JOHN 2:5-11

Verse 5
His mother said to the servants, "Whatever He says to you, do it."
Verse 7
Jesus said to them, "Fill the waterpots with water." So they filled them up to the brim.
Verse 8
And He said to them, "Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter." So they took it to him.

After reading verse 5-11 these are the things that I've learned:
-Where did the miracle of water turning into wine happen? Is it in the waterpot?
No, it is in the hands of the obedient servants who drew the water
-OBEDIENCE IS THE KEY
"Even if it doesn't make any sense to obey, just obey". As verse 5 says "Whatever He says to you, do it."
-When you obey, miracle will happen in your hands (OBEDIENCE--->MIRACLE)
-What should be the effect of the miracle?
According to verse 11
1. Manifestation of His glory
2. His disciples believed Him
(OBEDIENCE--->MIRACLE--->MANIFESTATION OF GOD'S GLORY--->PEOPLE AROUND YOU WILL BELIEVE IN JESUS)
-Who are the people used by Jesus?
not the headwaiter
not the bridegroom
But the SERVANTS (OBEDIENT SERVANTS)

Hi Nowel, how did you come to this conclusion? IOW, which part of the passage tells us that Jesus turned the water into wine ~after~ it was drawn out of the waterpots? (or do you mean that He turned the water into wine when the servants were 'filling' the waterpots instead, and if that's the case, where does the passage tell us that instead?)

To me, this passage seems to focus on Jesus and His miracles, as well the purpose that His miracles/signs served in the lives of His disciples and others who had not yet come to faith in Him. For instance:

John 2
11 This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.
23 When He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name, observing His signs which He was doing.
John 3
1 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews;
2 this man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.”

So, is this passage about non-believing wedding servants in Cana who did for Mary, and then for Jesus, what they were being paid to do, or is it really all about Jesus instead, who He is and what He did (to help people come to believe in Him, both then and now)?

I have one or two more questions for you about all of this (if you don't mind), but I think that this is plenty for now.

Thanks!

~Deut
p.s. - it may be for different reasons than you have, but I agree with your admonishment to us that says: "Even if it doesn't make any sense to obey, just obey". It is, in fact, the basic thought behind one of my favorite Christian quotes.

Jesus did the miracle.......it had nothing to do with the SERVANTS following orders to fill the pots with water........and my bible states clearly that FAITH is the key

There were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece. A firkin is about ten gallons, or forty one litres. Each pot had the capacity to hold two or three firkins apiece. One hundred and twenty gallons of wine minimum, or four hundred and eighty litres of wine minimum, was made for guests that had already had quite a bit to drink. If drinking was a sin, Jesus would not have encouraged it in such a way! This miracle also foreshadows the transference to grace (by faith) from the law.

It strikes me that water used for ceremonial cleansing was turned into wine,
for wine now symbolizes the blood of Jesus Christ which cleanses us.

While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks,
he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying,
“Take and eat; this is my body.”

Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying,

“Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured
out for many for the forgiveness of sins."

There are many who think obedience is doing things, without the heart being involved or truth being spoken.

Obedience in the sense Jesus means is knowing who He is, loving Him and loving others and out of this love
our actions flow.

Appearing to be one thing, because you know being kind is what we should be, but ones heart is not kind,
is not obedience but acting and pretending.

There are many who pretend, because who they are is not connected with how they behave. Their behaviour
is a social convention to expectations, and they have lost contact with what they are doing and who they
are talking to because they are not plugged in to their hearts. But Jesus calls us to begin in our hearts
with repentance, brokenness and honesty.
