12- John doesn’t speaks about Jesus curing Jairus’ daughter and the woman who touches him but he is the only one who speaks about Jesus resurrecting Lazarus and with many details:
- Lazarus is sickness- He is from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha
- Mary poured perfumed oil on Jesus and wiped his feet dry with her hair
- Lazarus is her brother
- They send a message to Jesus to tell that Lazarus is sickness
- Jesus is going to save Lazarus but for the glory of God
- Thus he remains where he is for two more days. In fact, he is waiting for Lazarus to die so he can resurrect him so it may be used as a testimony.
- He tells his disciples they are going to Galilee again
- He says that Lazarus has fallen asleep but he is going to awaken him meaning he is dead but he is going to resurrect him. His disciples don’t understand so he tells them he has died but he wants them to see that he can resurrect him. Thomas thinks they are going to die with him.
- Lazarus has been in the tomb for four days!
- Bethany is near Jerusalem , about two miles away
- Many of the Jews have come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother
- Martha goes to meet Jesus and she says:
“Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. Yet even now I know that whatever you ask God for, God will give you.”
Thus Martha knows perfectly what Jesus can do and that “WHATEVER HE ASKS GOD FOR, GOD WILL GIVE HIM”!
- Jesus answers:
“Your brother will rise”
- She thinks “he will rise in the resurrection on the last day”
- Mary goes and meets Jesus and repeats what her sister said that is that if Jesus had been there Lazarus wouldn’t have died
- Jesus sees Mary and the Jews who have come with her weeping
- He groans within himself and becomes troubled
- He gives way to tears
- People don’t understand why Jesus didn’t prevent Lazarus from dying
- He goes to the tomb and asks the stone to be taken away
- Martha says the corpse must be smelling
- Jesus praises to God so people can hear them and believe that God sent him
- Then he cries out to Lazarus to come out
- Lazarus comes out with wrappings
- He tells people to free Lazarus and let him go
- Many Jews put faith in Jesus but others go to the Pharisees to tell them about Jesus’ miracle
- The chief priests and the pharisees gather the Sanhedrin together about jesus and his powerful signs
- They fear that the Romans will come and take away their nation
- Caiaphas, who is high priest that year, prophesies that Jesus is to die for the nation but also to gather together into one the children of God who are scattered about
- So they start conspiring to kill him
