sometimes the purpose of a debate is not to convince your opponent...it is to protect bystanders from being deceived... that would be especially important if you are dealing with cultic things and with salvation issues...

also i actually -have- been convinced to change my mind as a result of a chat discussion...so it can happen :cool:
By all ways necessary...If even endless lines of green text! :p

Matthew 21:28-31 28 But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard. 29 He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went. 30 And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not. 31 Whether of them twain did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you.

Decisions, decisions.

I fall short all the time but I always try to remember: if I can talk someone into something, then someone else can talk them out of it. The Holy Spirit has to convict those that we argue with before any of our words will take root in the heart, so we always need to pray for the person that we are talking to. But, we especially need to pray that are our hearts are in the right place, and that we just aren't trying to win the fight. I think that this is the approach that we would take if we truly 'argued' out of love. Thanks still...great post. :):)

What I learned during my training at the Gracie jiu-jitsu academy, other than jiu-jitsu, was that you have to train to get better. This idea that you can just watch and not train to get better is a fallacy. And you know how you train? You submit and get submitted. That's right. Tens of thousands of times you both get submitted and submit your opponent over years. That's how you progress.

Your words made me realise....:)

That it is about keeping the lamp lit and where it can be seen.
So that those that are in darkness, will see, and find the way! :)
For Jesus said, I am the way, the truth and the life,light.

God bless

Acts 19:8-10
8 And he went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God.
9 But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus.
10 And this continued by the space of two years; so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.

Jm 5:19,20
19 Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him;
20 Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.

Titus 1:9
9 Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.

Acts 18:4,28 (concerning Appolos)
28 For he mightily convinced the Jews, and that publicly, shewing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ.

Acts 17:16,17
16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.
17 Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.

Acts 9:29
29 And he spake boldly in the name of the Lord Jesus, and disputed against the Grecians: but they went about to slay him.

Acts 13:43,44
43 Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.
44 And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God.

2Cor 5:11
11 Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.

Ephesians chapter 4

And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers,
for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ;
until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.
As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming;
but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ,
from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love. (v. 11-16)

Therefore, laying aside falsehood,speak truth each one of you with his neighbor, for we are members of one another.
be angry, and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger,
and do not give the devil an opportunity.
He who steals must steal no longer; but rather he must labor, performing with his own hands what is good, so that he will have something to share with one who has need.
Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.
Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.
Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.
(v. 25-32)

Chapter 5

Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children;
and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.
But immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints;
and there must be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. (v. 1-4)

Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.
Therefore do not be partakers with them;
for you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light
(for the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth),
trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.
Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them;
for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret.
But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light. (v. 6-13)

For this reason it says,
“Awake, sleeper,
And arise from the dead,
And Christ will shine on you.”
Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise,
making the most of your time, because the days are evil.
So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit,
speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord;
always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father;
and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ.
(v.14-21)

Please, Lord...help me take my own advice...
make me bold, yet humble, speaking the truth in love.

The key idea here is - 'state your case and move on'.
In other words don't argue.
It means to state your case as good as you can make it, then move on.
If people have questions, answer them.
On the other hand if people poke fun at your argument, or scorn you personally;
let it go.
Maybe they are in a playful sort of mind.......
Or maybe you are wrong and they can show you with scripture.
But either way, avoid disputes based on soulish vanity.
