2- John is the only one to speak about the wedding feast at Cana where Jesus performs his first miracle. Jesus and his disciples are invited to the feast. There is no more wine and Mary, Jesus’ mother tells it to him. She wants him to do something thus she knows what Jesus can do. But it is strange that she asks him to do so because there is no point for Jesus to turn the water in wine except for his disciples to put faith in him: they listen to his teaching and now they can see his miracles so his words are connected to his actions. He has a mission and his miracles must serve a purpose. But he does it all at once and it is a good quality wine. So we can see right at the beginning the high quality teaching and the high quality works which differ a lot from man’s actions!

3- John doesn’t speak about Simon’s mother-in-law’s high fever. In fact, he only mentions few miracles but each time he develops his narration giving details like in the case of the wedding feast at Cana and the fact that Jesus’ disciples put faith in him.

8- John speaks about Jesus walking on the sea:

- Evening fells

- The disciples go down to the sea and board a boat

- they set out across the sea for Capernaum

- It has grown dark and Jesus has not yet come to them

- The sea is getting rough because a strong wind is blowing

- However, when they have rowed about three or four miles, they see Jesus walking on the sea and getting near the boat

- they become fearful

- Jesus says to them:

It is I; do not be afraid!”

- He goes into the boat and right away the boat arrives at the land to which they have been heading.

9- John speaks about Jesus multiplying bread and fish:

- Jesus says to Philip:

Where will we buy bread for these people to eat?”

- He says that to test him, for he knows what he is about to do

- Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother speaks about five barley loaves and two small fish

- Jesus tells them to have the people sit down

- There are about 5,000 men

- So he takes the bread, and after giving thanks, he distributes it to those who are sitting there

- And he does the same with the small fish

- And they have as much as they want

- Jesus tells his disciples to gather what is left that is 12 baskets with fragments left over by those who have eaten from the five barley loaves

- Then the people say:

This really is the Prophet who was to come into the world”

- But knowing they want to make him king, he withdraws again to the mountain all alone

John gives us more details:

- At the beginning, Jesus wants to test Philip but he knows exactly what he is going to do

- We are told about what the people think of Jesus that is he is the Christ

- They want to make him king so he goes away

12- John doesn’t speaks about Jesus curing Jairus’ daughter and the woman who touches him but he is the only one who speaks about Jesus resurrecting Lazarus and with many details:

- Lazarus is sickness- He is from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha

- Mary poured perfumed oil on Jesus and wiped his feet dry with her hair

- Lazarus is her brother

- They send a message to Jesus to tell that Lazarus is sickness

- Jesus is going to save Lazarus but for the glory of God

- Thus he remains where he is for two more days. In fact, he is waiting for Lazarus to die so he can resurrect him so it may be used as a testimony.

- He tells his disciples they are going to Galilee again

- He says that Lazarus has fallen asleep but he is going to awaken him meaning he is dead but he is going to resurrect him. His disciples don’t understand so he tells them he has died but he wants them to see that he can resurrect him. Thomas thinks they are going to die with him.

- Lazarus has been in the tomb for four days!

- Bethany is near Jerusalem , about two miles away

- Many of the Jews have come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother

- Martha goes to meet Jesus and she says:

Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. Yet even now I know that whatever you ask God for, God will give you.”

Thus Martha knows perfectly what Jesus can do and that “WHATEVER HE ASKS GOD FOR, GOD WILL GIVE HIM”!

- Jesus answers:

Your brother will rise”

- She thinks “he will rise in the resurrection on the last day”

- Mary goes and meets Jesus and repeats what her sister said that is that if Jesus had been there Lazarus wouldn’t have died

- Jesus sees Mary and the Jews who have come with her weeping

- He groans within himself and becomes troubled

- He gives way to tears

- People don’t understand why Jesus didn’t prevent Lazarus from dying

- He goes to the tomb and asks the stone to be taken away

- Martha says the corpse must be smelling

- Jesus praises to God so people can hear them and believe that God sent him

- Then he cries out to Lazarus to come out

- Lazarus comes out with wrappings

- He tells people to free Lazarus and let him go

- Many Jews put faith in Jesus but others go to the Pharisees to tell them about Jesus’ miracle

- The chief priests and the pharisees gather the Sanhedrin together about jesus and his powerful signs

- They fear that the Romans will come and take away their nation

- Caiaphas, who is high priest that year, prophesies that Jesus is to die for the nation but also to gather together into one the children of God who are scattered about

- So they start conspiring to kill him

15- John speaks about Jesus curing a son of a royal official who is sick in Capernaum:

- The man comes to Jesus and asks him to come down and heal his son for he is at the point of dying

- Jesus tells him:

Go your way; your son lives.”

- The man believes the word that Jesus speaks to him, and he leaves

- But while he is on his way down, his slaves meet him to say that his boy is alive

- So he asks them at what hour he gets better

- They reply to him:

The fever left him yesterday at the seventh hour.”

- The father then knows that it was in the very hour that Jesus had said to him:

Your son lives.”

- So he and his whole household believe

- John says it is the second miracle of Jesus

Once again we can see that Jesus can cure all at once that is quite different from what men can do, really impressive and meaning that nothing is impossible for God and Jesus at the difference of men that’s why we can trust them!

16- John speaks about Jesus curing a lame man:

- In Jerusalem at the Sheep Gate is a pool called in Hebrew Bethzatha, with five colonnades

- There many people are lying down: the sick and blind and lame and those with withered limbs

- There is one man who has been sick for 38 years

- Jesus is aware that he has been sick for a long time

- He says to him:

Do you want to get well?”

- The sick man answers:

Sir, I do not have anyone to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I am on my way, another steps down ahead of me.”

- Jesus says to him:

Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.”

- And the man immediately gets well, and he picks up his mat and begins to walk

- Jesus cures the man on the Sabbath

- The Jews want to know who cured him

- Later he meets Jesus again so he tells the Jews that Jesus cured him

- And the Jews persecute him because he cures people during the Sabbath and he calls God his own Father, making himself equal to God.

- And Jesus tells them that the Son does like his Father and as the father raises the dead up and makes them alive so the Son also makes alive whomever he wants to. And Jesus says that the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life and those who practiced vile things to a resurrection of judgment.

20- John speaks about Jesus curing a blind man:

- Jesus sees a man who has been BLIND FROM BIRTH

- Jesus’ disciples ask him who sinned , this man or his parents, so that he was born blind?

- Jesus answers them:

Neither this man nor his parents, but it was so that the works of God might be made manifest in his case. We must do the works of the One who sent me while it is day; the night is coming when no man can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the world’s light.”

- Jesus spits on the ground and makes a paste with the saliva, ans he smears the paste on the man’s eyes and says to him:

Go wash in the pool of Siloam” meaning “Sent forth”

- And the man goes and washes and comes back seeing

- The man tells the people how Jesus did to cure him

- They bring him to the Pharisees

- The man explains again how Jesus cured him

- The Pharisees call the man’s parents and ask them if he couldn’t see

- They say that he is their son and that he was born blind

- The man repeats again to the Pharisees that Jesus cured him and that he is from God but the pharisees don’t want to accept it

- So they throw him out

- And again Jesus condemns the Pharisees because they don’t want to accept the truth while they see the powerful works of God done by Jesus

29- John speaks about Jesus putting back the ear of the slave of the high priest:

- Judas leads a crowd to take hold of Jesus

- Then Simon Peter, who has a sword, draws it and strikes the slave of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. The name of the slave was malchus

- Jesus, however, says to Peter:

Put the sword into its sheath. Should I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?”

1-

- First Jesus turns the water into wine. He wasn’t supposed to do that as he answers his mother in John 2:4:

Woman, why is that of concern to me and to you? My hour has not yet come.”

- If Mary asks him to do so, it means she knows he can do it. Unfortunately we don’t have any information about his youth except when he was 12.

- Can we call that respect for his mother? Nothing is said about that.

- Jesus tells those serving exactly what they have to do

- The wine is of good quality

- Jesus couldn’t have done a better job

- At the end of chapter 2, John says that his disciples put their faith in him: after his teaching, they could see what he was able to do for the first time.

2- At the end of chapter 2, we are told that Jesus performs signs but we are not told in details. But if people put faith in him, it means that what he does is powerful!

John 2:23:

However, when he was in Jerusalem at the festival of the Passover, many people put their faith in his name when they saw the signs that he was performing.”

3- Right at the beginning they know who Jesus is:

- John the baptist speaks about him

- He performs many signs

- Nicodemus speaks about him:

John 3:1,2

There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This one came to him in the night and said to him:”Rabbi, we know that you have come from God as a teacher, for no one can perform these signs that you perform unless God is with him.”

4- In Cana of Galilee, Jesus cures the son of a royal official who is about to die. But he doesn’t go to the house of the man, he just says to the man:

John 4:50

““Go your way; your son lives.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he left. But while he was on his way down, his slaves met him to say that his boy was alive. So he asked them at what hour he got better. They replied to him: “The fever left him yesterday at the seventh hour.” The father then knew that it was in the very hour that Jesus had said to him: “Your son lives.” so he and his whole household believed. This was the second sign Jesus performed when he came from Judea into Galilee.”

So Jesus can do everything, nothing is impossible to him! It is completely different from what men can do! They don’t belong to the same category!
