Love was compressed for all history in that lonely figure on the cross, who said that He could call down angels at any moment on a rescue mission, but chose not to - because of us. At Calvary God accepted His own unbreakable terms of justice.
- Philip Yancey

Without justice, there could be no grace or mercy.

1 Peter 3

3:18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

My eyes are ever toward יהוה, For He brings my feet out of the net. Turn Your face to me, and show me favor, For I am lonely and afflicted. The distresses of my heart have enlarged; Oh, bring me out of my distresses! Look on my affliction and my toil, And forgive all my sins.”

What can men plead before God....works, obedience to law that condmens because no one keeps it, some tyoe of religious religion etc...? NO.....only one thing pleases and meets the requirement of God.....FAITH AND CONFESSION OF THE BLOOD OF CHIRIST......all else is folly......WHEN God sees the blood...he will pass over and the just shall live by faith!

And that is only because His justice towards you (and me) was applied strictly and in full to the Lamb of God on the Cross. Yes, there can be no mercy from God until and unless the full demands of justice have been met, and they were met at the Cross.

Exodus 34:6-7
And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, 7Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.

John 3:16-18
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Psalm 89:14
Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face.

Praise the Lord!

I will give thanks to the Lord with all my heart,
In the company of the upright and in the assembly.
Great are the works of the Lord;
They are studied by all who delight in them.
Splendid and majestic is His work,
And His righteousness endures forever.
He has made His
wonders to be remembered;

The Lord is gracious and compassionate.
He has given food to those who fear Him;
He will remember His covenant forever.
He has made known to His people the power of His works,
In giving them the heritage of the nations.

The works of His hands are truth and justice;
All His precepts are sure.
They are upheld forever and ever;
They are performed in
truth and uprightness.
He has sent redemption to His people;
He has
ordained His covenant forever;
Holy and
awesome is His name.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
A good understanding have all those who do His commandments;
His praise endures forever.

As we can see in Psalm 111 and Psalm 89 (and many other Psalms) all of God's attributes are always in perfect balance. Hence the psalmist can mention God righteousness, grace, compassion, truth, justice, redemption (mercy) all in the same breath. So when people say that the God of the Old Testament is not the same as the God of the New Testament, it simply means that they have not studied the matter carefully and properly.

Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe.
For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith.
This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.
It was to show his righteousness at the present time,

so that he might be just
(His justice) and the justifier (His mercy) of the one who has faith in Jesus. (Rom 3:21:26)
