heart awakened to the misery, injustice, cruelty, and suffering in the world. The answer is found in Verse 8. They are “the works of the Devil”; the Son of God was manifested to destroy them, and so will He do.

The “likeness,” as John introduces the statement referring to the similarity with Christ, presents a physical likeness, and not a spiritual one. Saints are already spiritually like the Lord Jesus in a relative sense; through the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit, we are being conformed more and more to His spiritual likeness. Actually, here John is speaking of the Rapture and the change that will take place in the physical body upon that great event. It refers to all Saints at that time having a Glorified Body, exactly as Jesus did when He was resurrected. The change, at least that which John addresses here, which comes at the Rapture, is, therefore, a physical one. We shall be like our Lord as to His physical, glorified Body.

The phrase, “Be fashioned alike,” in the Greek is “summorphon,” which means “the outer enswathement of glory that now covers the Body of the Lord Jesus, and which will, at the Rapture, cover ours.” Only at the Rapture will we be able to see our Lord as He is now, for physical eyes and a mortal body could not look on that glory, only eyes in a glorified body. And that is the reason we shall be like Him, for only in that state can we see Him just as He is.

As to the expression, “purifies himself,” this is not to be taken in the sense that man can purify himself, for he cannot. “Apart from Me,” says our Lord, “you can do nothing” (Jn. 15:5). The statement implies a will to purify oneself, not out of, nor independent of, this hope, but ever stirred up by and accompanying it.

So this will is really not our own, but the result of the Christian state, in which the Lord also ministers to us the power to carry out that will in self-purification. It is done only by the Believer placing his Faith exclusively in Christ and the Cross, which then gives the Holy Spirit latitude to do this necessary work within our lives, which He most definitely will do. Thus, in dependence upon the Holy Spirit, the Saint can put sin out of his life and keep it out (Rom. 8:1-2, 11).“

Bread Crumbs “The Word Was Made Flesh”

Emmanuel - the name means God with us. Aren’t you glad that it does not mean God against us. Surely that is what we deserve, each and every one of us. As the scripture states, “There is none good, no not one.” You would think that God in heaven would be inalterably opposed to the creation that denied Him, rejected Him, and declared Him inadequate and inconsequential. But instead of turning His face in anger towards His hopeless beleaguered creation, the God of all the universe choose to send His only Begotten Son to pay the price to rescue man from his active disobedience, rebellion, and insubordination. I’m so glad that He sent Emmanuel - God with us, to eliminate our penalties earned, and to pave a way, so undeserved, back to the Father. No wonder angels sang and shouted on the day that He was born in that manger so long ago. Yes, He did come! And He did live! And He did die for the sins of all men! He did rise again and ascend unto His Father in heaven! And He did send back His Holy Spirit to live in all who will simply believe! Truly we rejoice today for He is God in us, revealed in us. We call His name, Emmanuel!

John 1:14 - And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

The Miracle of God’s Word

Proverbs 30:4
Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? Who hath gathered the wind in his fists? Who hath bound the waters in a garment? Who hath established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son's name, if thou canst tell?

This is very prophetic, and of course speaking of God as the next verse bears out. What is amazing is that He speaks of God and God’s Son. The amazing answer to all the questions in this one verse of Scripture is, “God.” The New Covenant reveals to us that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and He alone is upholding all things by the Word of His power (Hebrews 1:3). The Word of His power is of course the Word of His cross, as that alone is what purged us from our sins and has allowed Him to be seated at the right hand of the Majesty on High (Hebrews 1:3). May we be found clinging to that old rugged cross this day and everyday, as it is what God calls His power (1 Corinthians 1:18), and through which our faith in Him allows us to be being made comformable unto His death (Philippians 3:10).

Your Word for Today

“But the Anointing which you have received of Him abides in you, and you need not that any man teach you: but as the same Anointing teaches you of all things, and is Truth, and is no lie, and even as it has taught you, you shall abide in Him (I Jn. 2:27).

There are two Divine safeguards which preserve from error. They are the Holy Spirit and the Holy Scriptures. These teach young converts, actually all Believers, to recognize and reject false teaching.

The Roman Catholic plea of “Development,” which refers, as they claim, to the Word of God being developed in the Church, is overthrown by the words of Verse 24, which says, “That which is from the beginning. . . .” This is the safeguard of the Word of God, which pertains to that and only that which was heard from the beginning, meaning that the Word of God is already fully and totally developed. Nothing must be taken from or added to it. The sheep listen to nothing else, for they know the Shepherd’s voice.

The Holy Spirit indwells all Believers. When Believers diligently study the Word, the Holy Spirit, according to the Word, will help them to know what is Truth. They will be able to detect a lie as being opposed to the Truth. All Believers, that is, if they properly know and understand the Word, as can all who so desire, are furnished with Divine equipment capable of enabling all of us to know “all things.” So, according to the Word of God, since the “anointing” abides in us and teaches us what is right and wrong, that is, if we will only properly heed, there is no excuse for Believers to accept false doctrine.

A proper understanding of the Word refers to a proper understanding of the Cross. If one doesn’t properly understand the Cross, one does not understand the Word. The story of the Bible is the story of Jesus Christ and Him Crucified. In truth, the Cross was established in the mind of the Godhead even before the world was created, which means that the Cross was an established fact even before the first words of the Bible were given (I Pet. 1:18-20).

So if one properly understands the Cross, that will go a long, long way toward the recognition of false doctrine, for this is the way the Holy Spirit works (Rom. 8:2; Gal., Chpt. 5; 6:14; Eph. 2:13-18).“

Bread Crumbs “True Relationships”

A genuine relationship with someone else normally begins with one act of kindness, followed by another, then another, then another. In this present life relationships with other human beings is the most challenging drama that we will ever encounter. The fall has made man a creature of self interest and self love. What matters most to us is us. To allow or to invite another human being into our private sphere of self demands sacrifice. I have to give up some of the time that I spend thinking about myself and I have to spend it thinking about you. This does not come naturally to fallen man. Neither does it come naturally or easily to the born-again Christian. We are instructed to love others as much as we love ourselves. We are told to do onto others as we would that men do unto us. Relationships demand that we listen to and consider someone else's opinion. Relationships demand an ongoing process of “give and take.” To genuinely love someone regardless of what they can or cannot add to you, is the kind of covenant love that God expresses towards us. Only by His grace will we ever be able to express covenant love to another. Relationships are work!

1 Samuel 18:3 - Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.

The Miracle of God’s Word

Proverbs 30:5
Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.

The three things we should take note of in this one verse of Scripture is God’s Word, every Word of God, that all His Words are pure, then we see the colon
:)), which reveals that something is about to be said that is either an opposite to what was just said, or something is about to be said that will intensify what was just stated. Either way, what is on the second side of the colon will help us to see more clearly what was stated on the first side.

The Bible tells us that Faith is our shield (Ephesians 6:16), and that this faith, or this shield, comes to us, or is in operation, through our hearing God’s Word (Romans 10:17). Our hearing God’s Word is our trusting in His Word in the context of Christ and Him crucified, for it must be the Word of the Truth of the Gospel (Colossians 1:5) for faith to come and fruit to be experienced. The word, “Pure” means to be tried and found pure, and it was at the cross we see God’s Living Word (Jesus) tried and found to be pure! There is surely a hedge (shield) around God’s people, and that hedge (shield) is a hedge of blood, the blood of the Lamb of God. Jesus! Jesus!

Your Word for Today

“Whosoever is born of God does not commit sin; for His seed remains in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God (I Jn. 3:9).

The person who has accepted Christ now has the Divine nature (II Pet. 1:4). While he still retains the sin nature, now his human nature is guided and controlled by the Divine nature — at least that’s the way it should be! If the Believer continually makes the Cross of Christ the Object of his faith, which gives the Holy Spirit latitude to work within his heart and life, then he will walk in victory, with no possibility of the sin nature having dominion over him (Rom. 6:14).

But most Christians do not have even the foggiest idea as to the part the Cross plays regarding our Sanctification; consequently, they attempt, by various ways, to sanctify themselves, which, of course, is impossible. But for the person whose Faith is exclusively in Christ and the Cross, it is impossible for that individual to live a life of habitual sinning.

“Commit” in the Greek is “poieo,” which means “a continuous action,” at least as it is used here. The actual translation reads, “Everyone who has been born out of God, with the present result that he is a born-one of God, does not habitually practice sin.” The short phrase, “His seed,” refers to the principle of Divine Life in the Believer, i.e., “the Divine nature.” It is this principle of the Divine nature that makes it impossible for a Christian to live habitually in sin, for the Divine nature causes the Child of God to hate sin and love Righteousness, and gives him both the desire and the power to do God’s Will. The phrase, “And he cannot sin, because he is born of God,” means that the Believer “cannot practice sin, because he is born of God.” The Text, as it is translated in the King James Version of the Bible, does not mean, as some think, that John is teaching sinless perfection. The Bible doesn’t teach that. The Holy Spirit through John is teaching that the Born-Again Believer cannot live a life of practicing sin, which should be obvious. If the Believer is practicing sin, which means that he sins with impunity, this simply means that the one so doing is not actually Born-Again.“
