Some days later Elizabeth becomes pregnant and she keeps herself secluded for five months. In her sixth month, the angel Gabriel goes to Nazareth to Mary who is a virgin promised in marriage to Joseph of David’s house. And he tells her that she will become pregnant and she will call him Jesus. He will be called Son of the Most High and God will give him the throne of David his father and he will rule forever. And he tells her that Elizabeth her relative has also conceived a son in her old age and this the sixth month.

So Mary goes to the house of Zechariah and Elizabeth. When Elizabeth hears the greeting of Mary, the infant in her womb leaps and she is filled with holy spirit and cheers Mary. She stays with them for three months and returns to her own home.

Elizabeth gives birth to her son and on the eighth day he is circumcised. The people want to call him Zechariah like his father but Elizabeth says he will be called John. So they ask Zechariah who writes John on a tablet. And all at once he starts speaking.

Then Zechariah is filled with holy spirit and he prophesies. And John grows up and becomes strong in spirit and he stays in the desert.

We go back to Luke as a decree goes out from Caesar Augustus for all the inhabited earth to be registered. So people have to go to their own city and Joseph goes from Galilee from the city of Nazareth into Judea, to David’s city which is called Bethlehem. He goes with his wife Mary who is soon to give birth. And she gives birth and the child is put in a manger because there is no room for them in the lodging place. There are SHEPHERDS LIVING OUT OF DOORS AND KEEPING WATCH IN THE NIGHT OVER THEIR FLOCKS. God’s angel appears among them so everybody is fearful. And he speaks about the child as Christ the Lord and a savior. Suddenly there is a multitude of the heavenly army praising God. So the shepherds go to Bethlehem and find Mary and Joseph and the infant lying in the manger. After eight days, when it is time to circumcise him, the child is named Jesus. And they bring him up to Jerusalem to present him to God. And they offer a sacrifice a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons. And Simeon is waiting for Jesus, he has been divinely inspired by the holy spirit that he won’t see death before seeing the Christ. And he takes the child in his arms and praises God. And Anna, a prophetess who is a widow and 84 years old also praises God. Then they go back into Galilee to their own city, Nazareth. And Jesus grows and gets stronger. Every year Joseph and Mary go to Jerusalem for the Passover. When Jesus is 12 they go again. After the Passover, they leave Jerusalem. After a day’s journey, they realize that Jesus is not with them. So they return to Jerusalem and they find him after three days. He is in the temple listening and asking questions to teachers. And people are amazed at his understanding and his answers. Answering to Joseph and Mary, he asks them: “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in the house of my Father?” And then he comes back with them.

Luke adds that John tells the people coming to him to share with others clothes and food. He also tells tax collectors to be fair. And he tells those in military service not to harass anybody or accuse anybody falsely. Herod puts him in prison because he condemns him because he lives with his brother’s wife.

Luke is the first to say that Jesus is 30 years old when he begins his work.

Luke proposes a variation in the order of the temptation:
- The devil pushes him to turn the stones in loaves of bread
- He pushes him to worship him
- He pushes him to throw himself down

- Luke doesn’t speak about John’s arrest.
- When he begin to teach in the synagogues, he is held in honor by all. In fact, it is quite interesting and it shows the progress in his message. Here we get an additional event in Nazareth. On the Sabbath day, Jesus enters the synagogue and reads the prophet Isaiah saying that God’s spirit is upon him and he has been anointed to declare the good news to the poor and to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind and to preach God’s acceptable year. So he presents himself and tells what he is going to do. And everybody is amazed and speaks well of him. And they want him to do what he did in Capernaum. But he says that no prophet is accepted in his home territory. And all at once things change, they get angry, they push him out of the city and lead him to the brow of the mountain and they try to throw him down. But he goes away. But Jesus is not here to make friends but he has a mission and it means speak frankly to the people. In Capernaum he teaches in a synagogue on the sabbath and he expels a demon and people are astonished. Nothing is said about the fact that he expels a demon on the sabbath. Usually the Pharisees argue with him about that. He goes to Simon’s home and he cures his mother-in-law who has a high fever. It is said he rebukes the fever. Then he cures many people and expels demons. And once again it is said he rebukes demons when they say he is the Son of God. And he goes away but they look for him. And he says he much preach to other cities and he goes on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.

luke isn't really different from Matthew because he doesn't say a lot about Jesus' miracles either: we are only told when he expels a demon and when he cures Simon's mother-in -law and that he cures people.

Luke doesn’t say anything of the choice of the disciples, he only speaks about how a demon is expelled and how Simon’s mother-in-law is cured, so not many details either and the genealogy.

When we compare the different accounts of the apostles, it is interesting to have different versions written by people with different personalities to find support. Thus when we look at the two accounts of Matthew 8:5-13 and Luke 7:1-10, there is absolutely no difference.

It is the same when Jesus calms down the storm in Matthew 8:23-27 and Luke 8:22-25.

1- Luke highlights Jesus’ miracle connected to a possessed man before speaking about the one connected with the fever of Simon’s mother-in-law.

2- So Luke highlights Jesus’ miracle connected to a possessed man. First Jesus teaches in a synagogue on the Sabbath. Then there is a short dialogue between Jesus and the demon who says that Jesus is the Holy One of God. He asks him if he has come to destroy the demons so they know what is going to happen to them sooner or later. Then Jesus expels him. Luke adds that the demon comes out without hurting the man. And the news of it spreads away.

3-

Luke highlights how Jesus cures Simon’s mother-in-law’s high fever:

- He stands over her

-He rebukes the fever (as if it was a person)

- It leaves her

- Instantly she gets up and begins ministering to them

So everything happens all at once. What a great job! And Luke gives only the essential details!

4- Luke speaks about Jesus curing a leper:

- He is full of leprosy

- He touches him

- He says: “I want to! Be made clean.”

- immediately the leprosy vanishes from him.

So we get the same account just like Matthew.

5- Luke speaks about Jesus curing a paralyzed man:

- Men carry a paralyzed man on a stretcher and they are trying to bring him in and place him before Jesus

- There are too many people so they climb up to the roof and they lower him on the stretcher through the tiling

- When Jesus sees their faith, he says: “Man, your sins are forgiven.”

- Then the scribes say: “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins except God alone?”

- Jesus answers them by saying to the paralyzed man: “I say to you, Get up, pick up your stretcher, and go to your home.”

- The paralyzed man stands up before them and he picks up what he has been lying on and goes to his home, glorifying God

Here we get more details because the scribes speak against Jesus.
