Hey everyone got a post from a friend on Facebook here:Please stop reading The Mesdage Bible......It will desensitize you from sin being sin...in 1Cor.6:9-11 in the Message Bible says"Dont you realize that this is not the way to live? Unjust people who dont care about God will not be joining in his kingdom..Those who use and abuse eachother, use and abuse sex, use and abuse the the earth and everything in it, dont qualify as citizens in Gods kingdom"...Where does it say anything in scripture about "abusing the earth in Corinthians?...Now in my Bible this is how 1Corinthians reads "Do you not know that the wicked will not enter the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolators nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offendersnor thieves nor the greedy nor the drunkards nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of The Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God"....1Cor.6:9-11 sorry for being long but I don't understand what she ment can someone help? Thanks

I honestly believe she is overreacting. But others may disagree. The Message is a translation of the Bible in more modern language. I have owned one but found myself unable to read it. However it can be a nice supplement at times, as in certain places, like the psalms, it puts things in a new way, gives you a new way of thinking about the verse.
Don't use it as your only or main Bible translation though.

Thanks and yeah I sorta prayed to about it I prefer the niv but I use it at times. Thanks :)

i don't like 'the message' or any of those 'paraphrase' bibles, because they're not anything close to literal translations of the scriptures, but heavily altered and edited and re-written versions of what the apostles and prophets actually wrote.

to me it just seems like there's an awful lot of room for "adding to" and "taking away from" God's word.
i can't say i've read much from one so i can't speak about specific problems... but the whole idea of it sounds pretty insidious to me. it ought to be presented as a human essay, not as the actual Word.

i think it's better to read from as literal a translation as we can, in order to really understand what the scriptures say instead of what some other author's opinion is. see how much different that passage you quoted is in the different versions? even if it's not obviously contrary to what the original text says, it's not what the original text says, and it's the actual words of scripture i want to read. those aren't found in paraphrases like 'the message'

I think the more modern translations can give you another take on scripture, it can elaborate and get you thinking. The more translations you have the better grip you can have on the true meaning. The link above is correct in that sometimes less is more - and clearer.

I take it with a grain of salt; because for one thing the HOLY SPIRIT is the one who convicts us of sin. And you can call it wrong living, abusing each other, and many other words that the Message bible uses (not just the ones your friend quoted), but we really know what the bible means by sin. Just hang around other Christians, and they will tell you what sin is :rolleyes:, and preachers will not be reading from the Message bible most of the time. At least, the Message bible will lead someone to have a good relationship with Christ - and He takes it from there. It does amplify His love for us.

Some people just can't understand the words unless it is written in a simple "down to earth" form. It is good for the person who has trouble processing the logic from some other bibles and/or needs a more amplified picture of scripture.

But, for really deep down studying, you would not or should not stay with this one for long. And you really need the Hebrew and Greek words to give some basis for understanding the root of the word.

Personally I don't like it because it's a paraphrase. To me it kind of "dumbs down" the Word of God.

P.S. I like the rottie pic :)

For some people who may not be familiar with the material in the first place, it may be helpful. It's ok as long as you understand that you're reading a paraphrase of what the translator thinks the Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek are saying. The translator may or may not be correct depending. I wouldn't try to pass it off as, "...THUS SAITH THE MESSAGE BIBLE VERSION!"

Many modern translations of the Bible can be misleading .... especially for those who do not have extensive backgrounds in the study

The Lord obviously has preserved His Word as He says ..... so seek it and He will show you

This is my thinking on the subject. I have a real problem with some of the modern translations of the Bible. Especially Eugene Peterson's version which is called The Message. I just for the life of me cannot get into reading that particular translation. It's so loosely done and loosely translated. And it's not just The Message. I could name other versions that are very, very loosely translated. In fact they aren't translations at all, what they are is a paraphrasing of the Bible. And when you get to paraphrasing you can be very liberal in what you can write. I stick to the older versions of the Bible such as the King James version where I know I'm reading what I like to read ~ God's Word.

If you are use to the KJV, stick with it

I prefer to read in my own language so ESV or NASB, as far as the message, I personally would never buy my kids it, if I did, it would be thrown away and replaced as they learned to read

I see what you mean. Tell you what, if Jesus ever said that to me, I'd tell Him, flatout, "I resemble that remark... LORD!"

With regards to children, but also anybody, if the King James presents reading comprehension problems, what is better: a paraphrase of the word of God, or no word of God? Is it the simple gospel message of faith in Jesus Christ that saves, or a footlocker full of picayunish doctrine? Anything that doesn't deny Christ and presents the gospel, if only in big letters, isn't bad (do you remember those big letters of child's Christian books you learned from?). I mean, how many people were saved by hearing the gospel message who never owned a Bible, or couldn't read, even? People down the road learn about the NASB or KJV or ASV, but people first need the basic gospel that saves and baptizes them in the Holy Spirit, before they'll even understand a better Bible! Also, doesn't it sometimes get old, looking for a snake under every rock? I don't know anything about this Message Bible, but the Good News Bible and Amplified Bible were a God-send to me as a child, which I learned very much from, at a time when the KJV was scary.

I'd treat the Mess-age as a commentary and not confuse it with a translation; and even when you use it as a commentary have a third translation handy to compare it with.
