(don't want to start a long thread here, just wondering how this is done)

for anyone who wants to keep the law literally, like don't eat ham, how would you do this?

DEUTERONOMY 21:10 When you go out to war against your enemies, and the LORD your God gives them into your hand and you take them captive,
DEUTERONOMY 21:11 and you see among the captives a beautiful woman, and you desire to take her to be your wife,
DEUTERONOMY 21:12 and you bring her home to your house, she shall shave her head and pare her nails.
DEUTERONOMY 21:13 And she shall take off the clothes in which she was captured and shall remain in your house and lament her father and her mother a full month. After that you may go in to her and be her husband, and she shall be your wife.

Fortunately, I got married BEFORE I started studying the Torah.;)

This is talking about taking a wife when you go to war, not marriage in general.

The spiritual lessons here are powerful, though. This is a woman of a different nationality who is the enemy of Israel. So God tells the husband to remove everything that would have physically associated this woman with her old life. She even mourns her family so she isn't emotionally tied to them anymore. After all of these things, then the man can take her as a wife.

I think you might misunderstand those who keep the law.

Here are a few facts.

The law as a whole was given to Israel at a curtain time. Thus the law explains how they should live in the customs of the time. For example there are no laws about how to drive a car because there were no cars back then. It is also true that some of the laws back then have no baring on today as we don't live like them, Our culture is different. we are not a theocracy.

God said when they were captive in other countries to live peaceably in that land to accept the rule of that land. Thus they would not have even been able to do some of these things. See Isaiah and Jeremiah.

The same applies today as we shall live according to the laws of the land. except if the law of the land goes against any of the law of love. But simple laws explaining every day living has a context time and culture that is not relevant to us.

As far as eating ham all you have to do is study up on modern science to see its not good for you. and there is no law in the land saying you have to eat it. So best stick with God on that one.

we must rightly divide the word of truth.

This comes form the blanket statement that the old covenant is gone. Well yes it is as it was one covenant which held in it many laws that do not apply to a western modern culture. However to suggest that we just dismiss everything in it is faulty. The disciples themselves and Jesus taught to keep many things in the old covenant as part of the new.

Things like:

Love the lord your God with all your heart
Love your neighbour as yourself.
Do not kill.
do not lust in your heart.
Do not be angry without cause.

Etc etc.

So there is clearly folly in the notion to dismiss every law in the Old covenant just because the Old Covenant is no longer in action.

The new Covenant follows many of the same laws as the Old. Except those laws that only apply in that time in that culture and in that context.

The simple way to know what laws carry through is to ask yourself. What laws still make sense and have purpose in my culture and time. In other words. Which laws are not effected by time and culture.

ham for example as this is the one used in the OP.

science says Ham is not good for us.

There is not law to make us eat it.

God says don't eat it.

So it still fits in our culture and our time. Just like love God is timeless.

The only time we should not adhere to the law of the land is when it goes against the law of Love. This we cannot comprise in any way. But if your government made a law saying everyone had to eat ham. Well do it cause though it is bad for you it does not compromise love.

But if the law said you must steal, that is against the law of love do not comply.

Simple when it comes down to it.

so, you do feel that it is something a victorious man coming back from battle could do, then?

there are folks who attempt to keep as much of the law of Moses as possible, I was thinking of them.

I used the ham example because I see all Christians as law keepers, just a matter of which ones and how they go about it.

I like a simple approach myself

GALATIANS 6:2 Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

one of the things I wanted to find out was if anyone thought this rule should be kept today, and how they thought it would look.

You're right. I don't think this policy would go over too well in our country.

Thanks for noticing my absence lately. Life has gotten extraordinary busy as of late with a lot of increased ministry duties that have happened. But I do try to stop in as much as I can.

I think we have historical examples of this in our own country. There was many a soldier that came back from WWII and Vietnam with wives from those countries. Whether or not they shaved their head etc. who knows. But regardless, there would definitely be a need to mourn their previous life.

At any rate, it would be a hard scripture to apply physically in a perfect way. But the spiritual applications are certainly there.

Yes, keeping the law literally means keeping the law physically- like they did in the Old Testament. Jesus nailed that way (the written code) to the cross. Now we fulfill the same law spiritually instead of physically. You cannot be under Moses and Christ at the same time. (Romans 7:1-4). Anyone who lives under Moses' authority denies Christ's authority- for ALL authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Christ (Matthew. 28:18), and we are to obey Christ only (Matthew 17:3-5). And Christ told the apostles to write down what He commanded them to (New Testament scripture). So when we obey the New Testament we are obeying Christ.
