As Easter is upon us, our Pastor asked for everyone to sow $1300 per person Easter Sunday. Should he ask for a specific amount or should we feel free to give what our heart gudies us to give?

Give with a willing heart what you have to give.

i'm sure not all would have such an amount to "sow".

You give what God tells you to. The Bible says that Levites (and thus now pastors) are to accept the tithes, not ask for them. He was off-base to ask this way.

ummm no, its not Biblical. You should give what you promised in your heart to give, not what someone demands you give.

2 Corinthians 9
[SUP]7 [/SUP]So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. [SUP]8 [/SUP]And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work. [SUP]9 [/SUP]As it is written:“He has dispersed abroad,
He has given to the poor;
His righteousness endures forever.”[SUP][b][/SUP]

[SUP]10 [/SUP]Now may[SUP][c][/SUP] He who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for food, supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness, [SUP]11 [/SUP]while you are enriched in everything for all liberality, which causes thanksgiving through us to God.

Paul writes to people who promised beforehand to provide and had been saving for the express purpose of hosting missionaries that he was sending. It was for a purpose. Too often ministers will misuse the "sow seed money" but its not about MONEY. its about righteousness. Its about sowing in the SPIRIT with love and prayers. Providing food for those who don't have it and helping the Gospel be spread to the far reaches of the Earth.

Good questiion. Be aware. No you are expected to tithe 10% of your salary to the church. What church is this and why is he asking this. If my Pastor asked our congregation for a set amount as a tithe I would most likely would leave the church. I am not tellling you to leave your church , but it sounds like a bad idea to me.

I've also heard of pastors asking people to bring in their jewelry because the price of gold is so high at this time.

Wow, $1300 is an entire pay check for some people. More than an entire pay check for others. I know that God will provide for us, and it's not that I don't have faith in Him to do so...but I don't know that I could drop that kind of money into an offering plate and then wonder how we were going to feed/diaper our kids.

Either this pastor is demanding a huge leap of faith for some people, or he thinks his congregation is made up of rich people. Makes more sense to me for him to tell the church the amount they need to raise, and let people give what they can to reach that goal
:confused:

I agree, this was not right. Our pastor will always say as he starts the offering to "give what you can, if you can, and if you can't, then touch the plate and your offering is the fact that your here this morning and the time you give and your presence among us." Our church is not big and not rich, mostly seniors (I'm almost 52 and I'm one of younger members). So I know no one who could give like that.

it is scriptural to suggest a specific -percentage- of your income to give as an offering...but it is -not- scriptural to ask for a specific -amount-

He needs his own TV show on TBN. He'd fit right in.
