These are notes I put together from a friend's sermon of about seven years ago. (I think he got it from Colin Smith.).

The 10 Commandments as Promises

It must have been a strange feeling for Moses to return to the place where God had spoken to him out of the burning bush. On his first visit, a flock of sheep had surrounded him. Now, two million people surrounded him. God called him back up Mount Sinai to give him the commandments by which His people are to live. The Law of God was never a ladder for unsaved people to climb to heaven. It was always a pattern of life for God's people who had been saved from judgment by the blood of the Lamb.

A New Dimension of God's Grace

God was not saying, "I'm giving you these commandments, so that by keeping them you may become My people." He was saying, "I am giving you these commandments because you are My people." The message of the Law to us today is not that we must keep the laws in order to be saved, but rather that, because we are saved, we should keep these laws. The Law tells us how people who belong to God ought to live.

This is important, because some people have the idea that the Old Testament is a book of law, and the New Testament is a book of grace, and that the OT has nothing to do with us because we're not under law, we're under grace. That is a complete misunderstanding of the Bible. The whole Bible is a book of grace. God has one plan from beginning to end, and it all fits together. God promised a Redeemer on the very day that sin entered the world. God has always saved His people by grace and through faith. We've seen this in the stories of Adam and Eve, Noah and the Exodus. There is one God, and there is one story.

Get a Glimpse of the Glory of God

In the NT, sin is defined as "fall(ing) short of the glory of God" and as "break(ing) the law" (Rom.3:23; 1 John 3:4). Put these two truths together, and we make an interesting discovery. The Law is an expression of God's glory. Every one of the Ten Commandments (Ex. 20:3-17) reflects some aspect of the character of God. When God declared, "You shall have no other gods before me" (v. 3), it was because: He is the only God. There is no one like Him. He said not to misuse His name because: His Name is above every name. The reason we should honor our father and mother is that: all fatherhood derives from God, and all authority, even within family life, derives from Him. Why should we not commit adultery? Because God is faithful. Why should we not steal? Because God is trustworthy. Why should we not lie? Because God is truth. Why should we not covet? Because God is at peace, and content in Himself.

The Ten Commandments are not an arbitrary set of rules. They are a direct reflection of the character of God. So as you think and meditate about the Law, let it lead you to worship and to the realization that the greatest challenge for God's people is to reflect God's character in the world. When we obey His law, we reflect something of His glory.

The Greatest Battles of Your Heart

A second reason for God giving these Ten Commandments is that they speak to the ten most significant struggles of human experience. Parents know all about this. They always give rules to their children to target areas of struggle. They give instructions like, "Eat your dinner!" or "Do your homework!" or "Clean your room!"… to help kids overcome their struggles. When God gave the Ten Commandments, He spoke directly to the primary struggles that all of us experience. Take a moment to read Exodus 20:3-17. These are the battle of our lives, are they not? The Law is like a light. It shines into our souls, and when we look at what God says to us, we have to admit that He is speaking directly to the primary battles of our own heart. This should drive us to God like nothing else.

The apostle Paul wrote that the Law is a good thing, just like X-rays are a good thing - even if they may bring us bad news. Through the Law of God, I discover that I'm a person who finds it difficult to let God be God, and I am a person who is naturally more interested in myself than in the interests of other people. The Law announces my need of Jesus Christ.

The Law is like a teacher to bring us to Christ (Galatians 3:24). When you learn what the Law has to teach, you will, if you've learned the lesson properly, come to Jesus Christ. And if the Law does not bring you to Jesus, then you have missed the greatest purpose God intended for it. This is the point of Jesus' statement to the Pharisees, "You diligently study the Scriptures...yet you refuse to come to me" (John 5:39-40). The first reason you need Jesus Christ is NOT that you'll have richer, fuller, and more satisfying life. It is that you are a sinner in nature and practice, and the X-ray of God's Law shows it, even if you feel no pain!

Laying Track for the Train

God's ultimate purpose is to restore in us the true refection of His glory. Since God's glory is expressed in His Law. That means that the purpose of the gospel is to bring us to the position where we begin to live according to the Law of God. This transformation is the work of the Holy Spirit, and is spoken of in the Old and New Testament. "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you... I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws." (Ezekiel 36:26-27)

The Law of God is like the rails for a train. The rails give direction, but the train will not go anywhere unless there is power in the engine. It is the special work of the Holy Spirit to give God's people power to move in the direction that is laid out in God's law. The Christian life is not a matter of believing in Jesus and then trying your best to live according to God's Law. The Holy Spirit resides in your life and He will make the difference between a battle in which you are destined for defeat, and a battle in which there will be ultimate victory.

Delighting in the Law

If you have understood the Law of God, it should cause you to fall down in worship, because the Law shows us who God is and what He is like. It will make you cling to Jesus Christ because you will be absolutely clear about why you need Him. It gives you direction for a new life in the power of the Holy Spirit that is no longer a list of impossible demands, but a description of new possibilities!

I believe it IS possible to leave the faith. IMO, you have. You haven't lost salvation, you have lost your faith that Christ alone is the author and finisher of your faith.

There is not merit in our faith. The merit is in the ONE who saves us the instant we believe.

You place the merit if your "working" faith. If your faith stops "working" you believe you won't be saved or will lose your salvation.

The same thing Calvin and Augustine taught. They just say it in a different way...."If one loses their faith, they weren't REALLY saved."

One camp just says you will lose salvation

the other says you were not really saved or you lost the salvation you THOUGHT you had.

This is why you all will not face how dangerous your doctrines are, because look at your own statement here that I underlined.

You make false baseless allegations and claims on another and refuse to stop bearing false witness on others.
Just like I asked VioletReigns to stop 3 times on claiming something on me that I am not, she instead got defensive and told me to stop responding to her if I didn't like her answers.

Instead of answering she kept coming back with placing false claims on me.

I have never told you or any others on here they are headed to hell, condemned, or have no faith in the Lord as you and others have done.

What I have done is said or spoke on when others were walking improperly in the faith, showing I still believe they are in the faith but just have areas the Holy Spirit still needs to work on with them.

Augustine and Calvin did not teach one could loose salvation.
Augustine taught in his eternal security doctrine of the 4th century that falling away and apostasy is impossible.
Calvin in the 1500's made the term OSAS mainstream and said that falling away is impossible.

Matthew 7:21, these people thought they had salvation because they believed Jesus to be their Lord and even did things the bible said believers would do. But when they stood before Jesus He told them He never knew them because they also continued to live and serve sinful lives (iniquity).

Matthew 25, the goats there thought they were saved as well but Jesus sent them to eternal punishment.
When they asked why Jesus told them because they have denied to do for others they denied Him.

Our Lord Jesus even posed a question to professing believers, and He said why do you call Him Lord and do not do the things that He said (Luke 6:46).

Also in the last command given to the Apostles in the great commission of Matthew 28:19-20 He said we are to teach others to observe/obey everything that He commanded.

Do you deny this clear command ???

Ken, at this time, do you believe a person can read Acts 16:31 and be saved the moment they have epignosis knowledge of that scripture?

If you don't, you have fallen from the faith. NOT SALVATION. you have just been mislead and no longer believe in Christ alone for your salvation...........But Christ still has you and He is faithful to save you.

I agree with you KennethC that there are people who defile the Word of God by teaching their Doctrines as being the only Truth.

A good example of this is where the Catholic Church teaches that Mary was without sin.

Romans 3:10
[SUP]10 [/SUP] As it is written: "There is none righteous, no, not one;
Psalm 14:1
[SUP]1 [/SUP] There is none who does good.

Romans 3:9
[SUP]9 [/SUP]For we have previously charged both Jews and Greeks that they are all under sin.

Romans 3:23 (NKJV)
[SUP]23 [/SUP] for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God

God clearly say Mary was born a sinner because ALL have sinned and their are NONE that are Righteous. The only person without sin and Righteous was Jesus Christ.

So yes KennethC there are those people who defile the pure Word of God for their gain.

People accuse others of being angry and on the defensive when in fact, it is the anger and defensiveness in themselves they're perceiving. Out of the heart the mouth speaks.

You do not get salvation through Christ just by reading one scripture alone.

In order for them to have the correct knowledge (epignosis) they have to take in the whole word of God, not just parts of it.

That is a failure in teaching today is telling others they can go by one scripture and one scripture only and make it stand alone.

Once again I will refer you to read Luke 6:46-49 where Jesus explains who truly has a foundation of faith built on Him and who does not.

" And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?

(True faith in the Lord)
Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.

(False/weak faith)
But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great."

You can not understand or know what believing in the Lord entails without going by all that He said, for believing is not simply just He lived in the flesh, died on the cross, and rose on the third day. That is only part of the belief in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Please do not tell me I have fallen from the faith when I stand up for His complete word !!!

Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father* who is in heaven will enter. "Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?' "And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.'

Your flesh can receive nothing from God. Your flesh will never enter heaven. Your flesh is God's enemy. Even if your flesh performs miracles, casts out demons, prophesies, preaches, obeys laws.... your flesh is not entering heaven. Jesus Christ does not have a relationship with your flesh. It is a spiritual relationship, one of the heart. Lawlessness is anything you do to justify yourself in the flesh. It's self-serving. Because it's impossible to please God in the flesh. Your flesh was condemned and crucified on the Cross with Christ.

What is the will of God? To love God with all your heart and love one another. Everything hangs on that. How can you tell you are a child of God? You boast of nothing except Jesus Christ and you treat others the way you want to be treated. That's it. God accomplishes everything through hearts that are surrendered to Him in love like that.

I only follow our Lord Jesus Christ !!!

I am not Catholic so why would I pray to Mary, which is also why I do not follow Augustine's eternal security 4th century doctrine because he was Catholic and was one of the first to be lead in apostasy.

That is how I see them :) In the new heaven and the new earth, we will naturally do all those things that are commanded because there will be no desire or even an inkling to do what is contrary. Those are awesome promises, and something to really look forward to! :)

Yes everything hangs on love because love will not lead one to transgress God's ways.

Apostle Paul clearly expounds on this in Romans 13:9-10, as lawlessness or iniquity as in some versions means a sinful lifestyle.

You also forgot to mention love your neighbor as yourself which is just as important as loving God with all our heart, soul, and mind.

Those are not all there is to the will of God as there are multiple scriptures that say what the will of God is for our lives, but those others do come from love.

When we walk in the Spirit we put an end to the lust of flesh, meaning we no longer give into those sinful ways any more.

A person can not continue to serve sin in the flesh and serve God at the same time, for we can not serve two masters !!!

Why are you still directing your comments at me when you told me not to direct mine at you?

How is that loving me as you love yourself
?

Will you now justify your doing so or will you actually stop directing your comments at me the way you want me to stop directing mine at you?

I'm not angry, I just want to do as you requested and not direct my comments at you. But you keep coming back at me.
